Wait, that's it? That's where you decided to end this game????

I'm so puzzeled by their narrative choices.

Anyway, I finished the goblin series and I think, that I'd rate them as such:

1 - Of Orcs and Men is my favorite storywize (it has characters that have arcs! And fashion!) . Also found family (I'll die on this hill). Again, problem with abrupt ending (and so many gay jokes..), but other than that pretty straightforward road trip with unlikely allies to friends to "you know what you are". And horrendous fighting. But still very unique and very atmospheric setting.

2 - Styx: Master of Shadows. Honestly? I liked it! Very pretty game, very atmospheric. I love the character study of Styx in it. I was absolutely lost all the way from very beginning to the very end. I have questions to the way they tell the first half of the story (and the rest too tbh), but maybe it's a design choice, so you'd feel as confused as the main character. Would be improved significantly if the npcs were more than plot devices. But still, good game.

3 - Styx: Shards of Darkness. I would put it lower if it was an option. If you come into it not as a fan of the series (not where I expected to find myself in the beginning of 2024 but here I am) it was a solid stealth game. I feel like they lost pretty much most of the unique atmosphere, but maybe it's because they decided to sacrifice the whole character of the protagonist to some very low quality 4th wall breaking jokes. And I do like that Styx as a character can't shut up to save his life and very bad at humor, but leave it at least canon-adjacent. You can't put a player into one of the two boss fights in the whole game and put a lotr one-liner as the line of dialogue! Have some respect for yourself? For your story?? Also your players, what the hell were these death cutscenes? Still the story feels like a very rough draft. But! We finally have other characters! Two of them! Unfortunately their motivation is not very clear especially in the story that is all over the place, that doesn't know how properly end. Speaking of it, I am very confused by this storytelling move when they clearly set up the villain, but at the last second we fight some henchmen and the story ends. It was in several games of different studios and I can't say that it's a setup for a sequel because the main characters just don't acknowledge this in any way? It's odd. What can I say.

Anyway, Happy New Year, I was planning on staying late playing the game but I guess I'll go to bed early!

Absolutely agree! 

I think I do prefer, however, Styx choosing to embrace his old self in OOAM... just by ever so tiny a bit! Because I hope that honouring the past (while also continuing to be his own self) will give a tad more peace to the dead soul of the original Styx. And that makes me happy. xD 

I keep thinking about original Styx and clone Styx and their views of themselves. Original Styx, the one that remembers being an Orc, can only see himself as an abomination while clone Styx has only known himself as he is. He loves who he is, fights to stay alive.

This makes Styx’s choice of path in Of Orcs and Men very interesting. If he chooses to embrace the old Styx, he becomes a little more like his original self. But if he rejects his old self yet again and chooses the Assassin path, it’s like his vision of and love for who he is solidifies even more.

Idk if I have a point lol, I guess I just think it’s a good callback/tie-in between the two games. It’s a cohesive thread that I appreciate.

Hey, so, I'm apart of the fandom for a game called Knack, and I was just thinking... What if Knack and Styx had a crossover?

In Knack's world (and in Styx's, too, if I'm correct), goblins are your enemy. And... Styx is a goblin...

I feel like Styx would (somehow) end up in Knack's world and come across the goblins there. Styx ends up having to fight them (he insulted whoever the leader was because I headcannon that Gundahar died in Knack 2) and is almost killed. Knack shows up and beats the absolute shit out of the goblins. He notices Styx and goes after him, too. Styx frantically explains that he's not with those 'rakash' and Knack reluctantly believes him.

And then the story kinda plays out like Of Orcs and Men, but the relationship between Knack and Styx stays kinda stingy for most of the story.

(Styx would also have to figure out how Knack's world works since their worlds are so different.)

Woah! What an idea! Thanks for sharing with me! :-O I have frankly never heard of the game and had to google for some images... Is it fun to play? I feel like I'd have to get used to Knack's visuals but hey, that goes faster than one thinks... xD

Crossovers are fun! I haven't really yet thought of many for Styx but I've done so for other fandoms I'm in. Goblins are a little hard to insert into my other passions... xD LOL He's too sneaky and too elusive.

I wonder what other crossover ideas there are?

Drew Styx in "The Arcana" style. Went in with Julian's face shape and kind of worked my way around to fit Styx more. :)

"You're a goblin?"

"what did you expect Styx, a dwarf with floppy ears?"

Ryvir, a scientist and clone of styx given his own personality. It all starts off with a kind and curious soul, a hand reached out to him when he was nothing but a simple, mindless rakash.

Ryvir was taken in and named by a scientist who went by the name Dr. Revenant. This scientist had no heir to speak of and had grown very very ill, so to fill the void in his last days he took in a rakash, which he later named Ryvir.

Revenant would read stories to Ryvir, the rakash cuddled up and curled against the scientists side as he followed along with the stories. It was all children's stories, stories of damsels in distress, great heros, and dragons who needed slaying. It was when Ryvir had called Revenant "father" that the scientist had truley seen how unique this goblin was.

So no longer did he consider this goblin another "rakash," but rather a child he had to grow. He would let Ryvir take turns reading books, teach him how to read and take care of himself when he had to go on a business trip. (or rather a trip to a healer to cure himself of his plague.)

One day there came another scientist much within the rank of our own Revenant. This was the first time within the year that he had Ryvir, that he had guests over.

Ryvir, wanting to make his father proud had offered a pint of beer to the guest, only to have a scoff and backhand in return. Revenant yelled at the scientist to leave his house and never return, and explained to Ryvir that to others... He was nothing but a rat.

But Ryvir had no problem with this. He had his father... Or so he thought.

Time came for the scientists passing. He puts a headpiece with wires sticking out of it and a piece of quartz where it sits on the forehead. Revenant had his own machine headpiece, but amber sat at the forehead.

"Ryvir... I cannot stay long enough to watch you grow... But I can't leave you here with nothing from me other than a few stories. So, to give you the best chance at life, I give you my mind. Remember me, son."

He strapped the goblin to a table, watching the rakash sit comfortably, trusting this scientist with his life. The scientist laid flat down on a table next to the goblin... And pulled a string connected to a lever.

The screams of the poor rakash could be heard as the power of quartz surged through his mind, memories he never experienced flowed through his brain...

Ryvir awoke, looking at his passed father. His mind was reborn, and his eyes glowed as blue as the quartz used on him. He slowly unhooked the headpiece and caressed his father's cheek.

"this death will not be in vain. I I'll continue your work."
