Science rules! Go Ladies in STEM!
Since I’m not seeing her name nearly enough on the press, let’s give the attention Katie Bouman deserves. Thanks to her, we are now possible to see the first ever image of a black hole, something that people talked 200 years ago for the first time. It’s no longer a myth. We are girls and we can be whatever we want to be. Einstein would be proud of you, Katie. Thank you!

Here you can see a huge stack of hard drives she used for Messier 87’s black hole image data.

THIS IS AMAZING
Tumblr media
To be honest, we had done this cosplay as a personal project. We love Reboot, and we love this episode in particular. It’s just so ridiculous. We wanted to remind people about the good ol’ days of great television.
We weren’t sure just how people were going to react, but people freaked out! People would either get it right away, or it would take a few minutes. The sudden realization on people’s faces after it finally came to them was priceless. They would stop and ask, “This is Reboot right……OMG I REMEMBER THIS EPISODE! Where’s Mik…. YOU EVEN HAVE A MIKE. NINETY NINE NINETY NINE NINETY NIIIIIIINE.”
Turns out this particular episode, just like it had been for us, was a favorite to many. There were many ‘WARNING: Incoming Game!’ thrown our way that day. Another fun story: We had originally done this cosplay for a con in Vancouver, BC in early March and Gavin Blair, the co-creator of Reboot came to join us and hang out that afternoon. So it was pretty amazing getting to know and befriend one of the minds behind some of my favorite characters. People would come up to us, tell us how much they loved Reboot and want photos….then see Gavin and REALLY freak out.
Raquel and I met each other 10 years ago this summer. It was our first con, and our first cosplays! I was a Moogle from Final Fantasy, she was Dot from Reboot. Being a fan of the show, I was in awe at the amount of detail she put into the costume and the amount of passion she had for the character/show. We quickly became friends. Throughout the years, we occasionally talked about doing a cosplay together, but never really settled on anything. She had done a few variations of Dot by now, which sparked the idea in my head. I REALLY WANTED TO REBOOT.
So I approached her about doing a Reboot group from one of my favorite episodes titled: Wizards, warriors and a word from our sponsor! It was an episode that always stuck with me, being a fantasy geek, and just the sheer ridiculousness of the whole episode had left it’s mark on me growing up. As it turns out, it was one of her favorite episodes too! So we laughed and made the plan. We put the word out to a couple others and managed to piece the group together. Now here we are, cosplaying Reboot on our 10 year friendversary. How fun!

I started weightlifting when at my heaviest because I recognized that I needed a change. I needed to become healthier and I was under the impression that I couldn't work out, that I would just hurt myself and make it worse. I felt shame and hatred towards myself and It finally got to the point that I realized I wasn't happy. I was also sabotaging my relationships because if I can't love me, no one can. That was all in all, not a great place to be.
So I started to work out with friends, who convinced me that yes, I can still work out. And I started calorie counting. With hard work, and lots of encouragement from my partner and friends, I lost 25 pounds. I still had work to go, but the holidays hit and drama in my life caught up with me. I droped the diet, but kept the workout. I enjoyed how much of a badass I felt when I lifted. I got to the point where I could squat my own weight, I could was getting close to that with my deadlifts and bench presses as well. I was over the moon with progress and then an injury hit. I worked hard to get back to where I was and made great progress once more. Still, after a year of being slack on my diet, I gained back 15 of those pounds and I knew I needed to really take a deeper approach. I needed to understand what I was eating, why, and how to listen to my own body again.
I started to add cardio in, because I needed more calroies. I felt like I was starving myself and seeing no results. Cardio felt like a chore, my restrictive diet wasn't yeilding results and both felt like a chore. I hated running, it hurt, and I could never seem to find that "runner's high." Still I pressed on, I changed up my diet. I actually increased my calorie alotment since and that seemed to help and then majorly tried to increase protein so that I wouldn't be hungry between meals.
Then this year, I finally did something that I've been meaning to for a long time, I took up a martial arts. One single class made me exhausted, but I was delighted. I felt like a badass. I picked up calorie counting again and started to focus on eating higher protein meals and doing my best to cut out simple carbs (sugars, breads, etc). I also made it a goal to try and work out every day. And barring an occational rest-day and an illness. I've managed to go to the gym 6-7 times a week for the past 9 months. I'm now down 25 pounds.
So yes, exercise is a celebration of what your body can do. It's also a lot of work. Working out has been a useful tool for getting me calories back in my calorie restricted diet, but the working out itself has done so much more. With all the cardio from my martial arts, I discovered that I could run a mile. I finally found that runner's high and I ran my first 5k last month. I'm signed up for another next month. I am advancing in my martial arts training and I'll ready to test for my Orange belt in just a few months.
So yes, working out is great for you, but my advice is slightly different: Find a work out that isn't a chore. Find something that makes you feel like a badass.
tumblr
Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do.
It is not
a punishment for what you have eaten
a way to compensate for “extra” calories
or just a means to lose weight.
No matter where you’re starting at, enjoy the process and be kind to your body, you deserve it.
