It’s disturbing to witness SO many ppl fantasizing about a bunch of white characters brutally beating and threatening an indigenous boy and acting self righteous when other people are upset. A white woman wrote a (16 year old) native character as sexually violent towards a white girl, a super old super racist trope and the most common reaction is literally violence to that character, done by noble honorable white people, the fucking Confederate soldier included, people are really just absorbing the racism.
Jacob didn’t choose to sexually assault Bella, Stephanie Meyer, a grown white women chose to make her teenage indigenous character sexually assault her white protagonist in order to villainize him in the eyes of the reader, she did it so people would hate this brown character, think he was bad, and think he deserved to be treated badly, and it seems like it worked based on so much of what ppl post on here. This is so awful because presenting brown and black men as dangerous, violent, and animalistic, specifically as sexual threats to white women, has been used in art for years to spread racist beliefs(ex. Birth of a Nation) and has been done in real life in order to justify violence and murder towards real people of color throughout history in every part of the world. The idea that all Native American men wanted to rape white women was spread in the 1800s in order to stir fear and hatred and justify genocide and forced relocation. Meyer’s characterization of Jacob reflects those same beliefs. It’s terrifying to see people my age taking that at face value, accepting that the Native American teenager is sexually violent, is only interested in sleeping with the white girl, is deep down not a good person, without questioning it, without being critical of why this white Mormon author wrote this brown boy this way. Especially when at the same time, the white characters, Confederate included, are presented as good and noble protectors of the white girl’s honor through violence! This attitude that brown men are dangerous to white women, and need to be punished violently by noble whites has led to thousands of innocent people being killed. It’s a very old kind of racism and the consequences are real for people, absorb that information, use your brain, grow as a person.

(TW: discusses racism, mostly rude asks when people are calling it out.)
I have thoughts
A lot of mutuals or people I follow have been getting asks or straight up rude fucking messages basically boiling down to “if you discuss the issues you turn people away” or “it’s just fantasy it’s not that deep” or accusing people of getting too offended (which is funny because they’re LITERALLY getting offended over others taking issue with blatant racism but that’s another conversation), which is fucking bullshit. I’m not gonna argue about racism being in twilight because:
It is. You can’t find an argument supporting that there’s none and I won’t waste my time
If you’re part of this fandom and somehow think there isn’t after all this time and al this discussion after sixteen years, I don’t know how else to convince you
But what gets me is that it’s like people completely forget what high school English and History classes teach you which is to analyse and think critically about the media you consume. The whole fucking point is for you to make your own decisions about what’s in front of you instead of taking it at face value! And it’s not just about academics! You’re taught to do that with the news, the internet, and the things politicians say and make statements over.
And all you ever hear about politics is not to believe everything you read or hear! You’re taught that everyone and everything has an implicit bias. And it does. No author, no person, can really be truly objective. There is ALWAYS something to be learned when analysing and reading between the lines. (Smeyer is super open about it though, but you get the picture.)
So why in the world do you think that there’s no point in thinking critically about twilight? Or that it means that somehow that means someone hates it? (If anything it usually means they actually care about it a lot) For fucks sake people have been dissecting and overanalysing Shakespeare for centuries! Everyone I know had to read John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men in high school and no shade to anyone who loves it but it’s an objectively bad and problematic book, as it basically every piece of “classic” literature. But we still talk about it, teach it, discuss it. Because doing so is important. The most important thing we do with literature and media. There are entire conventions, fandoms, tv shows, podcasts, etc about Harry Potter MCU, DC, Star Trek and Star Wars where people take increible deep dives into these things and talk about the issues present in them, but you don’t see nearly as many people in those fandoms crying about how people who call out the problematic parts are “ruining” things, and if you do it’s never the most prevalent issue either. So WHY is this different?
You need to think critically about the media you intake and that includes the books and literature you read in your free time.

Stop reducing native issues to “they had their land taken”.
Our sisters are still murdered and missing. Our children go hungry and cold. Our elders can’t afford health care. Our parents suffer from untreated mental illness and have addictions because they self medicate.
And thats not even on the reservations. Thats just in farming communities of the Lumbee. And we are doing well by comparison to other groups.
Stop reducing us to stolen land and erasing our real struggles.

Places the Cullens could have gone and their corresponding total hours of sunshine per year, according to The Cloudiest Cities in the World
Torshavn, Faroe Islands - 840
Chongqing, China - 1,054
Sao Joaquim, Brazil - 1,065
Dikson, Russia - 1,164
Malabo, Equatorial Guinea - 1,176
Lima, Peru - 1,230
Reykjavik, Iceland - 1,236
Usuaia, Argentina - 1,281
Taipei, Taiwan - 1,405
Edinburgh, United Kingdom - 1,427
Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Saint-Pierre - 1,427
Dublin, Ireland - 1,453
Sapporo, Japan - 1,466
Copenhagen, Denmark - 1,539
Pointe-Noire, Congo - 1,574
Places the Cullens went instead, knowing there was a nearby reservation who not only knew of their true nature and were terrified of their existence but were also directly impacted by having its members (mostly underage kiddos) forced to phase into werewolves, thus putting their own lives on hold just so the Cullens can carry on their human charade
Forks, Washington - this shit doesn’t even make the top 15 so don’t @ me carlisle

The Indigenous citizens out there helped flip battleground states, like AZ and WI, and deserve so much respect for turning out at polls across the country. It’s awesome to see one of them out there dancing after the defeat that they were a critical part of.

Defend minority languages.
Defend “economically useless” languages.
