You know this space so well. Wouldn’t it be a lovely place to stay? So well-known and comforting. Why go back? How nice, how easy, to dissolve, to hide from the rest of the world and all the people in it. Why bother, when you are so good at looking inside yourself. Like enlightenment, the self. Retreating this far inwards is like retreating just as far out, into the vast ether. So comforting. The thing that was you looks at the thing that was the old woman.

"Duh? That's what they're supposed to be. They're a bit of escapism from constantly having to work on fixing a world ruined by those before us or maybe it's been ruined this entire time, who knows. Either way they're meant as distractions. I could work on fixing the world and making a grand change all the time. But you know where that would get me? Holed up in my dorm cutting myself off from everyone around me and pulling my hair out at the roots as I find myself repeatedly stuck back where I started from. If you only focus on 'making a change' to the world and never take a break, you're going to burn out. Not everyone can just 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps' and work on through a world that's burning around them. So excuse me for needing a bit of a distraction. Shouldn't you be commenting this on your grandkids profile? Or what do they have you blocked?"

Penny is a very melancholic person. They have a fairly negative view of the world & tend to be rather pessimistic. Despite this they try to surround themselves with more hopeful people. Because a part of them does realize their outlook isn't healthy, they can't survive off pessimism and bad vibes alone. They want to be hopeful in small ways they are. But more importantly they want to fight for hope. They don't want to succumb to their own depression & ideas that the world isn't worth saving. They don't REALLY believe that. They know good people exist and good things exist and they want to fight for those things even if they feel they can't be one of those good parts of the world.

Huh.... A good day? Yeah that makes sense. They have good days and bad days with their pain too. Admittedly theirs was never as bad as Ree's. But they certainly had days where even getting out of bed wasn't worth the effort. Either way they shrug off.

"Glad to hear it. With all the shit you put up with you need some good days."

They ruffle Ree's hair as they say that and finally lower the phone to where Ree can see it.

"Hhhhmmm.... Alright. But don't tell her I showed you, got it? This is a huge invasion of privacy. See though? Rooting for you since one of your first interviews. How's it feel to have your own stan?"

“Since the — no way! That was almost two years before I met her! You’re fibbing!!”

They’re still giggling, though, as they pull away from Penny. At the mention of standing, they give a shrug, scratching at their cheek —

“Today’s… a good day? I get a couple good days every week. I can’t rely on em, but today’s good. Besides, my wheelchair is right there.”

there’s no way in hell they can explain meeting jirachi to Penny without them accusing them of lying.

“more importantly…come on, just a peek? I wanna see what she’s said! There’s no way she was talking about me all the way back then!”

They laugh as they continue holding the phone just out of Ree's reach. Ree seems more full of energy then Penny last remembered them. Was it because they were seeing someone? Nah. It had to be something else. Changed cause of love or whatever was way too sappy and cliche.

"First time you got mentioned looks liiiikkkkeee... Back in '23 during the PWT. Seems she was all in on cheering for you then. Maybe you got a reason to start now, huh? You cool to be standing for this long without your cane or your chair by the way, especially after all that reaching?"

They’re laughing as they reach for the phone, still, fingers wiggling as they attempt to grasp it. Penny’s arms are longer than theirs, damn it.

“How long has she been writing about me? Why!! I didn’t know! I barely use social media —!!”

"I'm very glad you asked. If you'll look at this chart" Penny pulls a notebook out of their bag flipping to some specific pages. When they turn the notebook back around there's a drawing of a Perrserker with a shortened dark beard and features rather similar to their father.

"You can see here my dad would be a Perrserker. He loves Steel types so of course he should be a Steel type and also he's super hard headed just like a Perrserker's hair that forms into it's helmet. And his hair would actually form to make more of a shape like that climbing helmet he loves wearing. Plus by being more round like that it would look similar to how he likes to shave his head. His name would be SteelClaw! I also have ideas for the rest of my family..." Penny flips through a few more pages before stopping to turn the notebook around once more. Now on the page is an elegant looking Perrsian with light spirals drawn throughout the fur and golden metal bracelets on the front paws.

"Mom would be a Persian cause she always said she thought they were pretty. Plus Persian's have the red gems in their foreheads which rubys are my mom's favorite gems so, of course that'd be fitting. My mom also loves dressing up so she'd wear accessories all the time to make herself look nice. But she can't wear anything that dangles as it might get caught in the machines she's working on. Mom always warned me about that. Though actually she might not wear any jewellery when working... But her name would be RedHeart." They then flip the notebook over to show on the next page a more crudely drawn Alolan Persian with pink ears and green earrings shaped like female Pikachu tails.

"And Nia would be an Alolan Persian cause she's got a big head and thinks she's cooler then everyone. Also her name would be StinkTail." Penny then snaps their notebook shut and holds it close to themselves. "And that's all the pokemon my family would be. That's probably the cringiest thing I've done all week. If you'll excuse me I need to go hide forever now..."
