my hopes and wishes for avatar studios

in honor of the recent announcement of the avatarverse returning to nickelodeon in due time, here's what i think can we can hope to see as it releases!

1. animated avatar comics

whether this is a pro or con to you is debatable (considering i don't know how i would be able to handle watching the search in real time), but seeing these continuations of the stories actually portrayed as one fluid motion could bring a whole new perspective to what we already know to be the atla-verse. it would definitely open these plot points up to fans that haven't been able to read them, making the universe feel more whole and complete.

2. a short series

and by this, i don't mean a mini-series; i mean a series of shorts. little, five minute clips thrown into a commercial break or before an episode (such as what can be seen in gravity falls, almost an equivalent to an ova that would be seen in an anime). these could include almost anything, from scenes we couldn't see in the show to short character backstories to bonus scenes in between atla and lok. i think it would be a fun way to portray missing information, or even just fun information that would contribute to the lore.

3. young adult a:tla

this one i know is a fan favorite. we see small flashbacks of how the gaang progressed in lok, but there's still so much information we don't have. i, for one, would love to see how their journies progressed: zuko's reforms as the firelord, aang and katara's wedding, and (hopefully) do suki some justice. there's not much i can say to predict this one as all of the major plot points are there, but all the minor details that we'd see are completely unforeseen.

4. korrasami depth

we all know the story of the lack or korrasami representation, but i'm hoping with avatar studios, this is something that could be reversed. i would love to see more of the relationship portrayed from asami's perspective. we know that she knew she was in love with korra before she left, but we don't actually get to see any of that three-year period. as times have progressed and even more conservative channels (such as disney) have even started to hop on the bandwagon, i hope that this time around, nickelodeon will be more willing to display a same-sex relationship on their network and that we can see some more or their romance in a healthy light.

5. earthbending avatar

this is the big one. i know there's been some circulation about seeing the avatar following korra, myself being one of the fans desperately hoping for it. honestly, i'm more excited to see a "modern-bending" type of storyline. if korra dies around 90, that would mean the earthbending avatar could be born anywhere from around 1995-2005. i think seeing an avatar we could relate to on such a personal level could definitely help to ring more fans into the universe. how the storyline would be represented is still in the air. would we get a full-fledged series? comics? official art? it's hard to tell, but i know the fans would eat literally any of it up.

what are some hopes that some of you guys have? i'd love to hear them! i hope you guys are just as excited for the avatar studios announcement as i am!

there are 14 minutes of no nuance november left, you know what that means:

the fact that bolin can lavabend and has one earth and one fire parent is nothing but a coincidence.

don't get me wrong, i love my boy, and the theory is cute, but i don't know why y'all like to single out lavabending with this one.

first of all, toph can lavabend. enough said.

second of all, even if it was never stated that she could, lava is nothing but hot rocks. it has been shown multiple times that benders can control the temperature of their element (i.e., blue fire, ice, self-warming). and none of y'all questioned that. it's like saying that you have to have one earth and one water parents to icebend. why doesn't that make sense? ice is just cold water.

i get what y'all are saying, but please, everyday i see this spread more i die a little on the inside.

ooh see i also wonder the same reasoning from the opposite perspective: since it (hypothetically) didn't affect azulon, he would have no reason to keep it illegal, however, he would also have no reason to re-legalize it.

i also second your point, sozin probably only did it to be an asshole. the roku/sozin points are interesting, but all in all, i really hope it's not the case seeing as how those are zuko and azula's two grandparents. overall, not a fan. i honestly think bryke just needed a reason for it to previously be illegal in the fire nation, so they were like "idk, sozin already sucks, just stick it to him."

i personally don't believe ozai would've been the one to re-legalize it because i simply don't want to. he sucks and i refuse to like him (unless he did it because ursa pushed him to, in which case it's okay, but he's on thin fucking ice).

which leaves us to zuko. i mean, sure, you can't completely rule out izumi, and there is the idea that it's still illegal. on the other hand, though, i can't imagine aang being as close as he is to zuko, and being raised on the ideals that he was, without advocating for sexual tolerance. so, it was either azulon or zuko. (which, i mean, is pretty much what you said, i just over-analyze everything and would love to document it somewhere)

also, i definitely headcanon both sokka and suki to be bi, so i don't think (if it was still illegal) that zuko would sit there and keep it criminalized with some of his closest friends being lgbt.

if—and only if—it was still illegal by the time izumi was the fire lord (lady?), i feel like the moment korra was out, the law would be reversed under the sole reason that you don't outlaw the avatar and you definitely don't tell the avatar how to live their life. so, basically, just using context clues, i think it's pretty much impossible to say it's still illegal by the time iroh ii becomes the fire lord.

the thing is, i'm SURE there's a simple solution to this. no way in hell was it made to be this complicated, but as fans, it's just what we do.

korra (who is close with zuko anyways), reacted to this as it was new information, by saying "that guy was the worst!"

as somebody who is the literal avatar, if she were to engage herself in a same-sex relationship, don't you think that she would at least be aware of the standing laws?

and, if aang was so amazingly supportive as kya explains the same speech, doesn't it make sense that while pushing for reform in the fire nation, that he would push that reality for zuko?
