Bleeding Aspens

These aspens are dealing with some deep wounds. Winter may be over, but the hardships of the snow and cold are revealed in the thaw. Not all will spring back to life. Not all will bud out green again.

Aspens usually do not have red sap except when infected with disease. I do not know what ails these trees but it is causing them to literally bleed!

I feel them.

At the edge of my forest, the blue bonnets thrive. They only bloom for a few weeks in early spring, but while out they paint the landscape with a vibrant energy.

I stand and stare upward. This picture is completely unedited, and the sky is doing exactly what it did in real life- shifting its blends of blue around the aspen's starch white.

Can you feel that crisp air? Can you smell the hint of melting snow mixed with evergreen pine?

Sunsets of winter.

Each day I think the morning will bring spring, but the land is in no hurry. Drop by drop, the snow melts away. The cold, white blanket edging off to allow the busy season in. Almost here- but not quite yet. It lingers behind the forest's winter yawn.
