another consideration for how the game industries layoffs are going to absolutely destroy games:

talented game industry workers are going to leave the industry en masse. Like. Many wonderful and talented people will find non-industry jobs, and yaknow, get paid way better with way less stress. And they're not going to come back. Why should they? theres no reason for them too, and there's no jobs to take them back.

I have so many thoughts about this but the layoffs are the shitty CEOs shooting themselves in the foot for a single quarterly profit uptick. The people making these decisions do not give a single fuck about game quality, as long there's profits. We are going to lose so many possible good games because the actual creators are being removed.

(Disclaimer: I am in the industry as a designer and my own company had devastating layoffs. I am also extraordinarily underpaid)

five hundred and thirty people laid off from riot. We aren't even one month into 2024.

there is no security in the work within game development. My dad would tell me 'just work hard, be essential and earn your place' but that isn't how it is anymore. You could be the best, most amazing artist, as so many of my friends who were laid off were, and it doesn't matter. They will get rid of you just as easily. I don't even know what to feel anymore, but as someone who had been laid off in the past, I cannot convey how devastating it is to have your life uprooted just like that.
