There seems to be an unwritten rule that the best tacos on any island can be found in the town’s center. Thick handmade corn tortillas with fresh, handmade meat fillings are the most popular and delicious tacos in Cozumel.

Your first destination will be Diego’s Tacos right across the road from the airport.

The fish tacos are amazing and the friendly wait staff delivers them. Everyone loves Diego’s, which is why it makes sense to take their word for it when they tell you that their fish tacos are the best in Cozumel.

West coast Baja-style, these island fish tacos are prepared full of breaded or grilled fish. They will present you with amazing salsas ranging from mild to very spicy.

The area has simple outdoor seating, which is covered with a new roof.

El Ñero 

You’ll never find better tacos than those served at El Nero. Forget about love. Tacos are the only thing you need and El Nero delivers. No fancy tablecloths, the usual cheap and insubstantial table napkins, and all the deliciousness you ever dreamed up.

There’s no better way to enjoy a plate of tacos than to sit down and eat them in Mexico City style. Most servers speak little English, but you get by. They have paper menus now that tell you what you need to know. They even have everything written on the wall menus in case your eyesight is as bad as mine.

Besides pork and beef, they have tongue (try it!) and Mexican sausage. And then delicacies we dare you to try – intestines and brain. Tacos are always cheap, but they’re also great.

Mr. Taco 

Tacos al pastor are a must-try when you’re visiting Mexico. They make these Mexican delicacies of pork that is marinated in spices and cooked over a flame. They traditionally served this dish at barbeques and on streets in Mexico, Central America, and the Middle East.

The local Mexican people could not eat lamb, but with the arrival of Lebanese immigrants, the word al pastor appeared. Later, the local shepherds (pastores) adopted this method of cooking meat on a spit out in the countryside and later they named it al pastor (shepherd style).

You can’t miss these large spits with a mountain of meat displayed in front of Mr. Taco. There are plenty of night-haunts that are open until late, so Mr. Taco is a perfect choice for that “second” dinner.

Los Nopales

A place with delicious food at a great price. This is not a fancy place, but it is authentic, clean, and has a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. This is one of our favorite places in town. They make the tacos al pastor with hand-tossed tortillas.

There are two rotisseries at the counter where the server cuts the meat for your entrée while you watch. You’ll love the great nopales tacos con queso. They cooked the nopal cactus in a traditional Mexican way, and it tastes amazing.

If you’re a local or on vacation, this cute local restaurant is a must-try.

El Pique 

This place is authentic, and families from all over come to try the recipes. This is the best chicken taco on the island of Cozumel. Hands down. You will notice the staff being helpful, and the cuisine is marvelous.

Their verde salsa is very spicy. The salsa rojo has an excellent flavor as well. They don’t open until 6 pm. The tacos al pastor here are everything tacos al pastor should be. Crispy, marinated pork, pineapple, onion, delicious salsa, and soft tortillas. Our favorite tacos also include the chorizo, and the alambre. The alambre is more expensive than the other tacos, but it makes multiple tacos in the one order.

Los Sera 

You can try so many different tacos here. They have about 10 different choices of tacos. They are all incredible – taco el pastor, tacos de bistec, and kebabs. Simply delicious and an excellent value. Los Sera has the best queso fundido on the island. They also have pizza with the same el pastor, pineapple, onions, and manchego cheese – OMG the best!

Traveling from the United States to Cozumel is a straightforward process. First, you need to purchase a plane ticket from your departure airport to Cancun International Airport (CUN), Mexico. Once you arrive, there are several options to get to Cozumel. The most popular and economical option is to take a bus to Playa del Carmen, a 75-minute drive from Cancun. In Playa del Carmen, you now need to get on a ferry to Cozumel. The ferry ride takes 45 minutes and offers stunning views of the Caribbean. If you do not want to do the “bag drag”, you can also take a direct flight from the United States to Cozumel International Airport (CZM). Once you arrive in Cozumel, you can take the shuttle or rent a car to get to your hotel or destination. When planning your vacation, remember to check the current travel advisories, travel restrictions, and entry requirements to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Transportation from Cozumel to Isla de la Pasión. 

To get to Passion island, you can arrange for pickup at your hotel or your cruise pier depending on your mode of travel. This involves taking a bus from downtown San Miguel to the bay of Isla de la Pasión where you will take a ferry to Isla Pasion. This is the quickest way to get to Passion Island in Cozumel.

You’re going to take the ferry to the island, so it may as well be the package that includes food, drinks, and access to all the water sports and activities on the island. Some of the all-inclusive trips to Passion Island include English-speaking tour guides, round-trip transportation, kids’ activities, babysitters, and an all-inclusive food and beverage service.

If you have a rental car, drive yourself to the ferry at the bay of Isla de la Pasión. The car ride is about half an hour long, and there are quite a few bumps along the way. It is your responsibility to ensure you are insured and permitted to drive this car on this road.

At the Bay, free parking is available and then you can board the small ferry across the bay for the 10-minute ride to Passion Island. The ferries cross a lagoon, not an open sea, so the water is calm. After your visit to Passion Island, you’ll get on the ferry back to Isla de la Pasión bay and drive straight back to Cozumel.

You can also book your Airbnb or Condo an extra day if you have a late flight. This costs a bit more, but you will enjoy having the extra time to relax.

Things to be aware of while renting Jeeps You need to understand that even in a Jeep if you leave the paved road surfaces you will void all of your insurance coverage for the Jeep. To take an off-road trip you need to be on a tour. There are Jeep, ATV, and buggy tours available if that is what you are looking for.

In 2020, Cozumel introduced a dedicated, two-way bicycle lane along the main coastal road. The primary avenue running through the downtown area is Melgar, which starts from the southern end of downtown and goes to the south hotel district, passing the International and Puerta Maya ports.

These bike lanes are for bicycles only. Motorized vehicles (including scooters) are not allowed in them. You also may not pass cars on the bike lanes.

It is only on this stretch of the island that we have this bike lane, but that is a very busy stretch. If you find yourself slowing down behind some vehicles in that lane, just wait it out and avoid being tempted to pass.

Please pay careful attention to where the cyclists are #1. Many people bike to work, but for those who don’t have to, it’s great to use bikes for recreation and competition in the tropics. Slow down to help everyone–including yourself! You should also look both ways when crossing the street near the bike lanes. Bicycles move fast and you do not hear them coming.

The best thing you can do when the police officer speaks to you is to let them know if you know Spanish and how much.

The current procedure seems to be that an officer will ask for your driver’s license. He’ll then communicate what you did wrong.

That was easy. Here’s where it gets tricky: deciding whether what you did warrants a fine. If it does, the procedure is they will take your driver’s license to the local police station and you will pay there.

How do you tell whether the police officer is looking for a bribe? Just my feelings, but if the officer holds onto your driver’s license while talking to you and does not write anything on his ticket pad, he wants to talk to you about something off the books.

Parking on the Island Most places you want to stop outside of the city have very few parking restrictions and you can park on the beach as long as you respect the rules.

Inside the city, there are more rules. Follow all the posted signs, and also look at the curbs. DO NOT PARK in front of those areas that have no parking signs or where the curbs are painted yellow.

The island of Cozumel is located just off the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – across the water from Playa Del Carmen and about an hour and a half from the Cancun airport. The Latitude and the Longitude of the Island of Cozumel is 20.422984 latitude and -86.922343 longitude.

1.Since the Yucatan Peninsula is part of Mexico, traveling to Cozumel is simple and economical.

2. Cozumel is the closest Caribbean island to the mainland United States and accordingly has much more direct tourist traffic from the U.S. than any other island in the Caribbean.

3. In fact, many individuals who visit Cozumel decide to remain a few days or a week instead of just a day or two because it is so simple to fly back and forth between Cozumel and the U.S.

Getting to Cozumel

The best way to get from Cancun to Cozumel is with the ADO bus from the Airport to Playa del Carmen and then take the Cozumel Ferry. This is because the bus ride is only about 1 hour long and it is a much nicer way to travel. The ferry for Cozumel runs every 60 minutes, and it is very inexpensive. You can buy your ticket at the ferry terminal.

Some notes about the ferry to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen:

1. You can take your bike on the ferry no problem for no extra charge, they will direct you to a different entrance on the ground floor so you don’t have to get up the escalator with your bike! 2. It’s the same if you have a lot of luggage or are in a wheelchair. 3. You just go under the escalator and enter from there. 4. I always sit indoors in the a/c rather than outside, but that’s because I’m not a tourist and it’s not so exciting for me anymore.

Whatever your travel plans, you should also know that airlines fly directly into Cozumel, which we recommend that you look at first. Airlines flying into Cozumel include; American Airlines, United, Southwest, Frontier, Sun Country, Air Canada, Rouge, WestJet, Volaris, and VivaAerobús.

When To Visit Cozumel

The tropical climate in Cozumel is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F) it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.

January – April

Peak season. Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person this is something to consider.

May–October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year, but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October, so monitor the forecasts and get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can expect lower rates at hotels, resorts, and tour companies during this time.

November–December

Many consider the autumn-winter months to be the best times to visit Cozumel. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings sometimes though.

What Is There to Do in Cozumel?
