Riku being trans is so so important to me (lil bits of transphobia mentioned but not too bad)
I like to think both Sora and Riku knew from a very young age that they were trans and that was a part of the reason they became so close. Sora's parents loved and supported him while Riku's did not, which in turn fueled Riku's jealousy and need to be better than Sora. That's also why Riku felt so strongly that his home was a prison and didn't care much at all for leaving it and his parents behind. Part of the reason they stuck around with Maleficent for so long was because she was the first adult to acknowledge and accept his identity. But then they saw Sora once again with a loving and supportive network of people that it sent them over the edge.
In KH2, I think it would be interesting if part of the reason Riku was so resigned to staying as Ansem was gender euphoria. The body was right, but everything else was so horribly wrong. Looking into Ansem's eyes as if they were his own was the biggest problem, but as long as he kept his face covered, he could live with it. But then Sora and Kairi tell him that their appearance never mattered, that his BODY wasn't what they saw. But that his heart was what they knew and loved, and that's what gave Riku the opening to come into his own.
La Cite des Cloches in DDD. Self-explanatory on to the next one
KH3 Riku is when we finally get to see him comfortable in his own skin. He's calmer and happier, now no longer feeling this jealousy and misplaced animosity towards Sora (which was resolved in DDD with his speech about being in love but I digress). Plus, now they've got a good support network of people who love him and elder gays in the form of Aqua and Terra.
