hestia knew this year was going to be difficult , with the way she ended the previous year. it was a miracle she had passed her O.W.L.s , after all she had been through , it was likely the professors had something to with it. they’d never admit that fact , though. still , she hadn’t had much time to consider how the timelines might effect her classes , being from the current timeline. ❛ i mean , i’m sure they will. they’re all going through what we’re going through. i just hope whatever timeline ol’ sluggy is from , he’s far more interesting than how i remember him. ❜ hestia wasn’t going to get her hopes on that one.
“do you really think that’s possible? him actually being interesting?” although cassia was in slug club and did well enough in potions, there wasn’t any denying the professor had a habit of making her feel drowsier than usual. “you know, in my timeline i had my first prophecy in his class. at least, i think it was potions --- admittedly i’m still...” waving the hand that wasn’t holding her cup around airily, she nonchalantly shrugged. “fuzzy about the whole incident. don’t you just love an involuntary recitation that you can’t even remember?” maybe it was the same in other timelines, but a small part of her hoped that things were different. “that was, uh... rhetorical, by the way.” she shook her head before taking another drink, finally emptying the cup. “you want another drink?”

When Cassia’s voice cut through the noise, Dorcas felt beyond relieved – she almost even let herself feel relaxed. It took no time for Dorcas to intertwine her hand into Cassia’s ( she was not letting her go, not for a very long time ), smiling back at her. “I know I’ve said this about a thousand times today but it’s really GOOD to see you,” she smiled in her friend’s direction, her head then looking around for any sign of water. “Let’s hope the water in this timeline – isn’t that so odd to say, timeline, – isn’t contaminated with something. I don’t know, I’ve been having the strangest and weirdest thoughts since this happened, Cassia.” Dorcas walked in the direction of the punch, “how are you doing? How’s the party been for you?”
“tell me about it! not even my inner eye could’ve predicted this.” though with a momentary frown, cassia shook her head. “if the water here is contaminated, i wouldn’t be surprised. some of these people are so... suffocating, with the whole war thing.” she paused then, quickly maneuvering herself and dorcas away from another student who would’ve bumped into them as they walked. “i totally get timeline two had a war and it was awful, but i don’t know how i feel about all of it,” cassia admitted. “i haven’t had a vision of anyone dying here yet, so i would say the party is going well enough.” it was a small jest, though if her grip on dorcas’s hand tightened as she continued, she didn’t notice. “have i... mentioned that florian isn’t here? as in, never existed at all? i don’t know how it happened or the cruel logic behind it, but it sucks.” glancing towards her, cassia mustered up a faint smile. “if i didn’t have you here, i think i might have literally lost my mind.” she hadn’t found alecto in the crowd yet, but her heart ached and hoped the other was the one she knew, too. there was only so much of this timeline mixing-and-matching she could take.

he thought about a world with no war, and thus none of the things that had went along with it and found himself returning the smile. “i wish, that sounds,” he trails off, a million words on the tip of his tongue before deciding that none of them quite fit. “well, i guess it would be different in a nice way.” and that was putting it mildly for sure, but atlas wasn’t quite ready to get into the trauma of his timeline - nor the envy that bubbled under the surface. at the mention of astronomy, his grin widened slightly as he nodded enthusiastically; just grateful that some things stayed the same. “yeah, the stars are beautiful - and so mysterious. why - did we?”
with a small hum, cassia beamed --- it was obvious she was just as enthusiastic, but his change in demeanor only heightened it. “we were in astronomy club! club meetings were some of my favorite times, to be honest.” it really was an escape and part of her wished her other selves enjoyed it just as much. “i am so happy it’s something you still enjoy.”

❛ no , neither am i . after all , it’s all very tedious isn’t it ? going through all of this once was quite enough for a lifetime . ❜ narcissa pursed her lips , she was far too tired of all of the nonsense . ❛ what a bore , we have to fix that right away . ❜ maybe this wasn’t her cassia then . she should have known immediately to be cautious , but she’d never had anything to worry about with her . dorcas , however , wasn’t someone she’d have so calmly brought up in conversion in her timeline , rather she was never mentioned to narcissa . it was a sharp betrayal that she never could stand for , and hiding her hurt wasn’t always easy . ❛ and here I thought we were friends . of course i do . i slipped some firewhiskey into my luggage , ❜ glossed lips curved upwards slightly at the corners , before she slipped a diamond embellishedflask from the pocket of her skirt , one her parents had been far too distracted with figuring out what was real to notice missing . ❛ and voila . ❜
going through all of this once was enough? cassia paused again, eyebrows furrowing only slightly. “this mix-and-match timeline stuff is really getting annoying...” she groaned quietly, already wanting this year to be over with. with a particularly easy deduction, cassia figured this was timeline two narcissa --- at least that’s what she felt, given the slytherin’s earlier remark. with a small shake of her head, cassia tried to ignore it. surely they were still friends, despite however envious cassia felt towards the blonde during their childhoods. at least in her timeline. inevitably, it lead her into the questions of, what was this narcissa’s like? was it somehow different or exactly the same? for someone who told themselves they didn’t want to know, she couldn’t quell her curiosity. “we are friends,” she spoke up this time, her words coming out as a reaffirmation. but, eyeing the flask, cassia grinned. “and it certainly wouldn’t be a party without good firewhiskey.”

Jasmine rolled her eyes. “That’s the whole point, though, they’re different timelines. Just because that one survived without it doesn’t mean this one can,” she replied, glancing up at the other girl. In any universe, she would have supported pure-bloods - it just differed in how she’d do that. “We’re different people, different things happened to us, that’s why everything’s different. Notice how I keep repeating one particular word? That’s the most important one.” She said pleasantly.
“wow, you can’t see it but i’m rolling my inner eye.” cassia sighed, shaking her head. “if everything is so different, then how come speaking to you still gives me a headache?” the remark came out before she could bite her tongue, though a vague part of her couldn’t care less about it. “also, the idea of an entire society not being able to survive without a war? by far one of the most ridiculous things i’ve heard --- and i’ve heard a lot. what’s so beneficial about it, anyway?”

“WELL, i personally like to think that the squid is a pacifist and would thus lie down her weapons and refuse to fight, either way. she could retreat in the water, of course, fled easily —- a coward’s way out, maybe, but also an honourable way, should the willow insist on fighting her…” glenda thought for a moment, brows furrowed together, before laughing. “jesus, what am i going on about?” giggles burst past her lips for a moment, and then she stopped — “oh! but what if the tree was moved to stand on the edge of the water? that would change everything, wouldn’t it? i just hope the squid would win — i like her better, but maybe aggression would win still and in that case … it’s the willow who’d win, huh?”
“hey, we have to make things lighthearted around here somehow.” cassia chuckled, preferring this to talking about the differences in the switched reality. though thinking about the proposed scenario, she hummed. “i hope the squid would win, too --- it’d be nice to show aggression doesn’t always work as a tactic. but i think that old tree might have a little too much pent-up anger... unless we have a tag-team and the squid can distract the willow long enough for someone to cut it down.” a pause. “wait, would that be cheating? surely not, if the willow had aid, too. then it’s two versus two and it would just be being strategic. right?”

“ sweet, darling cassia, “ nate began, his tone light and teasing as he stepped up next to the girl with a somewhat shit-eating grin on his face. “ I want to ask how your summer was but that feels a very loaded question this year. “ he took a moment to take a drink, and when he lowered his cup his smile was more subdued, his tone a little more sincere. “ but I think I’ll ask anyway, and ask also if you’ve got any visions for me. “
at least there were somethings that stayed the same. “you’re definitely right about it being a loaded question, nate.” she laughed, a smile of her own brightening her expression. “well, let’s see... oh! i went off and partly dyed my hair over the summer --- blue, you know so it didn’t clash with my tie too much.” but gesturing to her usual dark hair, she feigned a momentary pout. “though as you can see, it’s gone now. apparently this... me? didn’t have the same idea. which is unfortunate because it looked cool.” soon with a pause, she pretended to think about the second half of his question. “all i can say right now is stay away from the black lake,” cassia spoke cryptically, wondering if he’d be able to tell she wasn’t serious. “but what about you? not even my inner eye will help me pinpoint what you did over the summer.”

Sirius smirked a bit at the words she spoke. Yes, of course she would come and find him. She always did, no matter how discreet he thought he had been about leaving. Of course, this might not be the Cassia from his timeline. There was a chance she wasn’t, but he didn’t think that was the case. “And here I was thinking I slipped away without much notice. Stalking me in this timeline too I see?” His smirk grew. Of course he didn’t mean that; he was always very glad for her company whenever she followed him out of the parties he’d been forced to attend. “Here,” he offered, holding up a cigarette for her to take.
“oh, don’t you wish that was the case.” she grinned, rolling her eyes as she took the offered cigarette. “maybe i have visions of you getting into trouble, and i come along to make sure they don’t happen. you’d never even know.” her words weren’t true, but she tried to sound as convincing as she could. whatever it was really, cassia didn’t mind it; being around sirius was a nice change in comparison to her other friends. “i am glad to have found you, though. this party obviously wouldn’t have been the same if we couldn’t keep up the tradition, don’t you think?”

“Please tell me you didn’t just say that?”
“what, that i think war is pointless?” cassia tilted her head slightly, still unbelieving that somehow they really went to war over blood purity. in her timeline it was tense, but regardless, she’d take biting tongues over the apparent alternative any day. eyeing jasmine warily as silence formed between them, the brunette was only vaguely aware of her other selves. how she stuck with her family, how she picked their side --- but that wasn’t her. this cassia, admittedly, wasn’t as quick to pick a side when it came to something like this. ( hell, the ravenclaw didn’t know what a ‘death eater’ was until the realities merged, and she still was confused; how could she be here and support their cause? ) “timeline one survived without it and so could this one, if people realize it’s likely only going to do more damage than good.” if only her so-called parents could hear her now.

“Can I ask you something?,” she begins, tone still grave before a smile sneaks on her lips. Glenda Chittock dealt with tough situations in one of two ways: she either got pissed off or laughed it off. Tonight she had chosen to go with the latter. Maybe later, she would give in to her rage and fire and burn up, but for now she was set on having a good fucking time. ( Who knew — maybe it’d be the last time, as the world was apparently in shambles. ) “In a fight, who do you think would win? The whomping willow or the giant squid?”
“would the giant squid be able to survive without water in this fight?” cassia asked, eyebrows furrowing at the question presented to her. “because if not, then the whomping willow would possibly take the win.” this was a very serious matter to discuss, of course. “but on the other side,” she started again after she took a drink. “the squid has long tentacles and that could mean disaster for the tree branches --- no matter how violent it is, wouldn’t you think?”

❛ hear , hear ! ❜ she said , mimicking the motions of the other girl. her tone was playful , knowing that was exactly what was going to end up happening. with the situation they were forced into , how could it not ? it was a recipe for distaster , at least , that’s how hestia viewed it. ❛ in all honesty , i’m not keeping my expectations high. i’m just hoping the teachers take it somewhat easy on us tomorrow. ❜
“if they don’t take it easy on us, i think i might scream.” cassia sighed, not even sure which professors were from which timeline themselves. either way though, she had hoped a little that they would understand regardless. it must’ve been difficult for them, too, surely. “but, i guess it might take our minds off the erumpent in the room, you know?” soon she paused, realizing a potential flaw. “merlin, i hope this version of me had the brain to take classes i also like.” if she suddenly found herself in something like herbology tomorrow, she was absolutely going to scream.

“thank you,” he said, flushing at the half-compliment and the awkward situation. he nodded along with her response but tensed at the question. as grateful as he usually was when people cut to the point, he was rather enjoying ignoring his own past - and hoping that he wouldn’t have to return to it. “the war was over, i think they’re calling it timeline two? what about you?” putting the attention back on her distracted him from the train of thought that was following his own answer.
oh there it was. suddenly she felt bad, forgetting that some people had to live through war --- something she never thought she’d ever deal with, in any capacity. “i’m from the one with no war. timeline one,” cassia spoke finally, a tentative smile pulling at her lips. it was so odd to refer to her life as a number, as if it was just another thing to be forgotten. perhaps because it was in a way. it didn’t settle right with her, but she tried to understand others not sharing the same preservation. her timeline wasn’t perfect, far from it, but it was hers; no war to threaten their youth, no tales of madmen and dark wizards seeking ( or gaining ) more power than they should have. with a soft sigh, cassia smiled again, pulling herself from thoughts of her own. “hey... do you still like astronomy?” she tried to approach a different subject. maybe timeline talk was too heavy to dive into right now.

❛ she didn’t have bad taste , exactly . the very idea of that is unsettling . but i’m afraid i haven’t worn anything like that in quite some time . ❜ this narcissa was likely still much more guarded , without the safety net of pureblood society to hold on to her . it carried into her clothing , if even the slightest bit . she’d changed in that year down to the core , her wardrobe choices changing with her . narcissa sighed , taking another drink . ❛ exactly . i’m not about to slip into her life so quickly . it’s dreadful after all . everything here is . ❜ it was almost laughable that that was exactly what she was to do . she’d been quite a lot more open after the war had ended in her timeline , after all she’d had nothing to lose . and yet now ? she had everything . bringing her attention back to her , narcissa continued . ❛ which brings to question , where’s your drink cassia ? surely you aren’t drinking water all night . ❜
“this timeline... i am not a fan, i’ll admit.” cassia shook her head, trying not to remember how harsh her parents seemed here. even more so than what she was used to; at least the parents she knew were a quiet seething, and not ones to be overly vocal about their disappointment. it didn’t help she didn’t have her twin in this reality, apparently he never existed here. it was as if cassia was silently grieving a memory. at the mention of her drink however, the ravenclaw blinked. “oh! i promised dorcas i would stay as safe as possible tonight, so i’ve been attempting to pace myself. just in case.” she paused, sheepishly smiling. “why, do you have a better alternative?”

little family stuff concerning timelines under the cut because i’m an indecisive heaux and figured out what i finally wanted to set as their canon.
in TIMELINE ONE, cassia has an older brother named rowan and a twin brother named florian. her parents are basil and marisol. basil works as a potioneer, while marisol is a stay at home mum ( or at least when the children were little, now she likes to have tea with other pureblood mothers and gossip about literally anything... except when it comes to cassia’s seer abilities --- she knows her daughter is open about it, it’s no secret, but regardless she hates discussing it. )
rowan works in the department of magical accidents and catastrophes as an obliviator ( and will eventually become pansy’s father ) cassia is a seventh year ravenclaw, meanwhile florian is a seventh year slytherin. marisol tries her damn hardest to get her children marriages, more so than her husband does, because she wants to see their pure lineage expand.
...
in TIMELINE TWO, everything is the same, except cassia isn’t very open about her seer abilities and her parents are more disapproving. with the war won in this timeline, marisol has an even higher need to pair her children off to other suitable purebloods. they’re stronger in numbers, she says. not because she necessarily wants grandchildren or in-law’s, but because she wants to keep hierarchy.
...
in TIMELINE THREE, things are suddenly different. cassia still exists, as does rowan. so do her parents. her original timeline three self wasn’t open to her abilities as a seer at first, though was getting help from friends to be self-accepting. but it was a nightmare come true for cass, learning that florian doesn’t exist. when she brings it up to these versions of her parents ( similar to timeline two, yet somehow worse because their society’s winning of the war isn’t as secure as they’d like ), they shrug her off.
they’re confused, and marisol laughs in disbelief --- she only has one son. only one, and he’s her pride and joy. basil is surprisingly more sympathetic to how distressed cassia appears, but even he takes it with a grain of salt. it’s ridiculous. cassia doesn’t have a twin. not here. rowan is indifferent after learning about this alleged younger brother --- she said his name is ( was ) florian, didn’t she? it doesn't bother him. how could it? cassia’s alone, and the burning ache in her chest hardly leaves as she passes by family portraits hanging on the cold walls of their house. someone’s missing and only she remembers.

atlas had seen cassia in astronomy club, before he stopped going - maybe he’d start going again now that the timeline was different, but they hadn’t been particularly close. “yeah, same. it’s good to see you. you look good,” he rambled slightly, offering an awkward half-smile. she looked different somehow, the difference not large enough to name but enough to notice. “it’s busy, which is different from what i’m used to. things haven’t been this busy since.” he trails off unsure if he should say since the end of the war or the timeline mess-up so he says nothing.
“and you don’t look half bad yourself.” she chuckled, noticing the inevitable awkwardness. there wasn’t much point in mentioning it, she figured, it would likely be like this for awhile. however at the end of his sentence, or rather the lack of, cassia could only nod. “i think i get what you mean...” while she wouldn’t have necessarily minded ignoring anything that transpired, this was shaping up to be one of those things she couldn’t sweep under a metaphorical rug. though, there was one question she couldn’t stop from all but blurting out. “which timeline were you from?”

the first day back in the castle was always going to be difficult , & hestia was fully aware of this fact. although she had never imagined anything like THIS. there was an awkward tension that had filled the air during the welcome feast , that hestia was glad to leave & make way for the party. it was still an awkward feeling , being around so many of her peers that she had known for so long , yet felt so unfamiliar with. at least there was alcohol.
with a firewhiskey in her hand , she found herself a spot where it was less crowded to make herself somewhat comfortable. ❛ i’m surprised to see a turn out like this. seems like everybody made it out tonight , despite everything. i guess that’s nice. ❜
“it certainly is something else.” she hummed quietly, watching how everyone came together. it wasn’t what she thought would happen, not by a long shot; the feast wasn’t very comfortable, but at least this setting was a bit more tolerable. all things considered it could have been worse. ( while a nagging voice in the back of her head reminded her things could easily escalate. ) “here’s to no one throwing up in places they shouldn’t...” cassia tentatively raised her half empty cup, “or worse.”

being around familiar faces should have been a form of comfort for narcissa . still , being around people who shared the names and backgrounds of her companions proved difficult for her . her sisters proved to be who caused her the most fear . and yet , she would stand tall . she hadn’t been called the snow queen for nothing , after all . taking a sip of her firewhiskey , her eyes landed back on the brunette’s visage . ❝ i’ve only been in this timeline for a short time , and yet i already need to place an owl order in . ❞ her next words slipped out with an almost smile , said at the high risk of sounding vain . ❛ i hate all my nightgowns, and i hate all my underwear too . ❜ / @soothsayerrrr
after hearing the blonde’s confession, cassia couldn’t stop the small bout of laughter slipping past her lips. “so does that mean the you originally from this timeline had bad taste?” the notion that any version of narcissa had less than quality clothing, no matter what it was, seemed absurd to her. but taking a drink of her water, thanks to dorcas’s insisting, she shook her head. “i mean, if i didn’t like mine i probably would’ve done the same. why settle with what you don’t like, you know?”
