wait do people read first person stories and think they're the ones in the story???

Saw people talking about not liking first person, which is fair, but their reasoning was like "I would not do that" and I don't understand that mindset.

First person stories are still about a character. A character making their own decisions. First person isn't about you???? At least I thought it wasn't. What am I missing? I've always seen first person as just a more in-depth look into a character's mind and stricter POV. Not as a reader stand-in.

There is a point at which cognizance of your own cognition becomes destructive of the ability to live as anything other than an idea. You live as if you are a scientific system, perfectly explained by mental laws that you have the capacity to understand. This is not true. There is also a point at which a lack of said cognizance makes you as temporally blind and irrational as a fruit fly, not knowing why you want what you want or even what you want in the first place. You must be conscious of your cognizance, you must understand where you go too far and where you fall short in terms of trying to explain yourself. Too much, and you become unable to really live, too little and your life is at the whims of you know not what.
