Chapter One & The Spirit of 17.76

When I arrived, I crossed the tunnel under the highway network above me, and I could feel the difference in my blood. Phoenix’s temperature doesn’t drop. The heat swindles people out of their minds, and their clothes. I've never worn shorter pants than the bright orange "bill murray" pair I managed to trade a goat for in pheonix.

The weekend was one of leg hair, and masculine anime watching.

Arizona is laid out like a track run. The first leg, quick enough to get your blood pumping, stretches from north Tucson to inner city phoenix. Any second leg would be twice as long, to either Flag or whatever is left. I can zone out for the exact amount of time it takes the road to reach phoenix. I bring enough water and music, ritual tools that allow me to fade into the flatland like a ranch animal.

The love connection between the two cities burns at both ends. Eventually, when they declare a light rail along the freeway, the candle will have completely disintegrated. 

Until then, us lesser folk have to put up with an hour and a half drive into stark traffic. 

The political death-camps aren’t as apparent in Phoenix. Everyone owns a gun, and a hardened stash of weed and uppers. This combination, while toxic to the rest of the desert, is completely necessary for day to day life. Bars and book stores on opposite ends of the street, like a refuge for Hemingway or any wandering modernist authors.

I showed up on Tachi’s doorstep late in the day, after being held up at the emissions office for a bad test correction. I rushed to repair a taillight, but the beast bit me and refused to work properly. I'll need to replace it with a neon filament later. I needed my plates to drive safely and securely, so I got them in the early morning, psyched out on uppers and coffee for the night ahead of me. 

We shook hands, went straight to his apartment, and began to display our own separate collections of materials and gear.  We smoked, and discussed our plans. “We need certain things,” Tachi said. “And first we are going out to get them. When we come down off the mushrooms, we can go out and drink on the dot. Right at midnight.” 

We'd probably be harassed by bar tenders, or people that don't look remotely like twenty one.

"Where will we go?" I stole the pipe from him, because he was gesturing with it at each end of a sentence. 

"I don’t know man. There’s a lot of places. We don’t want to go by work though. They shouldn’t see me stoned deaf." 

I still felt stiff. The last time I was in phoenix was for comic con, when actual aliens roam the parking lot stables and bar scene. I've never seen a place behave more like Mos Eisley.

Our plan was entirely volatile to the desert winds. We were free to deviate in whatever way we wanted to accommodate the birthday festivities. We went outside again, and saw the literal case. Through the haze of the pheonix downtown, shards of rock crashed like waves in the distance. The sky ended at a brown, flush line of dirt. Imhotep's face snarled at us in the dusk, his sandstorm set to shroud the entire city for several hours.

The haboob was upon us, and our phones chirped an alarm at the exact same time.

At 2:37pm this evening, my phone lost it's long battle with genital battery decomposition. It blinked out for the last time, surrounded by family, in the Apple store. I first deleted all incriminating nudes, and then my internet history. " I feel like I'm going under surgery again," I said. "The anxiety is killing me. Lets go in early. Maybe the doctor can see us if we act sick enough." Inside the submarine station of blue shirts and white wires, there were more sales people than customers. I looked around the walls and thought this was it. This is why the republicans are winning. Each interaction device was some apple application forced to do a particular task. Slave labor of these multi-processor devices, made to work as information sheets. In my mind, I saw a bleached human skull crushed by a terminator. Chuck got it wrong in his book. Everything is a sacrifice, of a sacrifice, of a sacrifice. You have to give up something, to get something else, to get something else, to get into a position to get the thing you really want. They made me sign several contracts, boxed my phone in a coffin, and gave me a brand new rental phone with a strong insurance policy. I only have to make sure it's filled up before I return it though. Maybe this time I won't delete the browsing history, because I'm a rebel.

There's nothing critical about this. It's your convictions, vs. mine. You want guns for a veiled, protection reason. To defend yourself against criminals. Paranoia isn't fearing weapons, it's fearing invisible enemies that you need a gun to defend yourself against. 

I could state the gun violence rates in England, who restricts firearms, or a number of other countries. But that doesn't have any affect. The numbers are there, anyone can see them, but you won't believe them. The urge you have overcomes rational thought. You want a gun for you. Everyone else be damned.

Several people had firearms on the site of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting. None of them were drawn in time to stop the assailant’s rampage. Firearms cause violence. They never, ever solve it.
