This was why I loved Hayden's performance, he made him vulnerable and needy. Anakin as a character was ahead of his time in many ways and the dude bros couldn't cope with Anakin not being a wise cracking bro Chad type.
i think my biggest issue with tcw anakin is just the fact that most of the time he not only felt like a generic action hero, but a male power fantasy. many times in the show he displays aggressive/dominant behavior towards the people around him,it's more obvious with padmé, but it can be seen with everyone else too. in the movies he got desperate instead of just plain aggressive when in distress and often cried, something i'm not sure he ever does in tcw.
in the movies he was pathetic, and it was one of the most intresting choices lucas made with the character. in tcw he just constantly acts aggresive and dominant, even though in the pt the only time he displayed that kind of behavior was mustafar, where he was at his MOST unhinged. tcw just acts as if anakin had 100 mini mustafars leading up to the big one, and there's no indication of that in the movies at all. his violent, controlling behavior was a shock to both obi wan and padmé, why would it be if he had just behaved as a light version of that for three years?

this quote is what sums it up best for me. it seems to me as if the writers tought that for anakin to show his darkness (which is very present in the movies too) he had to be just plain angry, instead of "melodramatic" or "whiny",traits that people wrongfully associate with, you guessed it,women.
tcw anakin is just much more predominantly masculine in the most stereotypical sense of the word, and people tought that for him to be that he just had to be much angrier and controlling, instead of someone genuinely tragic and pathetic in the original sense of the word (derived from the greek πάθος) .

They missed the point of Anakin and just tried to cater to the dude bros in the 00s back lash against Hayden and the prequels. We know Hayden nailed it and I enjoy watching it all these years later and seeing the subtleties he brought to the performance despite the clunky dialogue, which let's face it is Star Wars (it wouldn't be half as fun if they spoke normally and how does one speak normally to a droid and 2 foot ancient green alien who talks backwards).
I'm very torn about Clone Wars because on one hand I love characters like Ahsoka and Rex, seeing more of the Jedi and Anakin and Obi-Wan's friendship, but the radical change in Anakin's character and the way some arcs unfolded bothers me.

i’ll say it til the cows come home but as undeniably strange as the star wars prequels are, george lucas’ direction with anakin was downright fucking inspired. people were waiting for whatever badass backstory lucas was sure to give them, awaiting a naturally intimidating actor with rogueish charm to be cast, waiting for this masterpiece of badass villainy or whatever, and george lucas is like no, no, i’ve got you. and then he finds the one man on the planet who looked babier than baby mark hamill and says, “his main personality trait will be being weird and awkward, secondary personality trait loving his wife, tertiary personality trait being incredibly good at murder, and all of these traits will do battle on the silver screen for three movies until they all win in possibly the worst way.” that fucking rules. george lucas could’ve done anything with darth vader and he willingly, enthusiastically chose mentally unstable college student who is somehow married but his only friend is his kind-of dad. that fucking rules, top down, that’s fucking exquisite. if you don’t think that premise is inherently entertaining you’ve got no taste

why does he need numerous 20 minute breaks to smoke?
I heard a break every 20 mins. I guess he likes smoking! He's known to smoke a lot.

can you talk more on hayden’s con life? what factoids do you know? and what other tidbits about him?
Not much other than he likes his smoke breaks! He's super popular so expensive for cons, but they make money off him so are happy to pay. Never heard anything problematic about him.

what tea do you have on hayden and his problematic parasite ex?
you seem to know a great deal about his convention info and stuff ? /gen inquiries
Oh the crazy is back. He isn't gonna choose some Internet troll I can tell you that. I know people who work in conventions, I also know weirdos who stalk actor's loved ones need to get a life. Some actors have a crazy list for staff to pick out of their lines, you should be on Hayden's.

We were so shocked he seemed modest, since when, Ewan? We've all seen it, there was a time when you couldn't stop waving your lightsaber in front of the camera!

Agree with this, such good analysis. He had such little choice in life. Most of us get to choose things, the wrong subjects at school, the wrong sports to try out, the wrong people to hang out with, wrong drinks to mix etc. We exercise choice and learn from mistakes. Anakin had so little choice throughout his childhood and teen years, the first taste of freedom he experiences horrific trauma (violent death of his mother, and yes, I'm looking at you Andor, SA is implied here in my opinion too, it's just a kid friendly movie). He then reacts completely on impulse when he kills the Tuscans. He then marries Padme! He has no experience of making low level bad choices to learn from so his bad choices were epic!
There is an absolutely fascinating moment in the Obi-Wan and Padme and Anakin confrontation on Mustafar that I kinda want to spin like three full-length fics off of.
Anakin’s Force-choking Padme. Obi-Wan orders him: “Let her go! Let her go, Anakin!” and Anakin - Anakin who has already pledged fealty to Darth Sidious, who has already embraced the Dark Side, who has disclaimed loyalty to Obi-Wan - obeys the command.
He genuinely doesn’t seem to drop Padme because he’s processed yet what he’s doing; it really does look like he’s instinctively obeying Obi-Wan’s orders even when he’s fully off his rocker, out of his mind from everything from accumulated trauma to elemental-evil-exposure, and has officially denounced any hierarchical relationship between them.
And there is SO much to be unpacked there.
I’m guessing that what’s going on, for the most part, is a decade of conditioning as Obi-Wan’s Padawan (and subsequent years as his partner-but-subordinate) to follow his orders reflexively. Combined with Anakin’s overall instinct to obedience, trained into him by everyone from Watto to the Council to Palpatine. And that’s so powerful it overrides everything else, when even Anakin’s protectiveness of Padme couldn’t break through it. Underneath it all, he's still more Padawan than Sith Lord, at an instinctual level.
(It’s not the only time obedience to Obi-Wan takes precedence over the protectiveness of Padme that is otherwise his driving trait, by the way; Obi-Wan orders him to leave her alone and injured in Attack of the Clones and follow Obi-Wan instead of rescuing her and, though he argues a bit, he obeys.)
And what does it say, too, that that’s what Obi-Wan defaulted to? He considers Anakin a brother, at this point, sees them as equals in many ways. But in an urgent situation, he doesn’t plead or reason - he barks an order expecting to be obeyed. Because, in the end, he is a Master, and Anakin never was. And all the weight Anakin gives that fact? The near-meltdown he has about it in the Council chamber? He’s not getting that from nowhere.
In an AU, if Obi-Wan had, instead of fighting him, said “Anakin, I’m going to take over the Republic now and you’re going to be my attack dog. Sit. Stay. Now bite.” Would that have worked? Based on both this scene and how frequently Anakin offers to betray Palpatine for other people so they can rule the Empire in Palpatine’s stead with Anakin as their iron fist, it seems likely!
