"Remember, they can't stop you from smiling."
'Reservation Dogs' delivered one of the most powerful episodes of the whole series. I had to take a moment to myself after watching the "Deer Woman" episode. It was a tragic story to hear but important to know.
Indian Boarding schools has a horrific and terrible part of Native history. Almost all Native people have known someone (parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles) or they themselves who have been a victim of Indian Boarding schools. This history is never taught in schools so it's very important that shows like 'Reservation Dogs' tell these stories.
Storytelling is so important, 'Reservation Dogs' does this intricately through Native folklore and Native history. The story of 'Deer Woman' is one that has been told through generations across different tribes and learning about the origins of 'Deer Woman' in this story was heartbreaking.
This episode had me crying and reflecting. I appreciated how 'Reservation Dogs' shows the resilience of Native people, through all the atrocities that Native people have faced and continue to face, we fight back. We continue to laugh and smile because they can never take that from us!
Such a powerful, powerful episode.
