Before I let go Part 1
The muffled sound of music could be heard playing from the backyard. Cars were parked all outside of the house, including the street and the lawn. Kira got out of her 2024 Kia Stinger begrudgingly. She was not too fond of large gatherings. She loved her family but she found that her social battery was easily depleted. She grew up as an only child so she was always used to being by herself and keeping her own self company. Now at 27 y/o she was a certified homebody. She loved living alone. She could do what she wanted when she wanted. She also enjoyed being able to control the environment she was in. One of the reasons she hated being around people was because of the lack of control she had over the environment. Opening the door to her cousins house with a pan of banana pudding in tow, she could immediately hear the sounds of “Before I let go” by Frankie Beverly being played out by the pool. As she walked into the main living room that was cojoined to the kitchen she was immediately greeted by her older cousin, David. David was 36 y/o and was an established music producer. He worked with some of the greatest from Beyonce’, to Lady Gaga and even Mariah Carey. He lived bicoastal. He had a home in Los Angeles and Tampa. He was back in Tampa for a few weeks and wanted to throw a “welcome home bash” for himself.
“KE KEEE!!” He exclaimed
Kira playfully rolled her eyes while she surrendered to David’s embrace being mindful of the banana pudding she had made the previous night. She always made her desserts the night before so all of the flavors could set in overnight.
“Oh, I know you did not make grandma Marilyn’s famous banana pudding”
“Well you know being that I am her favorite and she only gave her recipes to me I figured it was the least I could do” she said casually while handing him the tray of banana pudding still icy cold from being in the fridge overnight. He carefully placed it on the kitchen island with Kira trailing closely behind him.
“So how has everything been. Any new Grammys?” She asked expectantly.
“well you know a brotha gots to stay on his A-game. I have a few projects coming soon to a radio near you” He said while simultaneously popping the collar of his white Versace t-shirt. One thing about David is he loved his labels.
“ That’s cool cuz. I am proud of you!. You have come such a long way.” She responded genuinely
“Thanks I appreciate that cuz”
“Alright enough chit chatting. Time to party and let loose!” He cheered
Despite Kira’s objections about coming to the party, the vibe was vibing. Drinks were flowing, music was blasting, her little cousins were running around, getting in and out the pool. She turned her attention to the poolside bar making a b-line to it as if it was the “promise land”. Kira was not a heavy drinker by any means but when she drank, she drank. She ordered her usual, a vodka cranberry with a splash of soda and then made her way through the crowd, greeting people left and right.
“ Oh FUCK!” she exclaimed.
She jumped when all of a sudden two large hands gripped her from behind picking her feet up off the paved pool deck. Immediately she knew who it was. No one else would be crazy enough to do that other than her best friend Damien. Immediately she turned around with a glare that could kill. Then she did what he always expected her to do. She gave him a healthy punch right into his left bicep.
“Okay box braids!” he yelled boisterously, noticing her hair was freshly done. She had boho braids installed. They were 20 in long so they stopped at the lower back of her 5’2 frame. Damien always teased Kira about getting braids. He felt like wearing braids all the time was lazy and should only be worn during vacations.
“Don’t be all buddy-buddy with me now. You didn’t see my missed facetime calls from this morning. I only rang you 5 times.”She said with an attitude.
“Bitch, you know I be MIA the morning after my appointments” Damien had a whole roster of men that he was dealing with on a weekly basis. Each weekend it was another dick. He referred to these meet ups as “dick appointments”.
“ I done told yo toxic ass you need to go somewhere and sit down. Ain’t nothing good in these streets. You gone fuck around and catch something uncurable.” she scolded him
Although Kira was only 1 year older than him she took on the big sister role. They met back in college at FAMU, an HBCU. He was student body president and an advisor for the student union. He had always been very politically engaged. Kira took a different route. She was the captain of the cheerleading squad an a member of a very prestigious African- American sorority. She didn’t enjoy the spotlight but it seemed as if the spotlight enjoyed her. To call her popular was an understatement. She was well liked by her peers, administrators and professors.
“Chile boo! I am here for a good time, not a long time.”
As time went on the party kept getting louder and louder. The liquor started to get everyone feeling really good and loose. Her and her friend Damien spent some time dancing it up on the pool deck. They would alternate and take turns twerking on each other. By this time all the kids were upstairs playing. A tired Kira retreated to a nearby table where she saw an open chair planted a few feet away from said table. At that table a lively game of spades was underway. The sounds of the loud smacks on the table and constant jeering and insults being thrown were all too familiar to Kira. She enjoyed watching a game of spades even though she never learned herself. This was something her cousin David would always tease her about, yet he never offered to actually teach her.
At the table she noticed a face that she had never seen before. A man slightly slouched in his chair with his forearms rested on the table with cards resting in his hand. He had what someone would call a “poker face”. His eyes were intently studying his deck of cards waiting on his turn. He seemed very relaxed, cool and collected. He did not seem fazed by the insults at all and when it was time to play his deck he said nothing. No trash talking, no cheering, no nothing. This intrigued Kira. Spades was always such a lively game that involved everyone but she guessed he just had a different style of playing. He had on all black except for his all white Air Force Ones and those things were crisp. He had a rugged yet sexy look to him. He had a neatly trimmed beard with patches of grey hair peeking out. She also noticed his silver chain and bracelet. He looked like he took care of himself she thought. He was athletic build and she could tell that he was a gym rat. His arms were adorned in what appeared to be tribal art of some sort. “I bet he smells good”. Kira thought to herself.
At once, he finally looked up locking eye contact with Kira. She immediately folded and looked away while stroking her hair trying to play it off as if it was an accident. Luckily she had a dark chocolate complexion so she could blush without it showing on her face. She felt like his dark brown eyes stared into her soul. She instantly felt naked and slightly embarrassed. Even though Kira was drop dead gorgeous she sometimes felt not pretty enough. She was self conscious about her body for one. She was very petite and even though her body was perfectly proportionate she felt like she would feel sexier with larger breasts and a larger ass. That seemed to be the trend now a days anyway. His eyes refocused to his deck cards appearing oblivious to the awkward exchange that had just occurred. She then decided to retreat inside to the bathroom to shake off the nerves.
Making her way back to the party she decided to go to the kitchen and get some dessert. It was that time of the month so she had an insatiable sweet tooth right now. She then came to an erupt stop.
There he was.
Standing in the kitchen devouring a plate of her Grandma’s banana pudding. She gave him a small awkward smile while trying to avoid contact. She grabbed a paper plate and a plastic spoon. She decided to serve herself a few scoops of the pudding.
“Kira, is that right?” He said out of the blue.
If she could disappear at once she would in that moment.
“How did you know?” She asked.
“D told me that I couldn’t leave without trying yo ‘nana pudding”. He explained
“Oh you’re friends with my cousin David?”. She asked
“Yeah that’s my homeboy. We met back in college. We were on the football team together.”
“Oh that’s dope” She said
She tried to pick up as much intel as she could from this mysterious man. She wondered what his ethnicity was. He had a deep caramel complexion. He obviously wasn’t white or black she guessed from his facial features and skin. But she was so intrigued by his tatts. They weren’t typical everyday tattoos. She could tell that they were meaningful. She wanted to ask him but she didn’t want to turn him off by being to upfront.
“You from round here” He asked. Snapping her out of her thoughts.
“I’m originally from Orlando, but I moved here for work” She said.
Kira was offered a higher paying job and she was not going to let distance stop her from getting her coins.
“Oh yeah, you a nurse right?”
She raised her eyebrows in surprise.
“Well damn how much did David tell you.”
“Enough…Not to be weird but I clocked you as soon as I saw you walking towards the bar and asked D who you were and he told me.” He replied a matter of factly
“Oh, well I hope he told you all good things.” She lightly chuckled trying to lighten up the sexual tension that was palpable between them. There was something about him. His confidence had her knees weak. He was assertive and a little cocky but not too much. His eyes were like lasers burning right through her body. She felt heat travel from her face all the way to her toes. Her feet felt like heavy blocks of concrete. She couldn’t run away if she had tried. It seemed like time had stood still for a few minutes.
“Keke!!” David yelled our emerging from the pool deck into the kitchen where the couple was currently standing.
“We bout to play “Sing or drink”. Bring yo black ass out here and play” He yelled out slurring every word. He was noticeable wasted.
She heard a noticeable chuckle come from the mysterious man. This was the most expressive she had seen his face all night. He seemed slightly amused by the short interaction between her and her cousin.
“It was nice talking to you, umm….”
“Joshua, but you can call me Jey.” He interrupted .
“Jey” She repeated with a faint smile
Disclaimer: Ya'll, not too much on me. This is my first ever fanfic! I am doing this for fun. I figured instead of just being a reader I could be a writer as well. Enjoy! Positive vibes only!
