I want Odysseus to lose clothing over the course of the narrative because it symbolizes his descent. The stripping of his crown and cloak and armor and all barriers and protection until there is nothing left but a raw, hardened man. No longer a king, but a force of wrath and pain, not allowed the human right to protective clothing. This is perhaps who he was, who everyone is, when you take enough away. If you take his crown, tear his cloak, shred his skin and grind his bones, do you have who you started with?
