Alice in Wonderland Meets Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Here begins the epic saga that was this tiny, week-long, 7+ hour ordeal. And it began, as do all these journeys, with a seemingly innocent prompt.
Tumblr media
I was really excited about this one! Every 4 weeks I get strapped to an IV for 2.5 hours, so I figured this pompt would be perfect for me to work on there. I had it all planned out. I was going to take a picture from the clinic window and go to town. Normally, I aim to work 30-60 minutes on my daily sketches, but I figured, heck! Why not take the opportunity to draw for as long as I can instead of screwing around on my phone.
All seemed to be perfect. I got to the clinic and took this picture:

Parking lots... so inspiring. So I waited for the nurse to attach my IV so I could start my art. I doodled and sketched for a whopping 10 minutes before I decided that parking lots.... suck.
Tumblr media
So does drawing with my sketchbook on my knee. So I put it away and figured I'd have another look later. Later ended up being the next day, and I was so disenchanted with the parking lot photo, so I figured hey! Let's go find a better window with a better view.
I took this photo of the backyard:
Tumblr media
I was genuinely excited at the prospect of drawing some pop art squirrels! But once again, when I sat down to my drawing, I could not decide if I should continue with the original parking lot, or if I should draw my squirrels. Being a fan of the metaphysical, I turned to my tarot for the answer.
Tumblr media
(My favourite deck is my Oriens Animal Tarot deck) I won't bore you with the explanation of the cards, the important thing is that the cards on the left represent working on the parking lot, and the ones onthe right, are for the backyard picture... The cards were very clear; neither subject would do 馃槅
So, off I went to yet another window.
Tumblr media
I thought I was well on my way. I started sketching
Tumblr media
And that's all I got done. In 2 hours. I hate being at the muse's whim, but that's life. Some days... just don't work. Exhausted and frustrated, I put it aside. I came back to it finally almost a week later and in 10 minutes I had added the purple:
Tumblr media
All that was left to do was add that popart colourful stuff. Which, I did over the next 2 days. In the end, it took about 6 hours (I timed it.) I needed solid colour to acheive some semblence of pop art.
Tumblr media
The final touch was going to be lining, which I decided to tackle today. I started out using my Micron lining pens...
Tumblr media
That required 3 different pens because the waxy pencil dust kept coating the felt tips 馃槪 So I said to hell with it!! I'm a graphic designer! I can do this on the computer! 馃ぃ
And so ends the epic saga. I like the results with the dark lining, it looks like something out of an acid dream... Hence "Alice in Wonderland Meets Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" along with a bonus of just the outlines (yay Photoshop layers!)

If you read all of this, you're clearly invested now. Why not go visit my website and see what else you can find 馃槈
Cheers!

Hi everyone!
I missed a few days, mini stay-cation to a friend's cottage. Good friends, Good booze, Good games, Good times! But not much sketching. So I figured I'd better get back into it :-)
Today's Sketchbook Challenge, thanks to my sketchbook prompt randomizer book by Jennifer Orkin Lewis:
I sketched the outline using a 0.7mm mechanical pencil with pink lead, then colored it in using Prismacolor Pencils, and then I traced some of the edges with a black felt tip pen. The additional challenge of limiting it to a 30 minute sketch was fun, but I'm going back to a full hour for the next one.
Cheers!

Well, today's 1 hour sketch came with the prompts:
St-Basil's Cathedral, Gouache (I used acrilics)/flat layering technique, Rust red-goldenyellow-dustyeggplant(like the one in my fridge)
This was a challenge, not gonna lie, and in a world where people tend to only post perfection, it's kind of taking everything in me to share this with the world.
Don't judge me on my imperfections, rather judge my courage to try.

Second sketch today! I ran out of time so I couldn't complete the crumpled T-Shirt (thank goodness! Drapery is NOT easy haha)
I chose to use colouring pencils because it's not a medium I've played with a lot in recent years but when I was in high school it was the main medium I used because every week for 3 years our art teacher made us do full 9x12 Prismacolor compositions.

The first in my new "Sketch-a-Day" initiative. I suck at starting new habits though, so if I end up posting just every other day.... Please forgive me for I am perfectly imperfect ;-)
I've been working on learning hand lettering techniques and then applying the same techniques to digital lettering. Developing new skills is a journey, and making a career out of being an artist, means spending more time honing my craft and developing my illustrative style.
