@pscentral event 39: pride
All I ask is that when you look at me, see me. See me the way I see you, as a proud member of this department. One of the rare few that chooses to spend their lives in service of those who are hurt and those who need to be saved.

Can we talk about how Buck is from Eddie’s perspective? He’s not silly or dumb or a himbo or any of the other things I actually love about Buck but make him a less serious character.
In each FaceTime Buck is competent, smart and reassuring. He’s making dinner at the station which means multitasking and good cooking skills. He’s available when Eddie calls which is reliable. He listens and offers good advice. He’s selfless and doesn’t take the opportunity to encourage Eddie home when we know he feels like he’s missing a limb without him. I’m not sure, but I think Buck even stutters less? He’s calm and confident, more sure of his advice and obviously doubts himself less.
Buck from Eddie’s perspective is everything Buck wants to be for the people he loves. Yes, Buck and Eddie also get to be silly together and we see that in Buck’s view, but how beautiful is it that he’s also this mature and stable partner?

buck's realtor gets so pissed off by his pickiness that she sits him down on the stoop of his newest rejection and tells him to list everything that would make up his perfect house and buck of course describes eddie's house right down to the natural light and squishy corner. and the realtor goes okay so i might have a place for you it's a house but it's still in your price range because well honestly it's got a history that's made it pretty hard to sell. and buck like heaves a sigh and says i'll see it anyway because atp he just needs to find a place and maddie and chim live in a very nice murder house there's no reason he couldn't too. anyway she drives him over there but the neighbourhood is getting very familiar and suddenly they're turning onto south bedford street and for a moment buck's terrified eddie's selling his place and moving back to el paso but then the realtor is stopping outside of meth lab jim's and buck is tripping out of the car and the realtor is stammering her way through an explanation of the history until buck goes oh it's okay i know about the methlab fire my station was the one to put it out and he sees the dollar signs flashing in her eyes before he has a real look around and it's perfect really if he ignores the jim of it all. looks just like eddie's place and if he can't have eddie's place, which he can't because it was never his to begin with, surely something this close is the next best thing. so he puts in an application and gets accepted worryingly fast and tells eddie all about it and gets really shifty with the details and absolutely does not let eddie help him move in. and then he's spending his first night there eating takeout in the middle of the living room floor and it's not. it's not home. and he's realising that maybe it was never really the house at all. and of course he can't fall asleep there keeps thinking about any of jim's methlab buddies sneaking in looking for a fix and so he runs down the street and lets himself into eddie's and passes out on the couch. he'll deal with it all in the morning. he's home now.

"But he shows up for Buck every time Buck asks,"
Yes. And then he leaves. That's the problem. The show deliberately contrasted the way that Eddie and Tommy deal with conflict with Buck this season. Eddie consistently asks Buck to explain his feelings, even begs him to, so that they can have a discussion and get to the bottom of the issue. He did it in the firehouse when Buck was acting passive aggressive and he did it at his house when Buck came to reveal that he would sublet from him in 8x09. Eddie digs into conflict with Buck because he values that relationship enough to put in the work to fix it when things get tough. He doesn't bail. Even when he's thousands of miles away, he maintains seamless communication. Even when Eddie decided to move to Texas for Chris, he kept Buck informed, which he really wasn't under any obligation to do (and which went against his inclination towards secrecy).
Meanwhile, Tommy makes major decisions about their relationship without consulting Buck and then bolts when Buck asks him to explain. He did it on their first date, and he did it again when he dumped Buck in 8x06. And he did it yet again in 8x11 when Buck was (rightfully!) upset about Tommy's dismissive behavior regarding his best friend leaving. In all of those situations, Tommy could have stayed and talked through the issue with Buck and they likely could have come out the other end of the conflict in a good place. But instead, Tommy left. And, in leaving he reaffirmed for Buck that Buck is not worth staying for.
Like, it's true that Buck said some hurtful things to Tommy in 8x11. But characters who actually know Buck understand that he lashes out when hurt and confused to take some control over the situation and push people away before they can leave him. It's his first instinct, but it's typically not the behavior that wins out if the person he is talking to stands their ground and, most importantly, doesn't leave. That's why Eddie didn't let Buck's hurtful comments to Blaze push him away, but instead kept talking to him until Buck talked back. It's also why Eddie forgave Buck for knocking him over on the basketball court and sent Tommy over to let Buck know that Eddie wasn't leaving and wanted to understand how he was feeling.
Showing up for Buck isn't enough if you're just going to turn around and leave when shit gets rough. Because that's exactly what Buck expects people to do, and he will push you out that door to protect himself if you let him. But Eddie never let's him. And that's why they work.

it’s thursday and all i can think about is buck and eddie in the early hours of the morning when they don’t really have anywhere to be. buck wakes up first like he usually does and just lies there with eddie half on top of him and enjoy the quiet, slow morning and the smell of eddie’s shampoo in his nose and the steady rhythm of eddie’s heartbeat against his side. then he’s like well i gotta get up. and he even bravely tries to get up. he even successfully manage to get out from under eddie without waking him up. but the second his feet touch the ground eddie opens his eyes and groans and pats at buck’s back, still half asleep, really, but complaining up a storm without saying a single word because it’s their day off and it’s still so early and why in the world would buck leave him alone in their bed right now. and buck is like well we have stuff to do baby. shopping and cleaning and cooking. and eddie looks up at him with his big pretty brown eyes and pouts and tugs at his t-shirt and buck folds like a chair, lets eddie pull him back so he’s lying next to him again. except eddie keeps pulling and tugging until buck is lying on top of him, pressing him into the mattress like the world’s best weighted blanket. buck chuckles and rests his head on eddie’s chest and tells him that he can’t complain later about buck squashing him because this is his own doing (eddie literally never complains about that. he loves when buck presses him into mattresses, no matter how) and eddie just pats the back of his head then scratches his scalp and buck melts into him like eddie knew he would and they fall back asleep. happy thursday everyone <3
