Just finished rewatching the older Total Drama seasons and frankly I found it both more enjoyable and worse than I remembered at the same time.

Here are my general thoughts afterwards:

The characters were written extremely flat and continued to be flat in each new season, the more screen time they had the move you could fill in blanks and form a character. That's why it felt like certain characters had character development when they really didn't (the one dimensional characters would have worked fine if the series had a rotating cast from the start but that was probably a hard sell)

It's has a lot more misogyny then I remembered (among other questionable things) They really used Zeke as a scapegoat to make the others look better

It seemed like romance was a bigger part of the series then it actually was, most characters just get together and are pretty much set (outside of the dreaded love triangle)

Shipping is pretty hard between the flat personalities and the fact there is very little time for any character interactions for whatever reason (it won't stop me but I'm putting far more thought behind the possible ships then I would normally have to)

Honestly it's sad that they got rid of the Aftermath episodes after WT, it would have been fun seeing Geoff and Brigette talking to the new characters after they got booted

What even is the timeline!! Like tdi happens during summer break and tda happens mere days later is that still summer break or are they now skipping school? Then there is not a given time for between tda to tdwt and from tdwt to tdroti but we do know that a year passes between tdroti and tdas (Cody's birthday happens during tdwt so that means at least almost a year since tdi right??) Darn cartoon logic making them not change physically (outside of a few hair issues and the mutating for a select few) but it also treats them like they're 16 forever despite the original cast members probably being at least 18 by the time of All Stars

Unironically actually enjoyed Dramarama more than the original series (they're so precious) I still think Total Drama is something I enjoy but in a "I'm making up my own version of events" kind of way, meanwhile Dramarama is something I can enjoy at face value

Was thinking about Topher blackmailing Abe again and either my brain is messed up from being sick or it would have actually been funny if the episode was Topher going super over board to stop Abe from asking Joan out because he thought Joan was going to reject Abe. Then have Abe ask Joan out anyways and gets brutally turned down (or have Joan come up to him at the party and make a big deal about how she wants nothing to do with dating for a while and she's glad to have such a good platonic friend) Then have Topher going off about how he wouldn't have had to go so far if Abe just listened to him in the first place

To everyone wanting censorship on AO3: Wattpad fucked me up more

cw: mentioning a bunch of sentivie topics, not going into details about any of them

I think I can, in some ways, be considered someone who grew up on the internet. Granted, my internet looked different than it does today and I spent most of my time on game sites made specifically for kids, but I also spent a lot of nights on Wattpad.

Sure, I read the normal stuff that a 12 year old would. Horse girl stories and jokes and shitty poetry and a bunch of fanfiction for media I never heard of, just because it was cute.

You know what I also read? BDSM and kink. Rape and kidnapping and stockholm syndrome and incest and romanticized abusive relationships. And you know why? Because none of it was tagged.

Wattpad has censorship. Wattpad deletes stories that don't follow its guidelines and so the people writing them are trying to hide from the system by not tagging properly and not describing their stories accurately.

Sure, AO3 does not have censorship, so we can probably assume it has more of these "problematic" stories, but you know what all of them are? Tagged.

Sure, I've scrolled past some rape stories, and incest and romanticized abuse, but I have never clicked on one thinking it was something it wasn't.

The only time I read something I didn't want to on AO3 was when I forgot to filter its tag out completely and didn't see it in the tags of the fic.

Granted, I wasn't on AO3 when I was 12 years old. But even if I was, you know what AO3 has always had that Wattpad doesn't? Age rating and a disclaimer.

(To be fair, apparently Wattpad has a Mature rating now, but from what I've heard, it's not exactly reliable.)

All banning and censoring things does is force people to come up with ways to get around it. That will always happen. That is inevitable. And that does nothing to protect the kids.

I know that, because I was one of those kids.

Thinking about how Abe kind of sucks as a friend

Basically over arching Abe doesn't actually pay attention to the substance of the people he calls his friends. He decides one defining trait about them then straight up refuses to believe anything that doesn't fit with in that (to the point of trying to force them to not do things they want or to do things they don't want)

I've been thinking about Frida's charter a lot since S3E8 and I thought the best way for me to think of her character is in comparison to her fellow second gen cast members:

So basically, - Topher feels judged at all times so he think it's only fair to hold others to the standards he thinks he's being held to, he also does a lot of projecting - Harriet acts like she's invested in people's morality but actually doesn't care (she might comment on how someone shouldn't litter but then forget the interaction within an hour) - Frida thinks she's better then everyone else but she acts super supportive (because she actually doesn't expect anything out of them - she not going to be disappointed since she thought the person was going to fail regardless) - Confucius is so messed up from the internet and his rich family he doesn't have a moral compass so he can get along with most anyone if they don't mind getting ignored or forgotten about for long periods of time

My favorite thing to do when writing clone high fanfiction is to pick random head canons for the characters despite having a sloid set of head canons that I actually have. I just feel it's more fun to play around with them though

For example: I have Topher knowing how to play guitar in my Wonderwall fic but my actual head canon is that Topher has no interest in guitar and never even tried to learn

My problem with season 3 telling us Confucius is buff is why the hell was he catfishing Harriet in season 2?

Like you're telling me that Confucius was worried Harriet wasn't going to like him because he used fake and photoshopped pictures of some random buff guy AND that he was insecure about Harriet cheating on/leaving him for a more manly guy when he was ripped the entire time?? Like he was aware that Harriet had a thing for guys like that from the start and he actively hid that he was while acting insecure like he isn't? If the writers weren't just doing a "got you"/"f you" moment on Harriet then it could have been an interesting plot point where Confucius could be aware that he looks that way because of some health issues/unhealthy habits and doesn't want other people seeing because he knows he'll be complimented for something that is causing him a lot of stress and pain or he has body dysmorphia to the point that he literally can't tell what he actually looks like and won't believe what anyone else says But after the reveal he starts showing off to other classmates with no signs of distress, more like a character who wore glasses finding out everyone thinks their hot without them and getting contacts then a guy who actively covered his body as much as possible in front of everyone for some unexplained reason

Okay after watching season 3 I have a new Abe headcanon

He's lithosexual (only feels sexual attraction to people who aren't sexually attracted to him)

He only wanted to be with Cleo when she wasn't actually going to sleep with him, he couldn't go through with it when she wanted him at prom (season 1)

He becomes obsessed with Joan when she isn't available/seems uninterested in him (season 2)

He was practically falling all over himself for JFK until JFK started to show interest back (season 3)

He only wanted to sleep with Joan after Bloody Marry was sent back to the mirror dimension because she didn't want to actually sleep with him (season 3 specifically episode 7)

Basically he's hung up on losing his virginity because: A. social pressure making him feel inadequate B. the overt sexual pressure his family puts on him (from his foster dad telling him he had to sleep with Cleo to his entire extended family shaming his virgin uncle who died) and C. the personal frustration that comes with feeling like you can't have a proper relationship because of the sudden discomfort you feel once the person who you liked likes you back (so he thinks if he rips the band-aid off it'll just work out)
