bwaaaaaa. thinking more about actual oc lore/worldbuilding but Just A Little Bit

like I don't have a ton of super concrete story ideas or anything, it's just playing dolls in my mind with mine and my partner's fursonies. it's just fun to think about the how and why of the little ocverse...

okay okay so. this is gonna be a little disjointed and ramble-y but I gotta start somewhere

first of all, this is a fairly modern but magic-influenced world. tech exists and is common, and has a fair bit of overlap with magic. it's not the main focal point of anything though, just a setting detail. the reason there's overlap is because magic is just Energy, and therefore comes in a lot of different forms.

most people have at least a liiiiittle bit of magic affinity, but some people have a much stronger sense for it and can to tap into it more easily. just about everyone can at least do a "party trick" or two, like floating a couple of inches off the ground or changing eye color or other goofy little magics. magical ability is a full spectrum though, and some people can basically become gods-in-training. it's fun!

like I mentioned earlier though, magic is just energy. and those who use magic a lot tend to store it, and the body stores it just the same as mundane energy. fat is a great way to store energy! so most powerful magic users tend to be on the heavier side and try to keep their reserves up. (and on that note, people who were less magically inclined sometimes notice a jump in their abilities when they get heavier, since they have more energy to work with.)

eating food and being exposed to strong sources of magic can have roughly the same effects as each other, although everyone still needs to physically eat at least a little bit - you can't just subsist on magic energy alone. but hanging around a bunch of strong magic users can definitely rub off on you, with that background magic radiation accumulating bit by bit. magic energy can be transferred in all sorts of ways. enchanted items (including food), exposure to natural sources (depending on personal affiliations/affinities), background radiation from other people, direct transfers from other people... direct transfer can be purposeful or accidental. physical and emotional contact can cause it. just hanging out with someone and getting along super well can lead to some transfer of energy. sex can deeeeefinitely lead to energy transfer. (nothing like your gf busting a magic nut inside you and waking up 20 pounds heavier y'know)

with the basics of magic down, I can talk a little about how it affects some of my characters. woo!

Zephyr (and @bigandsoft 's Terra) have a very high affinity for magic, and basically fall into the training-to-be-gods range. exciting stuff! they met at what basically equates to a college for said training, and learned the basics of how to master their specific types of magic. Zephyr is sky-based, while Terra is more earth-based.

Zeph's job is more or less to monitor the weather and keep things in check there. rain, wind, thunderstorms, all sorts of things like that. they're also influenced by/get some energy from celestial things like the sun, moon, and stars, but to a lesser extent since it's not their main domain. (so for example, being out under the full moon would give Zeph a bit of extra magic energy, but not nearly as much as being in a thunderstorm would. Terra would get energy boosts from being in places like the mountains or dense forests.)

the fun part of this weather monitoring job is that usually it's pretty easy, the local climate is pretty nice. but when the rainy season hits..... hough. Zephyr's figure tends to fluctuate accordingly.

Aleyxi also met Zephyr at the magic college, and drifted between the roles of "annoying neighbor down the hall who won't stop fucking at full volume at 3am" and close friend. she was often both. I'm still reworking her exact role and affiliations, but her domain is pleasure. her magic is linked to people enjoying themselves, often in excess. (that's where @bigandsoft 's Finn comes in. Finn is mostly mundane, but agreed to fully give in to pleasure on a regular basis to help with Aleyxi's job/magic in exchange for a cooler place to live and, well. getting to overindulge in pleasure on a regular basis. it's a good system for both of them.)

Zenith is an oc I've mentioned in passing in tags maybe twice on here, but they're linked with @bigandsoft 's Zodiac. Both of them are on the same level as Zeph and Terra, but their domains are specifically celestial bodies like the sun and moon (Zenith) and shadows/tricks of the light (Zodiac). we haven't planned out a ton for them yet, tbh.

on the other side of the setting we have Nyx! She's more of a mid-tier magic user, with her focus being a form of lycanthropy. it's not exactly the traditional type, but that's the easiest point of reference. Nyx's magic is heavily affiliated with the moon, and to a lesser degree other celestial bodies. She doesn't only transform into her werepanther form during full moons - she can transform whenever she has enough energy for it, really. full moons do mean she has more magic readily available to her though, so it's not a bad time to do it.

transforming definitely burns up a fair amount of magic though, so when she changes back she's usually a fair bit smaller than before. her weight in normal form influences her werepanther form's appearance. if she's pretty chunky starting out, she's got a lot of magic to work with and can choose to make her wereform taller, stronger, etc. or she can choose to keep storing some of that energy, and keep her form shorter but stouter. she could technically stay in werepanther form indefinitely as long as she had enough access to energy, either through food or magic sources.

as far as how this lycanthropy spreads, it's basically influencing other people's personal magic energies. it's passed through strong emotional and physical bonds with another person. both the emotional and physical aspect have to be there for the magic to take hold. often it's "hereditary," since children tend to have strong bonds to their parents. it's considered a big deal in the lycanthropy community when someone's partner "catches" it, since it means their emotional bond is fully reciprocated <3 and this is how @bigandsoft 's Juniper ends up with it, despite being otherwise pretty mundane. Nyx is pretty startled at first when she realizes Juniper caught it, since she didn't realize Juni already felt the same way as her!

(lycanthropy will eventually fade away if someone refuses to use their power for long enough. there's a strong urge to transform and use the magic during full moons, but it can be resisted and the urge gets weaker the longer they go without using it.)

Callisto would technically fall into the same lycanthropy category, although their magic is linked a little more with Jupiter's movement through Earth's skies and is influenced a little less by our moon. It's a weird case and I haven't figured out all of the exact details there just yet.
