one day, nie mingjue, lan xichen, and jin guangyao all wake up to find that, while their minds have remained the same, their bodies have been transformed into the bodies of women.
however, nothing else has changed.

in episode 36, touga and saionji went on a bike ride. with the knowledge that this took place after the nanami duel (episode 32), where she was subjected to the unblemished and violent truth of her relationship with touga and who he was as a person, the fact that saionji was wearing a yellow helmet here, a colour associated with nanami, is interesting. touga wore his signature colour, red. perhaps saionji willingly filled touga's void by being a stand-in for nanami after the siblings' fallout.
from episode 34 onwards, we saw that these two spent more time together and, in a way, were closer than before. in that episode, touga waited for saionji so they could spar, as a preparation for touga's upcoming duel with utena. in episode 35, touga approached saionji, who was practicing alone in the dojo, and asked if he'd spar with him. later, they had a heart-to-heart conversation at the student council spot, where saionji questioned touga's beliefs. in these instances, it would seem that touga was almost desperately seeking out saionji for whatever reason he had. we know beforehand that touga fostered nanami's dependency on him over the years to feed his need for power and control over others (these manifested as the results of his sexual abuse by the kiryuu adoptive parents), at least over another person. with nanami out of the picture for good, this feedback loop is broken, and he's left alone. hence, he pursued the only other person he was close to, and the only one who'd respond in kind. saionji, on the other hand, can be said to have a soft spot for touga, with him being his only friend since childhood. despite his open disdain for touga, he'd always go back to him. in a way, he's similar to juri in this regard. their actions betray their words. but a distinct difference between them: juri tried to move on from shiori, but saionji kept coming back to touga. we could interpret his disdain as being born out of obligated care for him.
in episode 36, after the bike ride, they met up at the student council spot to discuss touga's decision on whether he'd duel utena or otherwise. then, after losing to her, they laid down on the duelling arena where touga affirmed saionji that it's not over for them and that they'd see till the very end. in episode 37, touga and saionji rode a stationary bicycle at the student council spot. later, saionji joined touga to meet up with akio in his room; together in damnation. it's like they were back to being good friends like in the old days. saionji, who urged that they should rise from their coffins, accompanied touga to be sexually assaulted by akio. if he couldn't save him, then he'd go to hell with him.
#holy SHIT op this is gold#“let’s rise from these coffins” he says while climbing into the coffin with him#revolutionary girl utena#touga kiryuu#nanami kiryuu#saionji kyouichi

not to upset anyone but i actually think Wei Wuxian was even more Jiang Cheng’s Greatest Mistake than Lan Wangji’s. Like I know the core transfer discourse tends to rotate pretty narrowly around consent and the (unwinnable and pointless) argument of Who Sacrificed More, but. In the rules of that world as I understand them from text, your body belongs to your sect. Hand, core, labor, life– all of it. Jiang Cheng’s willingness to lay down his life in Yiling to prevent Wei Wuxian’s capture was noble, loving, generous– but it was not proper for him to do because, as sect leader with no heir, his survival was more important than Wei Wuxian’s. His act of love was personal and therefore indulgent. It was not in service of Yunmeng Jiang; it was not honorable by any definition of the world he lived in or the sect he owed absolute allegiance to. Your body belongs to your sect.
Jiang Fengmian and Madam Yu got this. Wei Wuxian got this. It’s one of many, many ways he was a better Jiang than Jiang Cheng could ever be. It also weights their respective sacrifices differently. Wei Wuxian’s sacrifice of his core was brotherly, loving, and virtuous, but it was also what most of his life had geared him for. Jiang Cheng was going against not only his own survival instinct when he threw himself at the Wen soldiers in Yiling, but also against the established rules of a world he was actively fighting to get back.

Things that Jiang Cheng is better at then Wei Wuxian:
1. Fashion
2. Respecting people’s autonomy and right to make informed decisions without deciding that he knows better then the person it most effects.
3. Yelling

going insane over all the ways in which jiang cheng not only doesn’t let his justified resentment fester, but moves past it for everyone else’s sakes. and how he never gets a lick of credit for it. he accepted jin zixuan and allowed him to marry his sister even after the blatant disrespect he showed for both jiang yanli and the jiang sect all because it made jiang yanli happy and he could accept that jzx changed. despite the fact that wen ning and wei wuxian are responsible for the deaths of jin zixuan and jiang yanli (not to mention tons of other people), jiang cheng lets them be at the end of the story, even after wen ning has the audacity to chew him out for something he didn’t even KNOW happened. the wen clan massacred every person he ever loved or cared about except jyl and wwx but he still tried to stand up for those who were left at that sect conference. out of everyone he has been forced to not allow his grief or anger inform his decisions. nie huaisang and jin guangyao both get to murder people who wrong them and their loved ones, and not only does jiang cheng not get to do that, but even if he could, he would choose not to if he thought it would be better for the people he cares about.
