🍛Doing some cooking recording on black friday! This dish, which is very tasty, needs some special seasoning though. 😉 The maraca and guiro both have roots in South America and west Africa going back thousands of years. It is said that in music, the guiro or a set of maracas are the glue that holds both African and Latin American music together. If you are not accustomed to the folk and popular music from these continents then you may not hear it directly until you see someone playing them but without them, it always feels like something is missing. They may seem like the most "easy" of the percussion instruments to play but they take some serious coordination and practice to have control of the feel or rhythmic interpretation on simple 8'th and 16'th note patterns. Working on some Mozambique tumbaos in the NYC style in the song "Que Suena La Orquesta" by el maestro Eddie Palmieri. The last clip, I was playing in the descarga section over the tumbao on congas and the timbale and bell pattern (which you will hear later as soon as I can figure out that montuno on piano) is definitely inspired by the great conguero Tommy Lopez but no, I'm not even close haha! I need to transcribe his descarga on this tune. Tommy played on a lot of Eddie's records, he recorded on all of Stan Kenton's latin stuff, Gary McFarland, Cal Tjader, Armando Peraza, Eric Dolphy, Gil Evans, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and many others. 🥁 Working on some Mozambique NYC style by el maestro Eddie Palmieri!! When you need a specific sound but don't have that instrument, you have to experiment to find a temporary solution! This is my temporary solution for timbales (pues, una timbal 🙋🏾‍♂️) using a 90's Ludwig Rocker steel snare drum and an old Yamaha steel snare. I have been going back and working on some music that I love but rarely get the opportunity to play around my city except for a small handful of times in the last decade. Here's video # 3 of 5 videos on the (NYC) Mozambique rhythm at medium, slow and up tempo. This simplified version is inspired by the playing of the great Elvin Jones on John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme " Pt. I Acknowledgement. Now this is not exactly note for note with how he phrases the cross stick and rack tom but it's the feel he played on the ride cymbal and the push into the next measure with the floor tom leading to the bass drum. I advise you to grab that record (or digital file), grab the beverage of your choice, some descent over the ear head phones or separated stereo speakers, sit down and read through the linear notes before you start then just listen... Just listen.. The whole album not just Pt I Acknowledgement. Don't analyze it the first few times through, just feel in which directions the energy flows... This video is a drumset only version used by Tommy Igoe in his Groove Essentials. I use Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials with young students who are not familiar with much music or new comers to the kit who are just getting into fundamentals and need the opportunity to play some simple grooves and learn how to make them work. It's a great resource! After that we go deeper into those styles with the traditional folk music or known "classics" and work on the hand percussion instruments related to the style to gain a better understanding why certain patterns are being played on the kit, their origins and other possibilities. 🥁Using what I have to learn on. I originally bought these @sennheiser e609's for live sound reinforcement of my darbuka and a frame drum. For the past week though I've been recording tumbadoras (congas) and I figured I may as well start learning how to gate and EQ toms but still get my sound. I only have a 2 channel interface for the time being, seems like a great opportunity to find out how much of what other freqs are bleeding through. I'm sure the e908's would be a better solution but, no likey that cabling😔.. 🥁It's been a while since I have played this kit since getting the blue sparkle back in May. The CS dot heads, the Acrolite and the general sound of the kit makes me play differently! Having some of THE BEST pizza from Due Amici @due_amici_ybor in historic Ybor City for the first time since the first week of March. Yes, roosters/chickens are prevalent here in Ybor, they are actually protected because they are a unique bread of chickens that have been here since the 1800's when Cubans, Spaniards, Italians and some Americans built this city thanks to José Marti through the Cuban cigar trade which led to the Tampa being settled and built.
