so aaron married john because he hates robert, he wants to punish robert, he hates himself for loving robert, he wants to punish himself for loving robert, he needs to be a good person, he needs to prove to himself that he’s a good person, he’s back to being terrified of how much he loves robert cause if he chooses robert he gives him the chance to hurt him again, he loves john because it frees him of that risk, he loves john because it’s safe, he loves john because he should love john, he’s terrified of the person robert can turn him into, he’s terrified of the person robert will turn him into, cause if he chooses robert he would be hurting people again, he would be hurting himself again, yet all of this makes him want to hurt himself, makes him need to hurt himself, so really he should choose robert, but he ultimately chooses john because choosing john somehow hurts even more

some little robron moments for u to think about on this day:

that time robert dressed up in a three piece suit for aaron’s birthday and created a mini-vegas in the pub back room to surprise him

that time robert wanted to invest in aaron’s scrapyard and aaron didn’t want to take the money because he didn’t want to fail and have robert call things off (so robert gave him the flirtiest look of all time and was like eh it’s just ten grand)

tbh that time when robert sunk ten grand into aaron’s business after boning him for literally just a few weeks, just because he didn’t want to stop

that time robert stole every loaf of bread in the village and filled the old barn they used to secretly bang in with it in order to propose and aaron walked in and was like “it smells”

that time robert had a christmas premonition that involved him running around the village desparately looking for aaron - and when he found him, aaron descended down the stairs in a suit looking for all the world like the main love character in a fucking romcom, dreamy and beautiful and basically five seconds away from walking in literal slow mo while sixpence none the richer plays

that time they got trapped in a car underwater and aaron was stuck and robert, instead of swimming to freedom, gave his literal last breath to aaron and decided to either get him out or die trying

that time robert got arrested so aaron literally cancelled christmas. literally just started taking down the christmas tree.

that time when they were broken up and aaron saw ONE BLUE SLEEPING PILL in robert’s drawer, flipped the fuck out and ran around to robert and then vic trying to make sure someone was keeping an eye on him because he just Knew something wasn’t right with robert, even though it wasn’t really his place to say anything. 

that time when they’d broken up and aaron legit stole robert’s watch but pretended he hadn’t

and then got the watch inscribed with both their wedding dates, as a wedding gift for robert

that time when aaron was in prison and robert legit just slept on the sofa under his sad bisexual butterfly blanket because he hated sleeping without aaron

that t i m e the night before their wedding where robert just full on CREPT ACROSS THE VILLAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT because they’d already agreed that they didn’t want to actually spend the night apart and then they BONED LIKE RABBITS AND THEN ROBERT CREPT OUT EARLY THE NEXT MORNING BEFORE ANYONE SAW HIM EVEN THOUGH LITERALLY EVERYONE KNEW HE WAS THERE

that time when they were having an affair and robert conned the whites into going away, invited aaron round and they spent days on end spending time together, watching dumb movies, eating junk food, acting like they were in a real relationship and they both looked… genuinely disgustingly happy

that time they met and immediately started low-key flirting over the fact that aaron was an accessory to stealing robert’s literal car, robert blackmailed him into faking a burglary and then tried to pay him off, aaron got real fucking mad, shoved rob into a wall and gave him a boner probably, aaron casually mentioned he was gay and robert immediately faked a breakdown by turning off his car, called aaron over to a layby and pounced on him

The most human thing a character can do is contradict themselves.

The cynic who still carries a childhood stuffed animal.

The liar who craves honesty.

The overthinker who makes reckless decisions.

The heartbreaker who believes in soulmates.

The pacifist who holds lifelong grudges.

The thrill-seeker who's terrified of commitment.

People aren’t consistent. Your characters shouldn’t be either.

It's one of the last few things we can have as a society that's free. You can engage, for free. People give you things (art, stories, etc), for free.

Don't buy into the consummerism just because it's everywhere else.

You don't have to consume everything you interact with. You don't have to use things, just because they exist.

You're allowed (still, for now), to have things that are enjoyable for free.

Do you realise how insane the world is? We don't have many places where we can just be, for free anymore, but ao3 is. Did you notice we don't have ads in ao3? We don't have pop ups? Where ELSE do we not have that?

Where else can you just go and not have to wait for a commercial to be over or for ads to be on the sidelines?

I don't think the younger people understand, but the whole of internet used to be like this. YouTubers would do Youtube for free, just because. You couldn't monetise your internet presence before.

Ao3 is like a little preserved corner of the internet where the old internet used to be, and it's being attacked by people who do not understand that free things are allowed to exist without judgment.

Please don't ruin this for us.

so whats the story with these emmerdale guys? and hypothetically if someone wanted to get into them where would they start?

i am so glad you asked!! this turned into a whole ass primer, but you did ask!!

the good news is that the emmerdale guys (aaron dingle and robert sudgen) share a truly epic love story that spans four years, three redemption arcs, a lot of character development, and a found family at the end. the BAD news is that there is umm a lot of stuff to wade through if you want the full experience.

emmerdale is a british soap, which if you’re not familiar with the format means that it airs five days a week all year long. tbh it’s an entirely different medium than television - there are no seasons, no hiatuses, no finales, just episode after episode every day, like a weird parallel universe we get a window into! it also has been airing since the 60s, and some of the characters have been on the show for 20+ years, which means that there is a lot of backstory and history and context that you simply will not and probably do not need to understand. you have to be ready for some very wild plotty stuff and a lot of melodrama. also people are allowed to be ugly and have bad hair and everyone works a blue collar job and knows everyone else’s business and spends all their time in the village pub. embrace the medium!

aaron and roberts story does have some of that over the top plot and melodrama, but it also has some genuinely affecting emotional depth, especially from 2016-now. neither of them start out as good people, largely due to the extreme trauma of their respective childhoods. aaron takes out his self esteem issues on himself, robert takes out his self esteem issues on other people. this means that at first, things are umm pretty toxic and bad. robert is cheating on his fiancee! the writers take a couple things to the absolute extreme! but pretty much anyone can be forgiven for anything in soap land, so we get some very satisfying redemption arcs out of it. i will not spoil the rest unless someone asks me to, but the founding tenets of their eventual relationship:

robert would do literally anything for aaron, after spending his whole life until he met him only looking out for himself

aaron never stops loving robert, even when every other person in the whole village hates him

robert is always the first person to notice when aaron is struggling, and he always tries his very hardest to help him (usually in deeply misguided fucked up ways <3) 

both of them but especially aaron have a lot of physical and emotional scars, and there is a scene where robert runs his fingers over aaron’s scars while aaron is lying in a hospital bed and tells him that he will love him forever

danny miller (aaron) can cry on cue. and he does. a lot!

if you’re intrigued, do not try to go watch the whole show! there are thousands of episodes and you will be fully lost. luckily, people have uploaded their storylines to youtube to make it easy for us.

both characters come from important emmerdale families, which means that they’ve been on the show for ages, but aaron and robert have existed in their current iterations with their current actors since 2009 and 2014 respectively. this means you have a few options for entry points:

Ngl i stopped watching when Ryan left so all of this is news to me 😭

I just want someone to point out to Robert that setting Aaron free to live his life really hasn’t worked out very well for him.

- he dated a guy he used to bully….a really boring guy

- said boyfriend got murdered by the local serial killer

- he moved to Italy, got a new boyfriend only to come back for a visit and watch his sister die by caravan because his mum was cheating on his surrogate dad

- he got sent away due to Chas not wanting said affair to come out

- Italian Marco was not good grief support and dumped him

- he got mixed up with the Italian mafia somehow

- he found out he has the breast cancer gene

- and now he’s about to marry the next likely local serial killer who also happens to be Robert’s long lost gay half brother because apparently Robert ruined him for life and now just the name Sugden is enough to make him want to say I do.

Like…Robert…buddy…he would have been way better off being tied to you in prison for 14 years…
