“After his recent heroics defending Tenel Ka against the traitors trying to usurp her throne, he had become something of a sex symbol to half the women in the Hapes Consortium… Tenel Ka included.”
Legacy of the Force: Inferno, Troy Denning
The contrast from the beginning of this book, Tenel Ka seeing Jacen Solo as sex symbol, to her opening fire on him at the end is so effective at making me emotional.
I know a lot of people don't like the Legacy of the Force books but I personally love them.

The Skywalker Twins and the Expanded Universe This graphic pulls together quotes Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have made over the years regarding their characters' futures in the EU. Although neither of the two actors were readers of the EU material, they knew of the goings-on of their characters through friends and family informing them of the events of the novels. Carrie was said to have picked up a copy of Courtship of Princess Leia in the '90s due to liking the cover art. In 1997, she was interviewed for Star Wars Galaxy #12, where she provided some remarks shown here; later, in 2000, she also commented a bit on the subject of Leia's EU life at the Star Wars Weekends event at Disney Hollywood Studios. When her fictional twins of Jacen and Jaina were brought up, Carrie asked if they behaved themselves, and when an audience member said they did not, Carrie quipped, "They don't behave, seriously? That sounds like they'd be my kids." Carrie would sometimes remark that her preferred lightsaber color would be purple, if she was to have one; the closest this came to being realized is Leia's reddish-pinkish (nearly purple) lightsaber, as presented on the Japanese and American covers of Star by Star, in the New Jedi Order. Mark has remarked over the course of several years on his EU self, repeatedly commenting that he approved of Luke's relationship to Mara. In 2004, Mark even took to the stage with Shannon McRandle, Mara's actress for the trading cards; Shannon says they got along well, and Mark enjoyed meeting her, with him saying later to Insider, "The model who plays her is just adorable." The quotes compiled here for Mark's section are from Insider #73, from 2004, a Tweet of his from 2016, and a Hyperspace chat Mark conducted with fans in 2004. Three pieces of art were used to create this piece: the immaculate Star Wars #20 by Hugh Fleming for the starfields, a piece illustrated of the Solo family for West End Games' The Last Command Sourcebook, and a drawing of the Skywalker family by FalconFan on DeviantArt.

i was reading through JJK again for delightful bits of anakin and tahiri's early characterizations, and came to the conclusion that this meme describes the difference between them and YJK crew perfectly:
Tumblr media
the jedi praxeum masters with anakin and tahiri vs with the twins, lowie and tenel ka
baby anahiri are under constant supervision:
peckham goes with them to yavin 8,
master tionne to tatooine,
master ikrit to dagobah,
luke to vjun, the most dangerous of their adventures.
the only time they sneak off to explore the jungle on their own, they are intercepted and given a very stern lecture about the rules for jedi padawans, which include not running into danger blindly.
meanwhile, jaina & jacen on their self-assigned quest to find a perfect present for their mother manage to:
fly a ship all the way from the outer rim (yavin 4) to the core (alderaan system) with no adults on board,
go exploring the asteroid belt, where every object can crush the rock dragon & its crew into space dust,
get into a shooting match with a professional bounty hunter,
all while missing days worth of classes.
and all teachers not named luke skywalker just pinch the bridges of their noses and say "this might as well happen" tiredly. the question of assigning them a permanent adult or (at the very least) confiscating the ship is never brought up.
no lectures from anyone not named luke skywalker either.
the solo kids reminiscing about the academy during the break probably goes like this:
anakin: space pirates seemed dangerous for a moment, but uncle luke sent master solusar with us. tahiri and i didn't even have time to get scared, it's so unfair!
jaina: oh, remember that one time we took the rock dragon and went to ryloth without alerting adults to get lowie out of the terrorist cell he was hanging out with, got captured and forced to do slave labor in the mines, tried to escape, had to track through the desert without gear and water –
jacen: and then had to testify before the senate about all that banta poodoo. almost got poisoned by bioweapons for that.
anakin: why didn't they confiscate the ship?! if we'd been gallivating through star systems with minors piloting...
jacen: tenel ka has diplomatic immunity.
jaina: no, we're not taking you with us next time, baby brothers are not allowed. and stop giving me cute ewok eyes at once!
jacen:...
jaina: don't fall for his manipulations, jacen, you can't betray me like that.
(in short, baby anakin and tahiri are well-behaved angels and teachers' pets. opposite should be said about the twin terrors.)

Tenel Ka: You use humor to deflect serious trauma.
Jacen: Thank you!
Tenel Ka: I never said it was a good thing.
Jacen: What I'm hearing is, you think I'm funny.

"Wait until the first time you fall in love. Love can burn you even worse, and it never makes sense."
- Tenel Ka Djo, Fate of the Jedi: Conviction (pg. 436)
This quote from Tenel Ka in Conviction tugs on my heartstrings every time, knowing that she's talking about Jacen and everything that happened between the two of them.

Also the fact that Jacen was doing Tika's hair, meaning it was something that he probably practiced in his spare time.
I'm rereading Legacy of the Force: Fury and imagining Jacen (Caedus at the time) going shopping for little girl clothes while on break from the Galactic Alliance has me in hysterics.

Star Wars Legends x Lord Hurons's Strange Trails
Lord Huron's music is so captivating, and there is something about the Strange Trails album that reminds me so strongly of Star Wars Legends. Each song reminds me of moments or relationships within the legends continuity, I wanted to share my interpretations.
Love like ghosts - Jacen feels as though Tenel Ka is slipping away from him as he delves further into the dark side while trying to protect his daughter. Jacen refuses to fully let go of Tenel Ka and begs for her to let him know where he is going wrong.
Until the night turns - Jacen has come to terms with what has or will happen to the galaxy and he has accepted it knowing that things will happen and things end. He only asks to have the one he loves most with him.
Dead man’s hand - Luke and Ben visit the lake of apparitions and are spoken to by Anakin, Mara, and Jacen, all communicating that parts of their lives have led them to moments of suffering in their afterlife.
Hurricane (Johnnie’s theme) - Anakin shows Tahiri that he is spontaneous and spends his time in the moment, and that is something that he would like to continue with Tahiri as they begin their relationship.
La belle fleur sauvage - Jagged thinks about how he’s been in love with Jaina ever since he met her, despite the fact that she had feelings for other people and went on to date other guys before him, but he continued to fall for her and knew that he would end up with her.
Fool for love - Jagged thinks about Jaina and how much he loves her, despite being in a relationship with Zekk. Jagged thinks about how he isn’t afraid to fight for her hand, but he doesn’t want to force a relationship between himself and Jaina.
The world ender - After Jaina killed Jacen, Jacen reflected on what was taken from him. His feelings of anger towards his sister for taking him away from the love of his life and his daughter. He begins to wish that he could plot his revenge and return from the dead to go back to his family.
Meet me in the woods - After Jacen’s 5 year journey exploring the force, he returns to his life. He visits Tenel Ka and reveals how much he missed her and tells her the things that he learnt about the force, even the things that are powers of the dark side.
The yawning grave - Allana grows up without her father in her life since Jaina killed him, but he always watched over her. As she gets to her teenage years, she begins to walk dangerously close to the dark side of the force and Jacen comes to her with a warning.
Frozen pines - Tenel Ka refuses to believe that Jacen is dead, and tries to call out for him, despite everyone telling her that the Yuuzhan Vong killed him. She continued to believe that he was still alive, despite not knowing where he was.
Cursed - After Tenel Ka withdraws support of the Hapan military from the Galactic Alliance, Jacen now sees her as a threat standing between him and Allana. He sees Tenel Ka as a curse and believes that she has laid a curse on him.
Way out there - Jacen explains that the galaxy will not be celebrating his death after everything that he did. He chose a path of the dark side that leads him to death and he suggests that his cousin, Ben, follow him.
Louisa - Jacen reflects on how Tenel Ka and Allana gave him meaning in his life, despite the meaning leading him toward the darkside. He hates being apart from them, thinking that he may as well be dead without them.
The night we met - After Jacen is killed, Leia reflects on her son and what he became, wishing to herself that she could go back in time and stop her son from becoming the Sith Lord Caedus and unleashing terror on the galaxy.

This song is literally Chapter Twenty Three of The Joiner King when Jacen goes to Hapes to convince Tenel Ka that she should give him her military and they “spend the night” together, resulting in Allana. It sums up the chapter so perfectly.

encomium
(n.) warm, glowing praise or Han Solo helps his granddaughter, Allana, as she grapples with thoughts about her father
Read Now:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/62570314
The Coruscant lights lit up the night sky before her. Through her tear filled eyes, the lights almost looked like stars, the only stars you’d see on Coruscant. The planet wide city polluted the air with so much light you’d almost think it were day if you didn’t know what time it was. Allana admired the light, it was comforting to her, knowing that without it the sky would be dark, unlike her 7 mooned home planet of Hapes.
She was sitting cross legged on the floor of the Solo’s apartment, gazing out the window, resting her head against it. The transparisteel cooling her warm, puffy, tear stained cheeks. She watched as ships of all colours and shapes flew past the window, enjoying the light show before her. She hoped that if she focused enough on the details that it would take her mind off her troubles. She mustn’t’ve been trying hard enough because it wasn’t working.
“It’s a bit late for you isn't it, sweetheart?” A sleepy yet deep voice said as a figure emerged from the dark hallway. Allana turned her head, quickly trying to fix herself up before anyone saw her, a Hapan tradition of course. It was a habit Allana found hard to break, especially being away from the superficial society.
“Grandpa,” Allana sighed. “What are you doing up?”
Han wandered over to the window, leaning against the arm of the couch. The city lights illuminated his granddaughter's face. He could see so clearly how the tears had fallen down her cheeks and onto her sleepwear, a simple grey top that was now wet with salty tears and loose beige bottoms that were far too long for her, but she insisted on wearing. Her red hair tucked neatly behind her ears and spilling down her back. The now 16 year old looked just like her mother with her wavy hair, though her eyes were identical to her father.
“I could ask you the same question.” Han’s voice was full of concern. Allana averted her gaze and turned to look back out the window. “Allana, what’s going on?”
“Why are you up?” Her voice was meek. She was evading his question, just like her aunt. She got that from Jaina , Han thought to himself.
“I could tell that there was something wrong,” Han said softly, “that you were upset.”
“You can’t use the force.” Allana said to the window.
“I don’t need the force to tell me when my granddaughter is upset.” Han murmured, hoping that Allana would turn around, but was disappointed when she refused once again. “Allana, talk to me.”
Allana turned to face Han, though still refusing to make eye contact.
“You’re stubborn, just like your father.” Han observed. At the mention of her father, Allana’s face twisted, clearly fighting back tears. Han suddenly understood. “This is about Jacen.”
Her lip trembled and Han recognised how hard she was trying to keep herself together. It broke his heart. She had experienced so much pain in her short life, much like everyone else in their family, almost like the Solo-Skywalkers were cursed.
Allana rarely mentioned Jacen. It was a habit she fell into shortly after his death. Compartmentalising. Leia had been growing increasingly concerned about the manner that she had developed, worrying it would take her down the path that had claimed their son. Any attempt in getting Allana to open up about her father ended up in her cursing and walking away, in true teenage fashion.
For Allana to be talking about Jacen, she must really be struggling.
“Sweetheart,” Han began, gently, “your father loved you.”
Allana’s sad expression warped into a scowl. Her mind drifted to her last moments with her father. Anger bubbled up inside of her. Fresh tears ran down her cheeks, though instead of crying from sadness, these tears were full of rage. Allana fought to keep herself composed. Han didn’t need the force to sense just how angry his young granddaughter was. It hit him like a fresh wound, reminding him that he failed to protect her once again.
Allana thought back to when she woke up from being on the Anakin Solo , how she was so scared and confused, to Jacen revealing that he was her father. She remembered the love that Jacen poured into the force for her. She thought of the hate he felt for her grandparents and her aunt Jaina.
“He would have moved the entire galaxy for you, sweetheart.” Han tried hard to comfort her. “I know you find it so hard to believe, but he loved you more than anything. He just became so twisted.” Allana remained silent, and so Han stayed with her in the silence, offering unconditional support for when she was ready.
“I know that I’m the reason that he turned.” Allana said at last. Concern flooded Han over the weight his granddaughter was carrying.
“How do you-”
“I hear things,” Allana interrupted.
“Allana, that’s not true. Jacen’s descent into darkness was very complicated.” Han tried to console her.
“It’s my fault that he turned into a monster.” Her voice shook with every word. It was Han that began to grow angry, however not at Allana, at Jacen. He had caused his daughter so much sadness. He couldn’t believe that his once optimistic and benevolent son had become the ruthless and tormented Darth Caedus. It ate him up inside. He hung his head in shame. He failed Jacen. He wouldn’t allow himself to fail Allana too, she was his second chance.
“Do you hate him?” Allana whispered. Han sighed and thought about the question. It was surprisingly difficult to answer, especially in such a way that would make Allana understand. He wished he knew the answer to the question. He felt many things toward his son, some difficult to understand himself.
“You do, don't you?” Allana’s voice was barely audible. Han couldn’t do anything but sigh once again. He heard her sniffle as she tried to hide her face. “Mom says I look just like him.”
“You do.” Han murmured. Allana shot her head in Han’s direction, finally looking him in the eyes. They were full of pain. It tore him up inside. He wanted nothing more than to be able to take all her pain away.
“How can you even look at me?” Her words catching in her throat. Han was confused, he couldn’t understand why she would ask him that. Allana could sense Han’s confusion in the force, which only made her angrier.
“How can you look at me and not see everything that you lost and somebody that you hate?” Allana cried. Han was fighting back his own tears. He knew where Allana got her avoidance issues from. He didn’t like talking about this either. The memories, too raw and painful. He never allowed himself to fully submerge himself in his grief for Jacen. He had to be strong for the rest of his family. Leia was torn apart over the loss of the last son. Jaina became gaunt after the duel that ended her brother's life.
“I don’t hate him sweetheart, I hate what he became.” His words desperately trying to comfort her.
“I must just serve as a reminder of the man you hate.” Allana was fighting herself, hurt spread across her face. Han was determined to fix the situation, he couldn’t fail Allana like he failed her dad. Han stood beside Allana, slowly lowering himself to the ground, doing the best to ignore the ache in his joints as he lowered himself to the ground. Han wrapped an arm around Allana’s shoulder, regardless of her attempts to fight him off. Despite Han’s old age, he was stronger than she was. He pulled her in tightly for a hug, holding her close.
“You remind me so much of the man your father once was. Brave, compassionate, eager.” Han whispered, gently stroking her hair. “When I look at you, I see my beautiful granddaughter, someone who is courageous and strong. You are more than your father, Allana. You are going to do such incredible things.”
Han could feel Allana’s tears fall on his arm, but he didn’t care. He was just happy that she was finally opening up to him.
“I can’t hate him,” he mumbled, “even after everything he did, I can never hate him. He gave me you.”
Allana erupted into sobs. Her cries echoing in the quiet apartment. Han rubbed her arm. Sometimes he hated that he couldn’t use the force like his wife to help calm down their granddaughter when she was upset, he felt like he wasn’t enough for her. Instead he held her, holding her tight, doing his best to calm her down.
Allana turned her head to look at him once again, this time her eyes were calm.
“Sometimes I’m angry at Dad,” her voice small, “but other times I want nothing more for him to be with me.”
“He’s always with you.” Han said as he tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “And he’s so proud of you.”

⠀⠀The gardens outside of the Queen Mother's chambers were empty of suitors, much to said ruler's delight, and she emerged onto the balcony overlooking them to find Jacen staring out towards the faraway Hapan oceans. ⠀⠀Lights from the fountains below danced over the palace architecture, hitting the man's brow as Tenel Ka leaned on his shoulder and heard a quiet question leave his lips. ⠀⠀Even after ruling 63 planets for over a decade, dealing with trade routes and Hapan council issues and what to do with assassins her grandmother had sent... what Jacen Solo had asked her was one of the most loaded questions she had ever heard anyone ask.

@tragcdysewn: 🎵 + 48 jacen and allana
"i know how you feel about me, allana." jacen could only predict that his daughter wouldn't want to see him still but he needed to check on her. this city was too unpredictable, after the maze, he was just nervous she would forget him. "but we don't always get the time we want here. we have today. no more, no less, just today. and i wouldn't be a good man, much less a good father if i didn't come to you."
