Mermay Day 24: Watercolor 🪷

I don’t know how you watercolor painters do it, but I couldn’t resist using the thicker consistencies of gouache to finish this painting. Washes aren’t really my forte. I even went in with some colored pencils for details.

The merman is escaping discovery, hoping to flee before he is noticed by the intruders.

This is the last drawing I have for Mermay and I have to say it was a lot of fun! I learned that I wasn’t gonna like all the prompts and that it’s okay to skip out on some of them, especially when the artist fatigue gets to me. That wasn’t gonna stop me from giving my all on the other drawings I made this month! I can see a change in my drawing style, leaning toward curly, repeated lines, but I can’t see an overall improvement.

I’m proud of myself for finally participating in this drawing challenge that I’ve always wanted to be part of but never had the time. It wasn’t perfect, and the resulting pictures were not the ones I had in my head, but that’s the fun of it. I eagerly await the Mermay prompts for next year!

Mermay Day 25: Tsunami 🌊

I didn’t wanna just draw a mermaid in the waves. So I removed the water from the picture entirely. But before the tsunami strikes, the ocean flees from the land before returning in full force, sweeping everything away in its path.

I know I said I’d post my final Mermay drawing today, but that was when I thought I’d have it finished by now. To be continued!

Mermay Day 31: Serenity 🦪

What a nice, comfy scene for two loving merpeople. It’s been such a long and refreshing month of drawing every day. This one symbolizes how much I’m going rest after Mermay. They don’t call it a drawing challenge for nothing!

I can’t help but give 100% of my effort to things like this, but sometimes, I just lose the motivation and skip some of the days. And I’m glad I did. I was able to come back full-force and make this and Exoskeleton.

I’ll reflect more tomorrow during my actual last Mermay posts. Fly with you!

Hey, viewers! It's been a few days, but I promise I haven't given up on Mermay. You haven't seen me because I've been relaxing for the weekend, since this daily routine of drawing for hours gave me major artist fatigue. But I'm back! And more great drawings are coming again tomorrow. Even a watercolor painting is in store.

Mermay Day 22: Stitch 🪡

A classic sewing machine stitch is made with a top and bottom thread. I decided to sew the sea using mermen instead.

Mermay Day 22: Psychedelic 😵‍💫

Once again, I have produced a drawing that I did not plan. This time, I’m very happy with it! I had planned drawing somebody tripping with highlighter colors in their eyes and waves around them, but I remembered my favorite part of the psychedelic art movement: band posters, which were often designed after art nouveau posters. So I tried my hand at the style, really taking my time.

Mermay Day 20: Clown 🤡

Hey, fairies! Here’s the cute mermaid I drew for this prompt, even though she’s not very good at her job. She’s based on Pierrot and Jojo’s Circus. I know clowns are supposed to have color, but I’m too tired from the Bioluminescent drawing to fill her in today. I promise that soon, she’ll be rightfully decked in primary colors.

Mermay Day 19: Bioluminescent 💡

This is not the picture I intended to make for this prompt, but I found myself drawn to the creature that strikes such terror in me. It’s based on the flashlight fish. My least favorite fish, it appears with huge, angry glowing eyes which are actually patches of bioluminescent bacteria on its cheeks. But in the dark, the fish bodies do not appear, only their twitching, frantically-moving eyes. I decided to transform the erratic fish into a graceful mermaid as a way to face my irrational fear of them.

This drawing took a very long time due to the complicated design and method of coloring. I’m surprised at how well it turned out.

A siren queen casts a spell on you to make you dazzling as a mermaid. It’s a lot more successful than my previous drawing cause I really wanted to do it.

Mermay Day 17: Eccentric

I was super lost with this prompt and finding out what I wanted to draw for it. Today kinda felt like I drew out of necessity rather than joy or excitement and it shows. She’s a cute mermaid, but…I’m not happy with the end result. I wish I’d left it as a sketch instead of going over it with ink.

Hello, fellow fairies. I was a day late to this month-long drawing challenge, so I combined the first two prompts into one, resulting in this lovely picture of a mermaid seeing stars for the very first time! I was inspired by 2010s galaxy print as a reflection of the cosmos on the water. Now I'm fully caught up!

The colors of the peach merperson were super difficult. They got cuter once I added more pink, but where I’m from, peaches have a yellower undertone like the tail.
