The Bowtie Aquamarine crystals drape over a matrix of beautiful rhombs of potassium feldspar, with a few accompanying prisms of schorl (black tourmaline), displaying the typical three faced crystal termination of this mineral. The specimen is large, measuring 32.5 x 22.9 x 12.8 cm, and was broken in half when found in a pocket in a pegmatite, being glued together at a later date. The join isn’t perfect, because a small amount of aqua recrystallised on the broken surface after whatever geological force that sundered it in twain wrought its work. The deserts of North Africa regularly send plumes of dust out over the Atlantic. Here a strong wind has driven a huge plume of dust all the way across the Atlantic to the mouth of the Amazon River in South America.
