warnings: Ao’nung being annoying😭, mutual pining? kissing( just at the end tho), did not proof read!!!

ik i said id put smut in this but i’ve been so busy and i need it to be good 🙏 so i PROMISE smut next part because i made this in a rush and sorry it’s so late to post!!

Neteyam and you somehow had gotten even closer over these past days. If that was even possible considering you both knew almost everything about each other. There was sudden change in your friendship. More secret whispers only for you both to hear. More lingering touches, like you both could not take your hands of each other when you were together. Even while just standing near each other, his hand was either on your waist or holding onto your hand. You both never questioned it.

But sometimes there was still something nagging at you to know how far this was going. You both knew whatever this was wasn’t just friends.

Recently you and Kiri had been gone exploring more around the beach and reef together.

“Y/n come look at this”, Kiri called out to you. You walked over and went to lay down on your stomach as she was and looked at the mysterious hole in the sand with her.

A few minutes in and your attention was caught by hearing voices above you. “Look it’s the freaks”.

“Go away Ao’nung”, you said rolling your eyes. Getting up and grabbing Kiri to walk away from Ao’nung and his friends. “Awww the freaks are upset” you heard one of them laugh. “I swear to-“, before you could even finish Lo’ak appeared telling Ao’nung and his friends to stop. Not very long after Neteyam arrived too, making it clear for them to back off before they do something stupid. One minute later they all were on the ground grabbing at each others tails and punching left and right.

You and Kiri could do nothing but laugh at how silly the situation was.

When the fight was broken up and Neteyam, Lo’ak were getting scolded by Jake, you waited outside. From looking at the scene you could tell Neteyam was taking the blame as always for Lo’aks actions. You hated when he did that, you understand why but sometimes you could tell he was taking more responsibility than he could handle.

Lo’ak suddenly was walking away, “Lo’ak-“

“I have to go apologise to that Skxawng”. “What!? he started it though. Are you serious”, you couldn’t believe he had to go say sorry to that idiot.

Someone’s arm suddenly was around your shoulder, “Just go do it”.

“Neteyam this is so stupid” you said looking up at him. “Because he needs to-“, he continued while bringing you closer to him “now go and do it and come back straight away”. “Fine whatever”, Lo’ak groaned and left to go apologise.

You felt Neteyams hand find your own, pulling you closer to him. “Let’s go and find somewhere to hang yeah?”, he said while already starting to walk.

You both walked into the small forest, hand in hand. After walking around a bit, you saw a spot for both of you to sit down. Neteyam and you both sat against a tree, shoulders both together.

“Those idiots still did hurt you pretty bad”, you said while touching Neteyams lip that was bruised. “Yeah but they looked so much worse”.

You chuckled, “True”. Your thumb lingered on the side of his lip a bit longer than you had thought you would be. Taking your hand away quickly, Neteyam already missing the warmth on his face.

“I didn’t really expect that from Ao’nung though? it’s so weird”, you said while shifting to lay your head on Neteyams shoulder. You really thought that Ao’nung would at least of been kind to you and especially Kiri, you were so sure he had something for her with the way he was always lingering around her and looking at her constantly!!

“Really? He’s always been a bit mean I think”, Neteyam moving to lay his head on yours. “Hmmm yeah he was always a bit interesting towards us”. He hummed in agreement. You grabbed Neteyams hand and started mindlessly playing with his fingers.

You both sat there in a comfortable silence while you held onto his hand. Feeling Neteyams head shift so he could look at you. The sunlight hitting the side of your face perfectly, and strands of your hair lightly covering your cheek while you lay on Neteyams shoulder. You looked perfect to him. He looked down to see you comparing your hand size to his, he felt his face heat up from that for some reason.

“You’re really pretty y/n”, he said in a whisper. You didn’t even know if you heard him right, “what?”. You didn’t expect Neteyam to say that so randomly.

“Oh I mean like you know- uh-“, Neteyam had never stuttered this badly before. He was trying to get the words together before embarrassing himself further. You turned to face him. “Neteyam”, using your hand to place his on your knee. “Do you like me?”, you asked boldly. You didn’t even expect yourself to say those words out loud to be honest, but you also needed to know.

Thinking about all the times Lo’ak and kiri and even Tuk sometimes would tease Neteyam and you always being together and being secretly in love with each other and all those times neither you or Neteyam said anything to deny any of it, just laughing it off. The times where he would get protective of you when he saw you talking to other men, asking you, “why were you talking to him?” and “is he your friend now?”. How close you both always were, like literally. You both always being near each other or needing to always have some sort of touch between you two either his hand in yours or you leaning next to him.

“WHAT”, Neteyam said with his eyes wide. “Do you like me or no? I just need to know Neteyam because-“.

“Y/n sorry that just caught me off guard”, cut you off quickly. Grabbing both your hands he pulling them onto his lap, “I do like you y/n of course I do”.

“Yeah but I mean like more than a friend”,

“Yes as more than a friend my love”, the nick name catching you by surprise.

“Sooo do you like me too? because this would be awkward if you didn’t-“, you cut of Neteyam by smashing your lips onto his. He kissed you back eagerly.

summary: you convince your best friend neteyam to let you come with him and his family when they leave but you can’t help but let your feelings slowly give way

warnings: just fluff tbh?? lmk if i missed anything (will def too smut in p2!!!)

this is my first time every writing anything so sorry if it’s bad bruh 😭😭

“But why can’t i come?” your voice wavering a little finally, after yelling for the past 5 minutes. “Because they are chasing my family only, not you”, Neteyam started to visibly get tense. He has never gotten into an argument this big with his best friend. “I am also your family am I not? you can’t leave me here alone”, tears started to build up in your eyes.

“You won’t be safe if you come with us. I need you to be here so I know your safe y/n”, Neteyam took some steps towards you and grabbed your hands bringing them close to his chest. “Please just try understand” he looked down at you, his eyes were searching yours for any sign of you giving in.

As much as you understood his intentions you were not going to let him be out by himself out there, you love him to much to not have him in your life without you to help him (you couldn’t tell him that though).

“I am coming with you even if you don’t like it”, you said looking at him with a serious expression on your face. He paused whatever he was thinking of saying back to convince you to stay. Then with hesitation finally Neteyam sighed and opened his mouth, “fine…but-”. Before he could even finish his sentence your face lit up immediately and you basically jumped onto Neteyam with your arms around his neck while laughing happily.

Taken aback but then quickly Neteyam chucked while snaking his arms around your waist, but when he tried to stabilise you both he suddenly tripped on his own feet and fell onto his back with a loud thud, with you were still clinging to him. When you both realised you were both on the floor, you looked at each-other for a moment and both of you started laughing like crazy people. It felt like you and Neteyam were both 10 again.

“Oww that actually hurt, my back is sore” he hissed in pain while letting out a little ‘ouch’. “Aww so sad” you said teasingly while he glared at you for teasing him while he was in pain.

Suddenly you became aware of the position you were in, in all the giggling and laughing you had not noticed you were lying on top of Neteyam. Arms still around his neck and his arms still around your waist holding you closely. Neteyam must’ve realised it too when he saw your slightly widened eyes trained down at his hands around you. And in a blink you were facing him, his eyes were looking into yours too. He looked really good like this with his braids a bit messy from the fall and him looking calm at you like this.

Obviously you had a crush on Neteyam. You met him when you were 8, your parents both passing away from the sky people, Netiryi finding you and bringing you back to the clan and basically always keeping an eye out for you but you were still independent but having a close relationship with the Sullys especially Neteyam. you adored him but never did anything to be more than friends, he was future Olo'eyktan so you never thought there was point in even trying. And surely he’s only ever seen you as his best friend.

“We should get packed” you said breaking the silent moment between you two and pushing away and standing up. Neteyam didn’t even register your words til you were already standing, “oh yeah right i’ll see you at dinner” he replied sheepishly. You waved goodbye and went back your tent to pack.

At dinner you continued talking to Neteyam as if nothing had happened from your previous encounter and he did the same. But you still had the lingering thought about what had happened and the feeling of how his eyes felt on you. He also had the same thoughts.

The next day when you had left the forest, you felt so much of sadness leaving your home but you tried you best to be strong while riding away with the Sullys on your ikran. Finally landing after the long journey, getting off your ikran and onto the sand. It was a new feeling.

The Metkayina people surrounded us, watching us intently. The tension between Jake trying to explain our presence to Tonowari and Ronal was something. But at the end Tonowari accepted us in with the Metkayina. He introduced us to his eldest son, Ao'nung and his daughter Tsireya who were going to give us lessons even though Ao’nung made it clear he didn’t want to with his immediate objection to it.

You nudged Lo’ak when you caught him staring at Tsireya, he gave you a look while you chuckled. Neteyam also bit back a laugh.

Getting settled in was easy, you could still tell Kiri was still not very happy about this. Kiri and you always got along well and you always found it nice how easy it was to talk to her. “You ok?”, you asked while putting your hand on Kiris shoulder giving it a little squeeze. “Yeah i’m just getting used to this I’ll be fine”, she said with a little smile. “Don’t worry I’m you’ll be fine” you said smiling back at her.

“How did you even convince Neteyam to let you come? he was going on about keeping you safe and whatever”, she said while giggling. You rolled your eyes, “I have my ways”, you said shrugging. “Or maybe he just likes you a lot” she said raising her eyebrow at you in a teasingly way. You quickly brushed of the thought of whatever Kiri was suggesting. There was no way Neteyam liked you like that

“Whatever but I did see Ao’nung looking at you a little to long-“ before you could even finish what you were saying Kiri was already pushing you onto the floor telling you shut up. “NO HE WASNT” “HE SOO WAS”. You both bursting out into laughter.

“We need to head down for the lessons guys!!”, Tuk said excitingly running over to me and Kiri and grabbing our hands. “Let’s goooo”, dragging us onto our feet and dragging us with her.

The rest of the day was spent in the water. You and Kiri found it quite easy to be under water while Neteyam Lo’ak and Tuk still were finding it difficult to breathe for a long period of time underwater.

“I can help you if you want”, you said to Neteyam. T Tsireya said we could have a break for a bit to regain our energy. “Here look-“, you said while shifting closer to Neteyam and than placing one hand right above his heart and another hand right under his stomach. Neteyam barely had any to react with both your hands on him like this, immediately straightening out his posture.

“You need to slow down your breathing and slow down your heart beat okay?”. All he did was nod, he didn’t know how to speak for some reason right now. “Breathe from here”, indicating where your lower hand was under his stomach area. He was breathing in and out slowly and while you paid attention to his heart beat you felt it go faster? “Your heart beat has changed”, you said looking at his face.

“Oh uh”, he stumbled on his words. You were getting worried, Neteyam has never gotten flustered like this with you. “Hey what’s up?”, you asked confused. Moving your hands on top of his knees. No answer. Moving your hand to his face and taking his chin to make him face to you, “Neteyam tell me”. “No it’s nothing trust me nothing is wrong”, he said quickly barely making eye contact.

There was a silent pause for a moment and you were about to pry more into it but then you heard the others calling you over to get back. “Let’s go”, Neteyam held out his hand for you to both get up and walk over to continue your day.

After the rest of the day was done and dinner had passed and you decided to help Netyiri clean up. “Are you finding it ok here? I know it’s a big change y/n”, Netyiri said while putting away some things in the baskets. “I’m okay it’s not so bad”, you said giving a small smile. “You will tell me if you need anything ok?”, she said reassuringly. You nodded and then headed out of the hut to find Neteyam.

To your surprise he was already outside waiting for you, hands crossed over his chest. “Let’s go look around the beach”, he said while grabbing your hand. You both walked hand in hand towards the beach and you saw a quiet space a bit further away from the huts, “there-“ you said pointing “we can go sit there”.

When you reached the spot you both sat down next to each other, just admiring the ocean. From the corner of your eye you saw Neteyam face you and look as if he wanted to say something so you turned over to look at him. “What is it?”, you said tilting your head curiously.

“Do you miss home? I know it’s only been a day but you know…”, he said a bit sadly. “Yes”, you said sighing, you turned back to look at the sea while continuing “I do miss home but we are here now we can’t go back Neteyam”. You could tell he was upset so were you, you shifted to grab his hand in yours and bring it to your lap.

“We have each other we will be ok”, you said trying to cheer him up a little. He looked at both of your hands together and smiled to himself giving your hand a tight squeeze. “Yeah you are right”. That night passed with you both walking back to the hut hand in hand.
