I was thinking about reasons why Shang Qinghua might intentionally jump ship from Mobei-Jun over to Luo Binghe, and it occurred to me that while Mobei-Jun IS perhaps the most prominent threat to Airplane's life due to being Shang Qinghua's murderer in PIDW, Mobei-Jun is also potentially Airplane's only ticket through the story alive as Shang Qinghua.

Because Shang Qinghua is a Cang Qiong Peak Lord. And Luo Binghe is going to destroy Cang Qiong Mountain Sect. Even if Airplane begs and bargains and grovels better than anyone has ever done it, he's still going to be a figure of authority who didn't do anything while Shen Qingqiu treated Luo Binghe like shit. If Luo Binghe is having a bad day that day, Shang Qinghua is pretty badly screwed. Running away to live in hiding is an option, yeah, but also: Shen Yuan apparently determined that the only sure escape from the vengeful OP protagonist who never forgets, never forgives, and never loses was to ditch his own body in order to fake his death!

As Luo Binghe's right-hand man, Mobei-Jun is one of the few people who could request a former Cang Qiong Peak Lord's life and actually have it granted to him. If Shen Yuan hadn't shown up and changed everything, Airplane sparing his future murderer's life - which is, perhaps, the first piece of proof Airplane gets that the story can be changed at all - might have ultimately saved his own life from a much bigger threat. (I don't think Airplane was thinking that far ahead at the time, but I assume it occurred to him as an excuse over the years.)

And mmm, that's a delicious scene to imagine in a No Shen Yuan AU: Airplane waiting to see if Mobei-Jun will bother to stand between him and a vengeful Demon Emperor. Mobei-Jun having to deal with the fact that Luo Binghe is MUCH more powerful than him and if he wants Shang Qinghua to live, he'll actually have to ask for it, maybe even beg for it.
