Chekhov's gun (or Chekhov's rifle; Russian: Чеховское ружьё) is a narrative principle emphasizing that every element in a story be necessary, while irrelevant elements should be removed. For example, if a gun features in a story, there must be a reason for it, such as being fired at some later point.

my thunderbolts* letterboxd review!
I thought I'd share this as a sort of basic overview of my main thoughts on the film, before I finally upload some of the rants about it I've been sharing on my Instagram. This is from my first watch on May 1st. TL;DR: a great film in many regards - but disappointing in terms of Bucky.
I’ve followed this film for so long, through every step of production available to the public. I’ve honestly never been so invested in a film before - it feels surreal that I’ve now finally watched it in full. And it was good! Certainly the best Marvel movie in a long time. I’m glad of that fact. This is going to be a long review! It will eventually contain some minor spoilers about Bucky’s role in the film, but nothing massively impactful to the plot :)
Florence Pugh really shone - this was very much Yelena’s film. Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russell and David Harbour also stood out to me. Fantastic performances all round! I did love the tone of this film; the emphasis on mental health was very strong, and well suited to these particular characters. I’m glad they were able to exist in this narrative space - it’s exactly what I’d hoped the writers would take advantage of, ever since they first announced the cast. This may very well be my own fault for overanalysing all of the trailers etc, but I found it easy to predict the film, scene to scene, from what footage they’d already released. There weren’t many scenes which were completely previously unseen, in one way or another. Son Lux did an amazing job with the score - I loved the swelling darkness they were able to create to reflect Void and the themes of the film. A small wish, but I would’ve really liked to have heard more of the individual characters’ original leitmotifs/themes too. The Thunderbolts’ theme is epic, though, somehow capturing the dark truths of these characters, and yet also the hope they now represent.
This rest of this review will be very Bucky-centric, as that’s what’s on my mind the most right now. He’s one of my favourite characters of all time (peek my username), so I have some thoughts…
My main criticism of this film is that Bucky deserved better as a character. This was a real missed opportunity to do some legitimately interesting emotional and psychological stuff with him, within the context of these characters and themes of the film. Instead, where he could’ve brought much more to the team, he was mostly just standing on the sidelines. He was advertised as having a sort of mentor role in this film - sharing a kinship with this group, and being able to guide them as he has processed his trauma more than the rest of them. There is one moment where this comes to the surface in the film, but then he just sort of tags along with the group, never given the time to bond with them properly. Ironically, his depiction in this film honestly feels rather lacking in compassion, giving his kinship with all of the group. He’s just grumpy most of the time - the main exception being his interactions with Mel. The post-credit scene made up for this a bit, for me - getting to see him mentoring Yelena a bit at the end was what I wished the rest of the film was like. Also, although I suspected he might not get any due to the (correct) rumours of short screen time, I was really hoping for some Bucky/Void scenes; there was truly so much potential there.
After being in the MCU for 15 years now, and one of only two characters to be in every Phase, this particular film was finally the perfect opportunity for Bucky to have some well deserved spotlight. They fast-tracked his “healing journey” in TFATWS, and this film could’ve been a good remedy to that, with surrounding characters and themes that suit him perfectly, but… yeah. Another missed opportunity. He remains, in my eyes, one of the longest-standing characters with the most untapped potential in the MCU. It still baffles me that Marvel doesn’t see that. He will most likely have even less screen time in Doomsday, which makes it hurt even more that they didn’t do him justice in this film. If he doesn’t get a solo project soon (or at least one which is more centred on him), this may well have been the last opportunity to do something really good with Bucky :(
In summary, this was a good film, and I loved the dynamic between the members of the Thunderbolts (mainly Yelena, John, and Ava) a lot. Bob was great; Lewis Pullman is a fantastic addition to the MCU. I’m disappointed but not surprised about Bucky in this film - which may taint my perception of it overall as the initial excitement wears off. I’m seeing it again soon, and will likely write another review about some other specifics then!
P.S. If you agree with this review, I suggest reading “The Winter Soldier: Second Chances” (2018). I believe that this kind of story would’ve been perfect for where he is mentally by this point in the MCU, and what his writing in Thunderbolts* should’ve been like.
