It’s hard to believe he ever thought Nancy was the one.

It’s funnier when he looks back on it, though now that entire relationship feels like a bitter memory. But it’s funny because it becomes so blindingly obvious, looking back, how little Nancy did for him.

The duck of her head to avoid his kiss in the hallway, the way she never seemed to kiss him first or even the way she used to break their hands apart at the first chance, even when just walking down the hallway.

He used to dial down the fact she never called him to the fact ‘girls never chased boys’. That she never seemed to say ‘yes’ to his dates, only sure; Steve tried to ignore how sure seemed so careless, an offhand comment instead of an answer.

Yes, it’s hard to believe he ever thought she was the one when you were such a stark contrast.
