Seeing Frogs
While flipping channels this Monday in the morning I ran across a television show about frogs. They are truly odd animals and it was interesting to learn a bit about the scientific perspective on Amphibians. Two hours later I went to the post office and had an impulse to stock up on stamps. The woman behind the counter asked if “I preferred flags or Frogs?” I, of course laughed as I chose Frog stamps, having never in my life been offered that choice. In the evening I went to my friend Don’s to celebrate his birthday with his family. After we ate a delicious cake his 15 year old daughter made he brought in the mail and presented his daughter with a gift that he ordered on amazon of a stuffed frog. She had mentioned wanting a frog (with classic teenage angst she said “she preferred a real one”) to him a week before and he ordered it then from Amazon. 16 years ago this same friend and I were in my office and he pulled one of my animal totem cards for an answer to a question he had. The totem animal came up a Frog. After discussing its meaning we decided to get pizza and had to stop while we were driving to get our pizza because there was a large bullfrog in the middle of the road. The frog looked at us for about a minute then hopped away. It was pretty surreal so I looked at my friend to make sure he was actually seeing the same thing.
The Druids saw animals as magical messengers and if we tune into this aspect of nature our lives become richer with the many signs placed on our path.
The meaning of seeing frogs
Frog: Sensitivity, Medicine, Hidden Beauty and Power.
Drawn Upright: “Frog unites the elements of water and earth, bringing joy, delight and healing in its singing and hopping, and leading you to the sacred spring from which you may be refreshed and renewed. A cold-blooded creature living half on the land and half in the water, the frog possesses an extremely sensitive skin, considered magical by shamans. A companion of the rain spirits, the frog can help you develop your sensitivity to others, to healing and to sound through your skin and your whole body and aura.
Nothing is what it appears to be, and life is more fun than you at first supposed! There is a hidden beauty and a hidden power in all of nature, and as you open yourself to this you will feel close to the Goddess and close to both the earth and to water. Look for the beauty and magic BEHIND appearances.
Drawn reversed (the shadow side). This card suggests that you are learning how to embrace difficult circumstances. The frog that you must marry may well turn out to be a prince. The circumstances you have chosen to accept-whilst apparently unappealing or difficult-may well bring you rich rewards in the end. Remember the frog brings medicine, and medicine brings healing.” From the Druid Animal Oracle. Carr-Gomm
If you saw this today either or both messages may be a helpful signal for things happening in your life!

January/February 2019 Snake Oil
Pigging Out
“I saw a video online of a baby in a high chair eating bacon for the very first time. He takes his first bite and looks up at his parents with the excitement of a new sensation and grateful tears in his eyes. He can’t believe how delicious this is. It is very cute and funny. While I don’t eat a lot of meat anymore I have never been able to fully let go and go full on vegetarian. I have no plans to at this time either. Like the baby in the video I love bacon and while I don’t eat it often I find it to be seriously yummy. In early February of 2019 we begin the year of the Pig in Chinese astrology. If you were born in the year of the Pig than this year will reinforce both the best and challenging aspects of your personality. If you were not born in the year of the Pig than attributes of this totem animal will still be a notable influence in the world and personally to consider in the coming year ahead.
In Chinese astrology animal totems for the specific year you were born have good characteristics and of course some potential negative ones. The positive attributes of people born in the year of the pig are accommodating personalities, honest, trusting, educated, sincere, enjoyment of life, will work hard for what they want, selfless, and diligent...”

You better change that attitude!
“I had a funny random memory a few months ago about a Saturday morning seventies cartoon that I watched when I was a kid. The Saturday morning lineup was a very big thing back in those days. The show was called “The Groovy Ghoolies.” Dracula, Werewolf, Frankenstein, etc... were all in a band and had adventures and performed musical numbers. I recalled both watching the show and making fun of it. It was a stupid title and equally ridiculous premise. There was a lot to make fun of in this monstrosity and I made my friends laugh by pointing this out. I looked up when the cartoon originally ran. It was actually from 1971-1972. It’s “hard to believe” but it didn’t have a very long run before it was cancelled. That would have made me six or seven years old and I already had a wise ass sarcastic way of thinking and tongue to match it at such a really young age...” Click on the link to read this months column.

Quote
Jim Ventura’s August 2018 Snake Oil Snake Oil/Models of Wisdom “... Oddly, it was when I studied using Mah Jongg cards as an oracle for divination at age 30 I saw the simplicity of what could be seen as heroic behavior for everyone to potentially model. There are eight Guardians or symbols represented in the cards. Four of them are connected with the seasons themselves and what they have to teach us. The other four are people in the most simple and even common professions: The Fisherman: The fisherman's philosophy connected to the season of spring and was often noted as simple common sense. The ability to cast a line with bait and patiently wait for the bite of a fish was considered to be wise. Enjoying the process itself of catching fish showed the benefits of being present. A similar idea is marked by Druid teachings about the wisdom of the totem of Crane, an animal adept at patiently waiting for the sight of a fish before taking its prey. The idea of group management of time and use of diplomacy with others also came into play with the fisherman. Working successfully with others in the process could lead to a “good catch” to be shared by all. We see this idea portrayed with groups of people working together on a fishing boat. There are connotations with this symbol representing the possibility of a “good marriage” in Mah Jongg oracle readings...” Click on this link to read this months column: https://playingwithuranus.blogspot.com/2018/07/august-2018-snake-oilmodels-of-wisdom.html
