With so many people in our family, every season is birthday season, This one is no exception. It's hard to believe I have five teenagers already, but it's true--our daughter Cadence turned thirteen today! There was plenty to celebrate, because Cadie also received her acceptance to a prestigious program for young Christian musicians. It's a wonderful opportunity for her to meet likeminded friends (and perhaps a young man she can get to know!) in a safe environment, one that focuses on hymns and classical music rather than the crazy stuff that inspires teens to be so rebellious nowadays. Through the whole application process, she consistently demonstrated the value of patience, persistence and, most importantly, trust in God no matter what.

Cadence occasionally makes mistakes when it comes to modesty, and in those cases I find myself having to offer gentle guidance on when a skirt is fitting a bit too tightly, or when shirts need undershirts beneath them. Nevertheless, her heart is in the right place. Colin and I are so proud of her hard work and dedication, and so grateful to have another wonderful role model for our younger children!

We celebrated Caroline's birthday today! What they say about time flying could not be more true. It feels like just yesterday that I held her in my arms for the first time, and yet it's been a year. She has the most beautiful head of ginger curls, and she keeps us all on our toes by crawling around constantly, whether we like it or not! Luckily she doesn't have to worry about being modest quite yet, or else she'd be getting her little skirts tangled up just about everywhere.

I've been praying and praying for a positive pregnancy test to give this sweet girl a baby sister or brother, but no luck thus far. I'm just a few weeks shy of 40, so it's in God's hands now more than ever.

[So can you tell us what "courtship" means in your family?]

Sadie: Ummm, sure. Courting is like dating but more intentional, so you're not just doing it to have fun, you're doing it to find the one God made for you. Different families at our church have different standards. For us, we're not allowed to start a courtship until we're 16, and we need permission from Mother and Dad first. The boys also need permission from the parents of the girl they're interested in. And once we're in a courtship, we have to behave appropriately.

[What counts as appropriate and inappropriate behavior?]

Sadie: You can hug to say "hi" and "goodbye" if you want. And you can hold hands, or save that until engagement. That's something you discuss with your parents and his parents. Some families don't even allow touching until you're engaged, but we're not that strict. But it's important to be chaperoned at all times, at least when you're not engaged, and to save your first kiss until marriage. And, um, the rest of it. Obviously.

[Are you finding it difficult to stick to those rules?]

Sadie: No, I'm not having a hard time. Colby comes from a similar family so we're all super committed to being responsible. It's really, um, cool to be courting though. Colby's really sweet. He visits a lot and always brings flowers or something like that.

We've started a new program under the ISCS umbrella: Camp FIGHT! It stands for Faithfully Imparting Guidance to His Trainees, and in short, it's all about raising up strong young men for God. In addition to year-round local chapters (think Boy Scouts, but with Christ at the center of everything!), we've also established a four-week military-style summer camp for our cadets, ages 13 to 18. Young men aged 18 to 25 will be welcome to return as counselors and chaperones, and older men will serve as mentors and senior staff.

Some of our colleagues on the ISCS board had concerns about taking on another project right now--Colin and I are so busy with filming, after all--but I pushed it forward. For a long while Colin and I have been concerned about our second son, Samuel. He's always been a little softer than a young man should; he prefers staying inside to playing sports with his brothers, and he just doesn't have that normal, natural strength of character a young man should. We assumed he'd grow out of it, but he's 14 now, participating in our weekly FIGHT meetings in the church basement, and he still hasn't fully given himself over to God.

That's why we'll be sending him (and the other boys) to the very first Camp FIGHT session this upcoming summer. Our guiding philosophy is very simple--the Lord wants us all to live out His perfect design for our lives, but some people need a little more of a push than others. I'm confident that Camp FIGHT will be just the right nudge for Samuel to appreciate his God-given masculinity!
