Hi, it's me again, here to tell you about a random thought I had one day about this lil' bastard boy. Why? Why not lol, I know you want a chance to ramble about your lil' blorbo at any chance you get. 👁️👁️
Well, it's more of a crack "AU" idea I have, which can be simplified as, "TFP Smokescreen meeting either his G1 or IDW counterpart (IDK how different those two are, I haven't gotten myself into those yet and I usually see them being 2 differenct categories).
Like- imagine you, meeting a version of yourself who's younger- like probably WAY younger, so exhibits more childlike behaviours and actions than what you would do. Also he's part of the Elite Guard somehow, is the personal Guard of Alpha Trion, and was once offered to become Prime after Optimus?? Like damn kid, what kinda life have you led.
Also hey isn't this technically Hot Rod's role-
Meanwhile here you are, face to face to a version of you from another universe, who's way older--probably as old as Bulkhead or Arcee--so he's like a more mature version of you. Apparrently he's not a Guard, which is weird but whatever. And he's part of some intelligence unit in the army (I'm not sure if this is canon or fanon)--actually nevermind that, he's part of the army. That means he's fought in the war until it's end. That means he hadn't gone to stasis for most of the war.
As the resident Smokescreen expert, I'm curious on how you think about this little idea. Don't gotta think on how they even managed to meet eachother, just- imagine. :)
A U G H
god how do I absolutely love how much of a tragedy TFP Smokescreen's life is. I admit I don't know as much about his IDW or G1 counterparts beside a few clips and looking over the wiki page, but I still Love him <3
I will admit my brain is RAPIDLY bouncing back and forth between the angst and crack options because just. THERE'S SO MUCH TO DO HERE!!!!!
because on one hand, there's the absolute havoc I know these two will wreck if left unsupervised for any allotment of time. There is going to be a lot of racing around, and gambling, and probably several laws being unintentionally and intentionally broken
but on the other hand, the way these two look at the other as some twisted, warped mirror.
G1/IDW Smokescreen looks at this kid. Sees all of his accomplishments, all of his history, but also sees how lonely he is. He's undoubtedly skilled as a warrior, but he lacks the experienced edge every other veteran of the great war has. He sticks out, shiny in a way that almost seems new. He's accomplished so much in so little time and he doesn't even know where to start. Is this what he could've been like? In another world, in another life, could he have kept this innocence and naivety and joy? But at the same time, he can't help but question how? How has he stayed so unstained by everything they've been through? How has this other version of himself come out so- so clean? Was it a moral failing on his own part, or is he missing something here?
and TFP Smokescreen looks up at this other version. Sees his clever words and friendly smile, how everyone seems to love him. How he has the same stride, the same weight as Bulkhead and Arcee and Bumblebee, the weight of a warrior. A real one, one who's fought in the war. He was there for it, and Smokescreen can't help but wonder how many people he's saved, how much of a difference he made to those around him. He's undoubtedly lost people, but he was able to actually do something about it instead of sleeping the war away. He was there to experience terrible, awful, scarring things, but he experienced them yes? He was able to live a life, no matter how difficult, and he was able to bond and grow because of it. Step in step with the people at his side, carving out a place for himself in the world that nobody else could fill
there's so much to be done. These two are so very similar, but they are also so irrevocably different. Cut from the same cloth, at their core they have so much alike, but it's their experiences and lives that have molded them into who they are now

It occurs to me that for Dark Infection, Smokescreen could've used the dark star saber.
boi picks up the huge spiky frag-off sword on the way to getting the phase shifter after they destroyed the omega lock and for the rest of the series Optimus has to train him in actually using something that heavy and mystical.
(bonus:
Ultra Magnus: why does this child have two relics?
Bulkhead: well, one's because he's the only one who can wield it.
Ultra Magnus: and the other?
Bulkhead: he called dibs.)
DSJRBVJSDFBVKJDFBKJVD
oh my god I love that actually that is some fucking certified Smokescreen Gremlin Behavior shit and I am 100% here for it
Ultra Magnus is going to be. SO fucking lost with everything that's going on with this weird fucked up kiddo. Wheeljack too now that I'm thinking about it, but he's got more of It Is What It Is vibe going on so he's less hung up about it
like. Yeah okay, an Elite Guardsman is here and alive, and also he's infused with the blood of the antichrist and he managed to steal a sword made out of the crystalized stuff to wield. Easy enough to understand
and then there's Magnus in the corner on the verge of a conniption because I'm Sorry The FUCK??? What do you MEAN he's regularly being given T W O RELICS????
it does not help that any and every time he asks questions the other Autobots, Optimus included, more or less just shrug and go "well, he's shown he can use them well, so why not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

I was rereading the ghost of dark mount posts.
And.
Tumblr media
EXCUSE ME?? EXCUSE ME SMOKEY WHAt???
LIGHTLY GRABBING ON THEIR INTERNALS?? WHAT THE FRAG?????
that is horrifying. Horrific to think about. Would. Would some bots have to go to the medbay because smokescreen GRABBED THEIR INTERNAL ORGANS??
That
That is genuinely scary.
Smokescreen my guy are you OK???
sometimes you just gotta poke the organs of the guys who are making you upset <3
I like to think it mostly started as an experiment, ie "How close can I get to bots before they REALLY start to freak out"
the answer to that, boringly enough, was barely close at all. Just appearing as a flicker at the end of the hallway was enough to send the vehicons into a tizzy
so THEN it became a game of "how close can I get to bots before they notice me"
the rules were simple. He could stay invisible, but he had to stay in the same plane of reality, aka bots could still hear him and theoretically figure out where he is
he loses if they notice him before he gets close enough. He wins if he manages to touch them
.....and sure sometimes that means a little booper snooper in their internal organs <3
he's bored, give him a break <333 (/lh)

ok so I love the archivist au. Like. Perfect opportunities for crack and angst respectively
So it’s been said that smokescreen has satan in his basement and he’s desensitized
What if when he’s annoyed enough he just starts telling Unicron to shut up
Now imagine. Smokescreen Talking to someone(Bee or ratchet or prowl, anyone), and then suddenly the VOICE OF THE CYBERTRONIAN ANTICHRIST starts screaming at you both and the librarian, silly social man who’s chill, just SCREAMS at unicron to shut up.
Some autobot with high clearance : Ok so we need to talk about these robberies
Smokescreen: Alr! What do you need to talk about?
Unicron: *Insert screams of the damned here as he swears at smokescreen*
Autobot: *Horrified*
Smokescreen: One second, one second. *turns*
SHUT THE FRAG UP UNICRON
Stunned silence from both Unicron and whoever smokescreen was talking to.
AALLSO! Would being nearby the antichrist on basically a daily basis have effects on smokescreen? If so what kinds of effects?
EXACTLY
THIS IS MY EXACT THOUGHT PROCESS FOR HOW IT GOES!!! YOU GET MY VISION!!!!!!
Imagine being this random ass detective or enforcer or whoever is investigating the various attempted robberies on the newly rebuilt Archives. There was a bit of background done on the head Archivist, at least as much as was available. There wasn't too much to be found, so they assume he was probably one of the millions of bots who was scattered to the stars. Rumors say he's a friendly, chatty bot. Few, if any, enemies. Young. Agreeable, if a bit reckless at times.
And when they get to the Archives? All of that holds water and then some. He's perfectly welcoming and transparent with the investigation, doesn't take offense to them pointing out holes in the admittedly very well organized security, and was even thorough in checking their clearance before taking them to the more... sensitive and secretive parts. He makes small talk as they move, outlines everything cleanly and concisely with the practice of someone used to giving official reports, and it seems like nothing of note will happen
but then just as they start wrapping up, one of the relic rooms starts shrieking bloody murder.
The Autobot stops and jolts, a raw primal feral sort of fear being launched straight through their spark. Because that was a noise no living thing could make, was a noise that boomed and demanded respect, that made them so painfully aware of the fact that there were things much larger and much stronger than they were in this world. They wanted to run away to transform to put as much distance between them and that door as physically possible
And Smokescreen, who was supposed to be nothing more than a friendly archivist, showed barely any sign of being affected by it aside from his smile tightening and his doorwings flaring out.
"Excuse me a second," he says
And then he walks toward the door.
The Autobot is too frozen in fear to stop him despite the roaring urge that that is what they should do before this silly, chatty, foolish archivist gets himself killed
He opens the door anyways and the noise impossibly manages to get louder. Only now the shrieking has meaning, words, attached to it. The shrieks are curses and promises of death, of lost ones being ripped away and crushed beneath its heel
It is threats, and every single one is being directed at Smokescreen
who still shows no sign of being affected
who looks positively annoyed by the glowing, swirling jar in the center of the room holding Unicron Himself
who opens his mouth and yells back and threatens the jar into silence
then he walks out
closes the door
apologizes for the interruption
and keeps fragging walking
how would you even respond to that????

you know, Smokescreen's probably legally dead
like. Hear me out: he's been missing and off the grid for MILLIONS of years, and his disappearance would've almost certainly been noticed. He originally disappeared in the middle of a crisis as a guard for an important figure.
Said figure ended up ultimately dying in the chaos, and since Optimus asks Smokescreen when he last saw Alpha Trion, it's implied that his body was never actually found by anybody
it's also entirely possible that Smokescreen wasn't even added to any Decepticon prisoner manifests given how quickly he escaped!!! Best case scenario, they might've snapped a photo or written down a physical description. Worst case, they didn't even notice a prisoner was missing
by all accounts, on any sort of paper or documentation Smokescreen simply isn't supposed to exist anymore

I dont remember if i ever sent this ask about Ghost of Darkmount, so i’m gonna resend it quickly, apologies if its already been seen/read!
I was thinking about ways wearing the phase shifter may have affected Smokey. If the phase shifter was damaged when he was buried maybe its affects are kind of permanent on his body.
Even when he’s not wearing it, or has had it removed surgically, powers of a damaged relic mixing with a normal bot’s frame must be dangerous when its integrated into his system for its own safe-keeping and even Smokescreen’s protection.
And at random times it just kicks in and he’ll randomly drop through floors, or disappear from sight. Try and speak or touch someone but he realises he’s back to being a ghost for the timebeing, Its quite worrying since nothing that’s been tried works in fixing it. And when it suddenly stops, alot of the time gravity gets a bit confusing, or smokey gets stuck in walls, ends up injured or knocking himself out because he’s gone from weighing little to nothing to having a war-built frame.
He cant control it ofcourse, its tiring enough that the phase shifter is using his energy to push him between the realm of the living, and the inbetween, no doubt it randomly hits when he’s picking stuff up, and he cant grab it.
Im definitely gonna be commenting on more if i get the time, so i’ll try to mark anything i send with 🎀 if possible
Ooooooooooooo
maybe this could be a side effect of Smokescreen attempting to wire the Shifter directly into his systems
after all, the ruse would probably be up pretty quick if everyone saw the supposed ghost grab at its arm before disappearing. It would be easy to connect the dots about him just being a living bot using the Phase Shifter
so in an attempt to cut off those assumptions before they started, what if he connected himself To the Phase Shifter
it did it's job, and gave him an easy way to phase in and out of reality without issue
....only for the issues to arise after the removal
a few sticky lines of code he can't read or delete, some fragments of the machine found caught inside his plating, tens of little little things that wouldn't mean much by themself but accumulate into this

holy shit I absolutely love this, no small amount because of how Smokescreen has no idea what the FUCK is going on right now
He originally kept the spy's credentials because.... well why not? It's not like he needed to give the original copy to his superiors when he reported it, and they told him to just dispose of it when he got the chance. They never said he couldn't keep it on him.
and then everything just fucking Explodes, he gets knocked out and wakes up on a Decepticon ship because oh Primus what the fuck they think HE'S a Decepticon no matter how much he tried to originally deny it, so now he's just stuck going with it while also trying to leave the ship while ALSO not getting outed.
he is Stressed and has no fragging idea how this is working because by all accounts it should not.
But here he is. In the middle of a Decepticon warship
god imagine the absolute chaos that would happen if these exploits of his ended up following him to Earth
Cracky AU of an AU. Instead of Smokescreen being a Decepticon spy that intercepted a guard, he intercepts a spy while on guard duty and confiscates the guy's credentials. During the fall of Iacon, he happens to have that on him so he gets spared and promptly bags a bunch of info when he wakes up before he can get found out. Finds out about stuff like Project Predacon a full season before Shockwave shows up on Earth.
DHFJBVDHJFBVFJD oh christ that would be chaotic as shit-
maybe it was some sort of Pre-Iacon invasion spy, potentially a shapeshifter who was looking to replace Smokescreen, but obviously that didn't turn out well
Smokescreen's just hanging out here with the Cons a la "How do you do fellow kids?" and accidentally finding So many secret planned war crimes while desperately trying to not blow his cover

I have a few question about your Smoke and Clay Au. So does Smokey try and fix himself with some scrap parts? And do the Autobots eventually find him chilling with another human in a scrap yard? Or is he going to be chilling there until Rid2015?
He does try to fix himself! ....unfortunately Smokescreen is no medic, and Denny only found out Cybertronians were a thing like. Yesterday, so complicated stuff is a bit out of their wheelhouse
They're able to patch up all the external wounds at least so he's no longer bleeding out :D The wounds definitely heal over in ways they were Probably Not Supposed To, but he's not dying or at risk of rust infection and he can mostly get around so they consider it a success! As the wounds heal, he's able to somewhat safely transform again. I do think it would be really cool if Smokescreen had a crutch or brace made out of scrap to help him get around while he's healing
for stealth reasons, and at Denny's suggestion, Smokescreen ends up changing his colors to his S3 color scheme, and he rarely ever leaves the scrap yard when not transformed. A lot of his time is spent helping Denny move things around and organize, resting and healing, and occasionally searching the web for any traces of the Autobots
he gets a handful of memories back. Not enough, nothing definitive, but it makes him say and do things he doesn't understand.
Some make more sense than. Earth rain is novel and unfamiliar, easy to explain since Cybertron's own acid rains, even if he's not sure why he dislikes it so much.
Others... others are less easy to understand.
He doesn't know why when Denny asked if he had a radio preference while they worked, a string of numbers came to mind that let out a screech of fast pace, blaring music. Why he didn't need Denny to explain how to use an earth data terminal when he didn't even know it was called a "computer." Why he knows driving laws and gets paranoid whenever they pass by a fast food place.
he knows that there's something he's forgetting, other than the base's location. What it is though... he's less certain
As for being found!
Well.... it would be more accurate to say that it's Smokescreen who does a fair share of the finding
Smokescreen bounces back and forth between random news outlets all over the globe and conspiracy websites. He can't really go looking in person without a groundbridge, so second hand sources are the best he's got.
Imagine his surprise when a few weeks into his search, something comes up. A sudden meteor shower that pummeled a town in the middle of nowhere and ruptured some gas lines, requiring an immediate evacuation
Jasper, Nevada
There's no pictures. No interviews. Barely more than a reference in the newspapers of nearby towns to warn against traveling and that the military had locked down the roads for the clean up
but something in the back of Smokescreen's mind snapped to attention at the name. It was familiar, just barely so, but it was something and that was the closest thing to a lead he'd found after so much searching, so it was the best he had
luckily, Denny was more than alright with an impromptu road trip :D

dfjhbgdjhbvjd yeah
like. Smokescreen's in the medbay, most likely tied down on a table somewhere, but then a few doors down in the brig there's a vehicon currently watching over what are essentially a bunch of dogs
not to mention how WILD it's gonna be for the NASA people assigned. Congratulations, conspiracy theorists were right, your rovers have been kidnapped by aliens
Wait, how did Smokescreen survive on Mars for so long without energon? I'm actually not sure when all that happened, but according to what you said he arrived maybe a little earlier that his debut and was rescued when Ultra Magnus arrived on Earth.
WAIT, that also means there was no one to save Optimus when the base was destroyed.
Or because Smokescreen didn't arrive, many of the things in the series didn't happen in the episodes he was supposed to be in?
I'm not judging or anything, my brain just likes to go too deep into things that really grab my attention.
Please keep writing, I love your ideas.
Well :D
Smokescreen managed to survive on a mix of scavenging energon caches that were hidden here millenia ago, repurposing the energon in his pod, and using his new alt mod's solar panels to gather energy
that being said, every bit of power was precious and he needed to be careful with it. Technically that's part of the reason why Smokescreen spent the majority of his time with the rovers in his alt mode, traveling was just more efficient that way and gave his solar panels the best angle to catch rays
he also sleeps a lot, at least for a Cybertronian. He and the rovers set up a system where they sleep through most of the day and night and become more active in the hours during and after sunrise and before and during sunset. During midday, Smokescreen prefers to sunbathe while resting to maximise how much energy he gets, and traveling during the night is too risky since lights would cost precious resources he can't exactly afford to spend, and just wandering around in the pitch darkness is just asking for something bad to happen
Sure Smokescreen could technically take apart the rovers for their batteries and solar panels but... well, he's not that desperate yet. Plus, he knows isolation isn't great, and he'd rather not go insane while waiting for rescue thank you very much
he's uh. Definitely more than a little malnourished (or whatever the cybertronian equivalent is) when he gets to Earth though, and it takes a while for him to break his napping habits
as for the plot :)))
so going off what we know about canon, a very interesting ripple effect starts to occur. Now, of course the relic hunt and more specifically the Omega Key hunt still happen, but some other things definitly have some degree of ripple effect
Optimus would still get the Star Saber, and by extension Alpha Trion's message, and Megatron would still make the Dark Star Saber in response. And despite the shuffling, I still think Megatron would successfully get the first key and then challenge Optimus to a duel
but then comes the interesting question of whether or not Optimus would be able to win it back, since that was all Smokescreen. Starscream will also still get the Red Energon, but he would ALSO still have the Apex Armor, so I think it's pretty clean cut that he would steal at least one key from the Autobots. Knockout getting his key will be just the same
so honestly, by the time Smokescreen comes into play the Autobots are going to be down THREE keys, a majority of the relics, and their base because the Decepticons would've found it eventually anyways. At the very least they wouldn't have to split up because Megatron wouldn't have the means to hold the United States government hostage, but they would absolutely be on the back foot
and somewhere during that piping shit bag of a time for them, this bubbly kid they've been watching mess around on Mars for months appears as the last Omega Key hint
(also, I'll admit I've been bouncing around the idea of Smokescreen getting briefly snatched by Cons a la Inside Job. Perhaps he gets brought aboard the ship with his rovers and breaks out, but then gets picked up by Magnus on his way to Earth?)

Ooooooooooo I LOVE that, ESPECIALLY with the magnet analogy
The Omega Key is connected to the Lock, something of pure Cybermatter that is intended to heal. It is meant to mend and fix, and though it may not be able to create the spark, it can create the frame
honestly I could see Post S2 the Allspark's more ambient energy being almost "absorbed" into the Omega Key, like a conductor. With no anchor, no collective, the ambient energy will be lost with nowhere to go. So why wouldn't they be drawn to the best vessel they can, despite it's dubious origins
this is all essentially a very long and dramatic way to say that the S3 finale more than a thematically appropriate and terrifying time to reveal the Key, no :)
I want to know more about the universe jump, anything really just dumped it out!
*cracks knuckles* alright lets see what we got in this little brain cavity of mine
it takes a VERY long time for Smokescreen to slip into a more "civilian" mind set. Sure he lets his guard down pretty quick, but the majority of the time it's quick to be right back up again.
Ratchet is... honestly kinda haunted by Smokescreen. It reminds him of the times immediately after the war, when the dust settled and nothing was left, and they were stuck asking "now what?" He's the biggest advocate for Smokescreen relaxing and staying out of trouble, and admittedly has a bit of a soft spot for him
and then the S1 finale rolls around and all that progress gets not so mildly shattered by the Decepticons deciding they were going to cause problems actually
Smokescreen easily towers over the majority of the team, it's pretty funny. I'm using unofficial height charts for this, but this is what I've got:
Smokescreen is (very very roughly) standing at about 7 meters. I got this from how he's taller than TFP Bee, who's about 6 meters, but shorter than TFP Ratchet, who's about 7.5
With the TFA Charts I scrounged up, he's taller than almost the entity of Team Prime, with the slight exception of Bulkhead. When counting the kibble on his back, Bulkhead would be taller, but when comparing the top of their heads, Smokescreen would be the taller one
Another thing of note is that he's shorter than all of the Decepticons present by the series, but it's not by too much, especially when compared to the other Autobots. He'll have to look up at them, but they won't be able to just pick him up one-handed
similarly to Bumblebee and Prowl, he latches on to Earth culture pretty quickly but for uh. Decidedly different reasons. Sure he thinks it's cool and interesting, but he's also very much trying to cope with the time displacement going on
gets into a lot of fun discussions about Cybertronian literature with Optimus, which also doubles as a form of comfort. That even with how "scrambled" his brain is, there are some things that seem to be "correct."
not sure what exactly will happen, but given the Omega Key's Everything, I think it wouldn't be too out of the ordinary to say it would react strangely to the Allspark Key
I've been bouncing around ideas that the original Praxus was still destroyed during the war, which of course Ratchet, Optimus and maybe even Prowl would be aware of. Of course, eventually it was rebuilt, but given the time frame which they believe Smokescreen to be from.... yeah it's just adding more layers to the entire perceived tragedy surrounding him
probably in some Post TFA Space Bridge Chaos, he does get thrown back to his home universe because admittedly the Omega Key IS pretty damn important to the plot, but the TFA bots end up chasing after him :3
there is a LOT of chaos going on when they realize that Smokey wasn't actually Shadow Played

For the ghost of darkmount AU I have been thinking about the predacons. What if predacons breathing fire is just for some? What if some other predacons had electricity, poison, can actually turn invisible or clone themselves? So when the battle actually takes place it is actual chaos
christ almighty that sounds absolutely batshit and I'm completely on board
Poor Smokescreen trying to keep the Predacons from causing too much damage vs Predaking actively encouraging it Just To See What Happens
he only manages to get them to stop experimenting on each other by making the argument that they don't have a medic who can treat them if things go wrong. He constantly lives in fear that one day when he does back to the cave they hide them in, it's just going to be a burnt, frozen, exploded crater

just got the mental image of one of miko with a fever falling asleep with her head pressed against bulkheads hand and bulkhead cant move now and i am dying of the cuteness
All I can see with this concept is Bulkhead having to endure what we humans do when a cat plops itself down upon our laps.
Poor Miko coming back from school with a light fever and just, pulling herself over to Bulkhead to lay her head against his leg. I can see him being quite confused with the whole situation, since Miko is normally bouncing off the walls with energy. One careful human child collection later, and he's stuck standing in the middle of base with this small child half asleep, too sick to want to move and shivering.
"Jackie, she won't move."
"Is she dead?"
"No. But she's shaking and curled up like an isopod. What do I do?"
"I don't know Bulk. Don't move?"
"But-"
"Look, I don't know slag about the squishies. Just don't drop her."
