Theo hates himself for this. For sitting with his toes in the cold sand, watching Liam’s back. The closest beach to Beacon Hills is an hour away. Its small, sand is grainy and spiky all shards of sea shells that haven’t yet gone soft. The ride here was tense, quiet with everything Theo doesn’t know how to say.

 Words like, I’m sorry, I don’t think you’re stupid, I don’t think you’re weak. I’m sorry, I’ve been miserable without you. 

Liam is stripped to his boxers and goosebumps raise under his skin as he wades, waves lapping at his calves. His shirt is sitting next to Theo, next to his shorts and shoes. His socks are tucked away neatly. Liam is so close but feels farther away than he has ever been. Theo chokes on his tongue not to call out.

The moon sparkles on the water, twilight in its early stages, stumbling as it learns how to walk across the sky. Stars are blinking into existence and the brown sand looks white here. Pure. Broken.

Here's the truth: the Doctors went to Maine. Theo was with them then. Dates line up. Directly after he made friends with cold and surface tension, after bridges became accomplices in crime, three Doctors made home in the forests of Maine. Here lies information that stares you in the face like a corpse without eyelids.

Here is also the truth: Theo has no memories of Maine. He remembers Maryland, remembers Chicago. Remembers the east coast and remembers hating it. Remembers sections of Canada and being coached in Latin and French and cultural assimilation. Remembers his first real kill in Ohio. He remembers every state surrounding Maine, but forgets the feeling of its dirt on his paws.
