Apparently in China peach wood (Along with the rest of the plant) is believed to have properties that repel evil spirits, a little similar to silver in European legends or iron for both European fae and West Asian/Middle eastern Jinn. Taoists sometimes keep swords made of peach wood because of this. This made me realize something. If you took a peach wood stick, and attached studs to it of both silver and iron you'd end up with a club or staff (or mace, flail etc.) that would have the weaknesses of many kinds of supernatural creatures while still retaining effectiveness as a normal weapon (peach is a hardwood and silver's poor edge retention doesn't matter for studs). You could even keep adding new stud materials to get something ridiculous that affects over 120 catalogued folkloric monsters. Since you just need a few little studs you could even get some really expensive materials like meteoric iron (a thumb tip sized meteorite can still cost like 10-20 bucks I think). I could somewhat feasibly make a weapon that affects every monster ever thought to walk the earth, from vampires and werewolves to jinn and jiangshi and even mankind.

Option popped up with Varric's shaving mirror that I didn't have last time (because my mage guy had scar options) and may have had with my Warden gal but didn't pick: a sad one with the "Nice story, but that's not me" paraphrase.
Rook: *imitating Varric, which is always really cute* Take a long hard look in it, kid. It'll always show the face of a hero who can get it done. Rook: Varric tells such great stories.

#springy plays Veilguard#Veilguard spoilers#Solona “Rook” de Riva#so that's interesting!#(my mage guy going ':D my scars look good! they add character. and you should see the other guy' at this point is still hilarious)#I'll have to fiddle with options on my Warden elf gal replay because the vallaslin option is unfortunately Not Good

Amused by the "we're not killers" option with the mayor still appearing for a Crow Rook.
(The reasoning there is roughly "we don't kill people by abandoning them to die from blight/be eaten by wolves," which is true, but).
Got some Neve approval (yay!) for going with my usual save-the-mayor option, which I'm doing mostly because the leave-him alternative was horrifying. Had to ponder Solona's thought process but landed on the he's-not-our-real-enemy option.
(The he's-greedy option involves Rook saying the guy "doesn't deserve to die" and....I don't know if whether people deserve to die or not is really something Solona thinks about much).
#springy plays Veilguard#Veilguard spoilers#Solona “Rook” de Riva#come onnnnnn faction dialogue options#on my last two runs I'd run into some faction-specific bits by now but none yet for my Crow gal so far

So – on the one hand: yes, this is absolutely serious. A Blight is an apocalypse, and I don't want to downplay how horrifying the arrival of an Archdemon is.
But.
Specifically, in context, Ghilan'nain screeching at the Grey Wardens that she has brought Blight and an Archdemon is pretty funny. Yes, they know. They could probably sense that thing 20 miles away. And they are, in fact, Thedas's foremost Archdemon-killing specialists. They have five notches on their collective belts so far.
She brought her big supervillain speech to the one group of people who are likely to respond by sighing and going "Well, back to work I guess."

They're so fun. :D
Neve taking Rook along on a walk/to share her usual rock-throwing spot is always fabulous.
Neve: I'd look over my notes, but I've got them by heart. I just need to clear my head. Rook: Neve Gallus without her mind racing. I'd hardly know you. Neve: Aren't you clever? Rook: :) Rook: So, what are you thinking?

I really like that the companions in Veilguard have useful things to say in combat. I mean, I absolutely love the shouts of praise, appreciation, and worry for Rook, and also the companions hyping each other up, of course. They're delightful and I enjoy them very much. But now, I'm specifically talking about the companions letting you know that their cooldown is over (e.g. Lucanis' "Just say the word!") or that they've primed an enemy for detonation (e.g. Taash's "Loosened the lid for you!"). I'm talking about how they shout "Behind you!" when an enemy is creeping up on you from behind. (Saved me from a close encounter with an explosive darkspawn last time I played.) This is about them letting you know that an enemy is set up for a finisher ("End it now!"). And about how they yell at you to get to safety when you're standing in an area soon to be affected by enemy AOE, and how they warn you about ranged enemies. How they express worry and shout at you to mind your health when it's getting low, in case you haven't noticed. ("Rook is hurt!" / "Rook needs us!" / "Hold on, Rook!" 💕) Of course, it's also nice that Rook thanks them and praises them for helping out with their abilities. Each of the characters has their own unique way to do this and they have multiple lines for each of these situations. Not only is it wonderful because the group truly feels like a bunch of people that care about and look out for one another, that cheer for one another in combat. Not only is it cool to see how the combat shouts change and expand depending on the relationships of the companions with each other and Rook. Not only is it all really fun and enjoyable and makes things feel lively. But it is also pretty useful for navigating combat situations. An excellent feature.

Useless Veilguard fact of the day: Day 89
It's likely common knowledge that an Antivan Crow Rook will comment on someone eavesdropping on them, Lucanis and Illario during the Coffee with the Crows quest. However, a Shadow Dragon Rook will also show awareness of potential spies.
[If Rook is an Antivan Crow] Rook: So... have we done enough "three Crows in a coffee shop chatting about nothing" to bore the spies? Illario: Just about. The most persistent one gave up when Lucanis started getting all romantic about roasts. Lucanis: It's a very good roast.
[if Rook is a Shadow Dragon] Rook: Nobody's listening. Should we get to business? Lucanis: There's still the one at table three. Illario: She just left to follow the waitress.
[if Rook belongs to any other faction] Rook: So... is there a reason we're not talking about Illario's information, or what? Lucanis: We're still being spied on. Illario: No, the last one just left. Couldn't take your coffee talk.
Check out the tag for more useless facts: #useless davg fact of the day!

Still waiting on something to click for Solona (it'll happen, probably once I start getting Crow options, and I've already gotten some good bits from the first Lighthouse convos) but this was fun.

Strife is being aggravating and Harding did not say Strife and Irelin were her friends, so being friendly in response is not required!

:D

:( Aw, Neve.

XD She's not wrong.
I'm curious to see how the conversation with the First Warden will go because she will not have the moral high ground there. My Warden gal and Shadow Dragon mage guy could argue right back at him but. uh. she's not really gonna have a comeback for the inevitable and true "you're an assassin and kill people for money" remarks.

i find it v cute when rpgs offer me, someone whose sole strategy is “attacking enemies,” status changing effects. “this lowers your enemy’s speed” you know what else would lower their speed? being dead, from my fists

Don't love the warrior two-handed weapon so far since it's slow, but it'll probably get used to it.
I was poking around the skill tree and noticed an ability to deflect projectiles with the shield! :D I've played a lot of Zelda so I've been training for that.
There are definitely some cool abilities in there but I'm currently making a beeline for the passive ones related to rage generation so she can actually do abilities more often.
Still debating on what specialization to pick for Solona since none of them are Crow ones, but probably going to go with the Grey Warden Champion one since that makes the most sense (she and Davrin are gonna be competitive buddies).
