Take My Chances
This is for the @stmonstercalendar June prompt “Vampire” | This is a House of Night crossover. | rating: G| WC: 1072 | CW: Temporary Character Death| pairings: pre-steddie | Title from Eye of the Tiger by Survivor | Added some notes to the end about the crossover elements. AO3 summary: Eddie’s adjusting to life at the vampyre high school when she meets transfer student Steve Harrington.
Eddie Munson's been different her whole life. Once it was clear she wouldn’t fit in, she leaned into it hard, proudly declaring herself a freak of nature. The universe seemed to agree as a week after her eighteenth birthday she was marked as a fledgling vampyre: two years after the average teen.
Even that wasn't enough apparently since she's been chosen by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx, to save the world; and to top it off, every time she stops an enemy of the Goddess, her mark gets more elaborate, the design going down her neck and arms. Now, even on a campus full of premature vampyres, she’s a freak. The only place she feels normal is here, in the stable, among the horses.
Eddie runs a brush along Persephone's back. The mare chuffs in appreciation when she scratches behind her ear. Although she doesn't have an affinity for horses like the Equestrian professor Joyce, Eddie can guess what the mare is thinking.
“Even horses like being scratched here huh?” Eddie whispers.
As dawn approaches, Eddie begins the process of cleaning up her tools. It's not like the sun will burn her or anything crazy, she's just exhausted. As she exchanges her work boots for her Reeboks, a noise from the archery field catches her attention. Quiet as a mouse, Eddie tip toes over to see the new guy practicing.
Steve Harrington
The “twins” Max and Eleven heard a rumor that Nyx gave him an affinity for fighting, though Eddie could have sworn they said it was melee combat.
She sneaks onto the field and watches him let loose arrow after arrow, missing the target stands entirely. Without her permission, a snort of disbelief rings through the arena.
“Something funny?” Steve asks raising a bitchy eyebrow.
“A little. I've just, never seen anyone do that badly before.” She holds out a hand for the bow and Steve hands it over without fuss.
Eddie notches an arrow, lines up her shot, and lets it fly, hitting the target dead center.
“Lucky shot.” Steve mumbles. With a haughty flip of her hair, Eddie splits the arrow three times, successfully hitting the bullseye four times in a row.
“You were saying?” She smiles sweetly as she hands back the bow. “I heard your affinity was for combat. Is that not true?” Steve sighs and glances away.
“It’s true but it’s hand to hand and only if my intent is to kill.” Steve murmurs. “I don't exactly go around showing that off, you know?” He shrugs. Eddie could understand that. “Is it true you have an affinity for all five of the elements?” Steve asks in return.
Eddie's just grateful he didn't ask her about being born a guy. There's been more than a few fledglings and even fully changed vampyres that made a comment on it.
“I guess Nyx saw something in me.” Eddie shrugs, what the Goddess could have seen, she has no idea.
Steve's smile fades as a wet cough escapes his lungs. The first is followed quickly by another then another, blood pours out of his mouth between coughs.
He's rejecting the change.
Eddie helps Steve lay on his back, his head resting in her lap. Running her hands through his hair, she yells into the barn for someone to get the headmistress, even though Eddie suspects she's behind this somehow.
“It would be right when I meet you that this happens.” Steve chuckles.
“What do you mean?” Eddie asks as she swallows her urge to bury her nose in the blood around them. This blood lust thing was annoying as hell.
“When they transferred me here the thing I was looking forward to the most was meeting Nyx’s chosen fledgling. But you're even prettier than I thought you'd be.” Steve admits. In a desperate attempt to make the boy’s passing easier, Eddie presses her lips to his, making sure his last sensation is gentle.
The breath leaves his body and Eddie cradles him gently until the headmistress appears.
“I'll take it from here, Eddie.” Professor Henrietta says. She scoots Eddie away into the arms of Will, one of Eddie's friends.
“You have blood on your mouth.” He whispers handing her a napkin. She gratefully wipes it off and allows herself to be led from the room, throwing one last suspicious glance at Henrietta, her eyes narrowing at the vampyre’s small smile.
A quick shower followed by some dinner, and she's laying down staring at her old roommate Chrissy's empty bed. It hadn't been that long after the girl passed that she came back with a completed red mark. Eddie closes her eyes and quietly asks Nyx to make the same thing happen to Steve.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
It's two days later that Eddie sees Steve again.
Will, Max, Eleven, and Robin form a circle around Eddie, who’s leading the school in a full moon ritual. As soon as she begins, an arrow shoots through the air. Chrissy, who’d been hiding nearby, shoves Robin out of the way but the arrow sails past Chrissy missing her by an inch.
Professor Henrietta stands with her hand on Steve's shoulder; his mark no longer blue and unfinished but, red and complete, marking him as changed. Vines sprout from the filled crescent and twist around clubs that frame the side of his face.
“You missed!” Henrietta screams as she smacks Steve.
Steve stumbles forward, breaking the circle and takes a protective stance in front of Eddie.
“I don't want to hurt them.” Steve cries.
“Steve, you're back!” Eddie exclaims. Confusion and fear rip through the crowd as two dead fledglings stand before them; very much alive with completed red marks.
“Look! Nyx’s chosen creates abominations.” Henrietta cries.
“What?!” Eddie yells. “He shot on your order!”
“Yet you are the one he protects.” Henrietta shrugs. “Get them.” Several security guards appear and surround the group, but Eddie had a feeling Henrietta would pull something like this and is prepared.
“Come on.” Eddie whispers to Steve and grabs him around the wrist. The seven fledglings disappear through a gap in the wall and head to a collection of underground tunnels that house several red mark fledglings.
Once everyone is safe, Eddie turns to Steve pulling him into her arms.
“I'm so glad you're okay.” She murmurs. “Now tell us everything!” She demands. If they're going to stop Henrietta once and for all, Eddie's going to need as much information as possible.

--------------------------------------
Some notes about the crossover elements. In the House of Night series, the Vampyre Society is Matriarchal. I wanted Eddie to be a transwoman because I feel like the Goddess Nyx would respect a person’s true gender over their assigned one and I wanted to highlight that. Even if the rest of the society didn’t, they can’t argue with the Goddess.
Henry is genderbent for the same reason, but to really highlight how much of a chosen one Eddie is, Henry is a cis woman.
Might be self explanatory but a person is marked as a fledgling and spends time becoming a vampyre and learning vampyre stuff. A fledgling has two options: change or die. If they survive, in about three to four years a person will change into a full vampyre but they can die at any time between the mark and the change.
Vampire is spelled Vampyre to match the book, sorry. This is based on a scene in the fourth book. Iykyk
I’ll probably come back to this universe at some point because I love the house of night books.

A Monster Fucker's Guide to Vampires
Level 1
Other than the fangs and pale skin, they could be easily mistaken for human. A safe, respectable, acceptable choice.
Level 2
Now these guys really get into the vampire aesthetic. Victorian/Edwardian era clothing, goblets of blood, sleeping in coffins, etc...
Level 3
A little more inhuman, a little cooler looking, a little less conventionally desirable.
Level 4
This is where true monster fuckers begin to become interested, and my personal favs. Also very furry friendly.
Level 5
A departure from classic vampire lore and myth, weird, scary, questionable fuckability depending on how brave you are.

Midsummer madness (part 2, sort of!)
Rating: E; Words; 2500ish; Summary: The full moon is pulling O!Steve into heat. It’s also pulling A!Eddie into rut… and transforming him into a werewolf. Not wanting to scare or harm his Omega, he decides to stay away until the full moon has passed. His wolfy side, however, scents an Omega in heat and makes other plans… (fyi, while there’s certain elements of monsterfucking here, Eddie is chiefly human-shaped with added fangs/hair by the time we get to it 😉) Tags: omega steve, alpha eddie, heats/rut cycles, werewolf eddie, historical-fantasy au, courting, scenting, angst, hurt/comfort, references to mpreg, sexual content, cuddling, happy ending.
Inspired by this prompt by the amazingly imaginative and talented @moonjelly69: ‘O!Steve bringing A!Eddie a basket full of herbs and other things before A!Eddie's hunt hoping (even though its not traditional) A!Eddie will accept it and bring O!Steve something back from the hunt’. Steve’s courting gifts and the lavender haze root tea were also created by @moonjelly69 and can be found here and here
For @stmonstercalendar Strawberry Moon werewolf event, and @steddiebingo prompt, ‘Saying Goodbye.’ It is set in the same fantasy/historical universe as this fic where A!Eddie rescues O!Steve from sacrifice… and follows on from this ficlet where Steve gives his offering, tho can just about be read standalone. Read all on AO3
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Prequel ficlet
By the day of the Strawberry Moon, Steve feels like he’s dying.
Yeah, the moon turns everyone loopy and a touch frisky. Even so, Omegas are not supposed to be fully in heat like this till the Alphas return from their hunt.
Unfortunately, Steve’s body doesn’t seem to know the rules.
Soon after Eddie left him, Steve collapsed into a humiliating puddle, while making soup with Argyle for the post-moon feast. Two days later, here he is, writhing with full-on heat pangs, and with no Alpha to relieve him. His nest is soaked with sweat and slick, and he’s chewed Eddie’s old tunic—his favourite comforter—to pieces. He’s perfuming like crazy, and his spring apple-blossom scent is tart as apple-cider-vinegar.
Yeah, he reeks. He’s terrified he’s gonna bring every Alpha in the land down upon him and the rest of the pack.
Under the full moon.
When they’re all werewolves.
And with only Betas, Elders, and the flimsy wooden palisade to defend the village. So, that’ll be fun. Mother Nature is a bitch, especially when she messes up.
He tries to suffer in silence, like a good little Omega. He bites his fist, trying not to wail and scare the pups, and he’s stressing his churning guts out. What if Eddie gets hurt on the hunt? What if Eddie thought Steve’s offering basket was needy and clinging? Is that why Eddie pretty much shoved it back at him and legged it? Surely not, tho' if Eddie sees Steve like this, looking such a fright… Ugh, he’ll wanna plow a nice, less disgusting Beta.
By twilight, Steve’s having a pain-drenched nightmare. He’s back on the stone slab, trussed up, helpless, and about to be sacrificed by his old pack: “Screw you!” he screams, “This is so unfair! Not my fault the dumb harvest was a shit-show!”
A blade glints in the moonlight and flashes toward his throat.
“Eddieeeeeee!” he wails, then accidentally hisses and gnashes his Omega fangs at Argyle, who’s come to comfort him and mop his brow. Steve sniffles his apology, explains about the dream, and feels more guilty than ever. Argyle’s chill as ever. He’s brought fresh straw, helps Steve sip wine spiced with healing herbs, tho’ not the best ones. The lavender haze root tea isn’t properly dried and brewed yet. Even if it was, Steve had wanted to save his precious courting gift for Eddie’s return. Argyle searched the forest for hours, and couldn’t find any other half-decent stuff, not even a juicy poppy.
Yeah, Mother Nature is being a seriously epic bitch today.
The heat cramps gather pace, and he’s so, so empty. He’s not even leaking that much anymore. He feels much like somebody is using blunt claws to continually scrape out his guts. Only Eddie can fill this void in his loins and in his heart. He screams his lungs out, screams till his throat is shredded…
…and till he’s answered by a blood curdling howl. His eyes lock with Argyle’s, who mouths, “Oh crap.”
Their terrified silence is broken by another howl. This time, it’s deafeningly loud and petrifyingly close.
Argyle jumps up, shoots outside. Steve sobs in pure anguish, flailing onto his back and totally losing his shit. Screw the evil-ass Strawberry Moon! Steve’s heat has lured an Alpha werewolf to their village. They’re all gonna die and it’s ALL HIS FAULT.
Then he notices. His pains have mysteriously faded. He inhales the coppery tang of fresh blood blended with the unmistakable oaky-smoky scent of love and safety. He really, really hopes he’s not dreaming again, or dead.
With the little strength he’s got left, he props himself up onto shaky elbows and forces his eyes wide. “Eddie?”
Something that smells like Eddie stands in the doorway. With gleaming yellow eyes and tufted, doggy ears slanted back, like he’s primed to kill. He steps into a bright shaft of moonlight and… Oooooh!
It’s not the sleek full-body fur that entrances Steve. That dick is thick as Steve’s arm, and Steve is strapping for an Omega.
“Is it gonna fit?” he squeaks, wetting his dry lips.
Eddie growls and dumps something he’d gotten slung over his shoulder onto the dirt with a thud. A poor dead doe. Offering for offering. Seems Eddie appreciated Steve’s little gifts after all, and he’s sealing the deal of their forever-bond in the most fundamental and ancient style.
“Thank you, Alpha,” he whispers, with the teeniest quirk of a grateful smile.
Eddie stalks closer, and the face is, thankfully, Eddie’s, only more beardy. Then he grins and his lips peel back to reveal inch long sabre-sharp fangs. Steve briefly panics he might’ve eaten Argyle or something, but surely not, no. This is Eddie…
…who pounces
Steve wails his most ear-piercing wail yet. Next instant, he’s pinned flat to the nest with two heavy paws clamping his shoulders, two hairy thighs squeezing his hips. Eddie’s scenting Steve, rooting around Steve’s neck as if seeking food, which is a whole new breed of terror. Eddie’s nose is wet and cold, his breath like the blast of the iron-furnace. He’s gotten those fangs poised—then grazing unbelievably gently—over Steve’s scent gland, his skittering lifeblood.
Crazily, a delicious sense of peace ripples through Steve. He’s utterly limp, neck bared for whatever, motionless save a fine, bone-deep tremor. If Eddie bites down, he’s history. He feels so cherished, so wanted. So crazily, totally Omega.
Eddie-wolf swipes a decidedly rough tongue up Steve’s throat, laps it around his ear, then rests his hairy cheek, featherlight, against Steve’s. Eddie’s heart hammers against Steve’s ribs, and Steve’s races, as if trying to keep pace. That giant extra-Alpha dick is slabbed, wet and leaking, against Steve’s thigh. Their feet tangle, and the crushing, blanketing weight of Eddie’s body is sumptuous.
A single tear wobbles down Steve’s cheek. Eddie is his, he’s never trusted anything more, and he loves Eddie so, so much.
It’s one of the most beautiful moments of his life so far.
A thick gush of slick coats his thighs.
A fleeting heartbeat later, Eddie rears up, flips him over so his nose is buried in the messy straw and his ass offered up. He drives his monster shaft home into Steve’s drenched pussy, and humps Steve halfway to the Otherworld. As Steve shatters into a thousand blissful pieces, he sends a quick prayer of thanks to the Strawberry Moon—for gifting him the most perfect Alpha. One who can stuff his greedy tunnel with exactly what he needs, while smothering him senseless with so much tender love.
When he awakes, daylight floods the tiny mud-and-wattle cottage. His Alpha is spooning him tenderly from behind. Eddie’s knot remains locked inside him, cramming him with dick. The hands gently stroking his belly, tho’, are fully human again.
As is the voice murmuring in his ear: “Morning, Babe.” It’s Eddie’s turn to sound hilariously apologetic. “Yeeeeeah, sorry about last night. The scent of your heat called to me from the other side of the forest, and my wolfy-boy… Let’s just say impulse control isn’t his strong point. Plus, I couldn’t let any other Alpha get to you first. Hope I didn’t scare you too bad?”
“Nah, not really.” Steve smirks lazily, and Eddie nuzzles him so tenderly that a gentle purr starts thrumming in his chest. “Thought I was gonna die of heat pains before you came. Took your sweet time, huh?” A mildly worrying thought strikes. “You… didn’t hurt Argyle, right?”
“Nah, he’s fine. When he saw it was me, he bowed and stepped aside—can’t decide if you two are bloody idiots or adorable. You’re, uh, not feeling too sore?”
“Good sore, Alpha,” says Steve, purrs growing rapturous, and… Aaaaaah, Eddie’s knot still feels amazing, that great dick buried so satisfyingly deep. The teeniest movement from Eddie ignites lazy flares of pleasure and trickles of fresh slick. “You make me feel so good,” he sighs. “You make me feel like I’m the only Omega in the land.”
“Yeeeah, as far as we know, you are the only Omega in the land. I’m a lucky Alpha. And I promise, my Omega, now that I’m sure I can control myself, I’ll never say goodbye for so long again.”
“You better not,” says Steve, then, after twisting for a lazy kiss, “one more thing I’m curious about. How come you weren’t all werewolf last night? And you’re totally you again this morning.”
Eddie doesn’t really know the answer. He figures it might be because his wolf-side didn’t want to hurt Steve and forced his body into a partial shift back. “Your pull on me kicks more butt than the moon, Sweetheart. Leaving you, especially after receiving your beautiful courting gift—it broke my heart.”
Perhaps Mother Nature isn’t such a bitch after all.
“Yet still no bite,” teases Steve, fingering his lightly grazed tho’ chiefly unsullied scent gland.
“Um, super-pointy fangs, Babe? Look, feral me got pretty darn close, all right? We gotta save something for after the wedding.”
They get hitched at the crack of dawn on the summer solstice at the heart of a stone circle. Steve wears flowers and beads in his hair and a forest-green off the shoulder gown, displaying to the whole pack just how restrained his feral Alpha was that night.
He is pregnant already, naturally. Everyone tells him he glows, and he’s glowing inside, too. Eddie’s almost constant belly rubs are both tantalizingly gentle and sweetly possessive. They can’t take their eyes off each other, and their blended scents overpower the many garlands of midsummer blooms.
Steve savors every moment, and all the attention. He still can’t wait to be thrown over Eddie’s shoulder and taken back to their cottage for another good humping. In the event, once the feast and dancing are over, Eddie sweeps him up into a more dignified bridal carry.
“Gonna be extra extra gentle,” Eddie whispers. “Just learned something from Granny M. Pups are rarely conceived on a Strawberry Moon unless it’s a Beta-Beta thing, and when an Alpha and Omega manage to mate without, uh, fang-related tragedies? Basically, you’re carrying at least triplets, Sweetheart.”
Steve’s jaw drops. His heart squeezes, and he can’t do words, so he hugs stupid-tight around his Alpha’s neck and unleashes a ridiculously high-pitched squeal.
Eddie lays him in the beautifully reconstructed nest that will be spilling over with their budding family next spring. He finally gifts Steve his claim mark, before dousing it with healing Alpha licks. That night, he makes the most tender and sweet love to his new bride, satisfying Steve every bit as thoroughly as during their Strawberry Moon rut.

Daylight
Prompt: Red ❤️ Song: Daylight ❤️ Word Count: 2,498 ❤️ Rating: M ❤️ POV: Eddie ❤️ Relationships: Pre-Steddie ❤️ ❤️ Tags: Vampire!Corroded Coffin & Wayne, Canon Divergent, Use of lowercase to show Eddie's blood loss delirium, Eddie needs Steve's blood to recover from the bat attack, Of course Steve willing gives it ❤️For @genderthings Pride Things Bingo Prompt: Eddie Munson ❤️For @corrodedcoffinfest Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Red Ao3
Eddie hadn’t felt pain like this in...well, a long time. Too long, if a few bites from fellow bats could take him down. Clearly, he hadn’t had to fight for his life enough this century.
The boys kept telling him to keep up on his training, but it was the 1980’s! Who did he have to battle this close to the new millennium? Not like he had plans to join the U.S. military any time soon. Been there, done that, got the French Revolution t-shirt to show for it.
So, there he lay, bats spinning above and around him, taking more and more bites out of him, not caring one iota that they were kin of a sort.
Taken out by some supernatural baddie bigger and badder than a vampire and Eddie couldn’t remember the last time he updated his will. It had to be sometime in the 1900’s, right? Whatever, Wayne and the boys’ll take what they want, give the rest.
He felt what little blood was left in his body slowly sludge through his veins. The thought of biting a bat flashed through his mind, but went out as soon the bats fell all around him. Rule #7: Can’t bite the fellow dead.
Shouting pierced the fog of his permanently-dying brain. NO. Dustin. Stay away. no.
Dustin crouched over him, trying to get him to respond. He wouldn’t bite him. He wouldn’t. It’d kill the kid. He was too close to final death to only take a little. He needed…
Deeper shouting.
Steve. fuuuuck.
Eddie could feel him run closer. He forced his eyes to open. Steve. so beautiful.
Beautiful Steve Harrington bent over him, talking, shouting, commanding. Now he would’ve been a good leader of battalions.
“Stay with us Eddie, we’re getting you out of here!”
Eddie flopped his head from one side to the other, trying to tell Steve to leave him. A dying vampire was too dangerous to take around people. They’ll do anything to survive. Again, been there, done that, not doing it again.
“On three, Eddie. It’s gonna hurt, but I’ve got you.”
no
“no.”
“One.”
“No.”
“Two.”
“I need- Steve-”
“A hospital, Eddie. You need a hospital. And I’ll get you there. You just keep talking.”
“No, Steve. I need- Please, Steve, leave me.”
“Not on your life, dude. Stop using what strength you have fighting me!”
Eddie shuddered, spasming against the ground and Steve’s hold. The magic of his immortality fought hard. It wouldn’t let him just die, gently shuffling off this mortal coil. Eddie couldn’t-
His hand shot out, gripping Steve’s cheek hard, pulling him down, pressing his ear to Eddie’s mouth.
“Beautiful Steve Harrington, I need you,” his voice coiled around, sinking into his victim’s heart, promising everything, promising eternity. His magic pulsed through him, pushing him to live, do whatever was necessary to fight off Death. “Need to bite your lovely neck. Can smell your blood, it’s mouth watering. Please. Say yes, Stevie. It’s the only way. Can only live if- Fuck! No!”
He shoved with the last of his might, breaking the connection. Steve fell back on his ass, staring at Eddie with wide lovely eyes, wide calculating eyes, wide remembering eyes.
“Vampire. You, not Vecna.” His eyes hardened with determination. Eddie could tell what we was thinking, even without Jeff’s telepathy power, and wanted to throw his head back and groan in frustration. Can’t this dude not throw himself into danger just once?!
“Eddie. It’ll save you? Yeah? Just need my blood? Okay. Come on, sitting you up.” Steve’s strong strong arms pulled his shoulders off the ground, sitting him up against him. Eddie shook his head against Steve’s shoulder.
“No. Steve. You have to go. I need too much. too much. need it all. please go.”
Steve cupped his head, looking at him so soft. “It’s okay. Take what you need.”
He pressed Eddie’s mouth against those two little moles. like two little vampire bites.
Eddie couldn’t stop his tongue from lapping out, licking the skin there. Salty. Sweaty. Warm. Maybe I can drink just enough for Death to stop looming. Just a little. get more later…
He ran his teeth along the muscle, feeling for the vein. His gums itched, his fangs slid down.
Eddie bit in. Steve jerked against him. Eddie’s arms wrapped around him, holding him hard. Steve’s hand gripped Eddie’s hair at the scalp.
Eddie sucked and burning red blood flooded his mouth, flooded his senses. Red heat slid down his throat. Golden light burst before his eyes. He sucked harder.
Golden liquid daylight. Burning scarlet rays of dawn- steve steve steve only steve there’s so much life in him need need, need it all
Eddie lost himself in the first rays of sunlight he’d truly felt on his skin in hundreds of years. He stood before the sunrise and felt the golden warmth saturate his body, filling every dark dying crevasse of his body, wrapping around his stormy soul, waking it up for first time in so long. He felt so so alive.
He bathed in the heat, reveling in the light.
Hands on him.
Darkness fell around him.
Strong hands ripping him away from that light. He fought hard, clawing at whoever held him flat against the cold, ashy, dead earth. Steve was his. He needed it all. It was his, all his, only his. He’d kill any vampire who tried to take it- him away.
He growled low and long, predatory dark promises rumbling from deep within.
A voice.
He knows that voice. It’s one of his. His Family.
Why would one of his try to take Steve from him!?
no
No, they wouldn’t take Steve.
They’d try to save Steve.
“We have to turn him, son.”
no
not Steve
not lovely beautiful daylight Steve
they couldn’t
he wouldn’t let them
His magic built, roiling within him. He shoved off from the ground, bursting from the bodies holding him down. He pulled Steve from Wayne’s arms, cradled him in his own, and ran.
He could hear Gareth calling him back, Jeff shouting to please let Steve live, Freak trying to use his powers of melody to stop him in his tracks.
But he could feel a spark in Steve, felt that he still lived, that his soul still resided within his body. He wouldn’t let anyone take those from him.
He jumped straight up through the red, pulsing portal, landing hard on the balls of his feet in their old home.
Eddie would get Steve to the hospital, Steve would live a happy mortal life.
Time, and his surroundings, blurred. He ran through trees and neighborhoods, through downtown, through the hospital’s doors.
He held Steve out, “Save him.”
The doctors took him away.
Eddie sat down heavy on a waiting room bench and tipped his head back against the wall, closing his eyes against the bright lights.
Red burned behind his eyelids.
He wanted the golden daylight back.
He pushed his magic outward, following the feeling of Steve, sensing that he was still alive back there with the doctors. He saw that little golden spark still within Steve, glowing and unwavering in its strength.
Eddie heard them before they made it the door. He should stand up, update them, check on the kids.
But that glow.
He just wanted to keep an eye on it a little longer. He needed to keep it safe. What if he stopped watching and it stopped glo-
“Eddie!” Dustin collapse against him, sobbing, and Eddie slammed back into his own body.
“Kid.” Eddie wrapped his arms around Dustin, hugging him tight. “Hey, I’m okay. I got Steve here in time. The doctors have him, he’s okay.”
Dustin reared back, glaring at him from a tear stained face, and spoke tense and low. “You asshole. You’re a vampire and didn’t think to mention that? You didn’t think it might be important to our battle plan? We would’ve strategized differently! And then you, a vampire, went and almost died? What, are you new?”
Gareth snickered, it’d been a long time since anyone had accused Eddie of being new.
“Yeah, asshole,” Jeff pipped up, arms crossed over his chest, “why didn’t you call the rest of into whatever little campaign this is? No, we had to feel your magic pulling life force from us to know you were dying somewhere? It’s a good thing Wayne could see where you were. ‘Cause what was your little Steve Plan there, hm?”
Eddie met Wayne’s eyes above the group, they were always tinged with sadness, but now Eddie had put that look on his face. Blood hot tears pricked at his eyes and his nose scrunched up trying to hold the tears at bay. He hadn’t even thought about Wayne seeing his death, being helpless to do anything but watch. Wayne circled the group and sat beside Eddie, pulling him in with an arm around his shoulders.
Eddie buried his face against Wayne. “I’m sorry, Wayne. I’m sorry.”
Wayne pet his hair and squeezed his arm. “I know, son. Just gotta talk to us when things are going down.”
Eddie nodded against him. “Is everyone else okay? There’s a bunch of kids involved. Wanted to keep them safe, but I didn’t-”
Wayne sighed, pulling his magic around him. “Yeah, kid, they’re gonna live. The one girl’s gonna have a battle of it, but she’s strong. And your Steve’s girl is glaring daggers at you from the other side of the room, so you might want to talk to her.”
“Wayne, she’s his friend, not his girl,” Eddie leaned back, wiping at his cheeks, “but you know that, don’t you, you old so and so?”
Wayne just shrugged with that inscrutable frowny smile gracing his face. Eddie would take that over him looking sad any day.
He stood and his boys, his Family pulled him into a squishing group hug. Their vampiric energies pushed and pulsed around him, checking him over.
They hadn’t had one of their own come this close to final death since Gareth decided to come to America via the Titanic. Thankfully, the cold just sent him into a deep hibernation sleep until they found him in a hospital. And now Eddie had almost been eaten by bats. He was sure he’d never hear the end of it once they learned about that little detail.
He sent out a pulse of his own magic to them, reassuring them back, and stepped back sending a glance to the group across the room. He had some explaining to do.
-
Hours later, after the kids and teens who needed medical attention had been seen, and Max was finally out of her first surgery, Eddie was allowed back to see Steve.
Gareth had smoothed the way, gently coaxing the nurses into believing Eddie was Steve’s family. Eddie knew how careful Gareth was about using his powers of persuasion, so he was truly grateful to him.
Steve was dozing when Eddie entered the room. He moved a chair closer to the bed so he could watch him.
He really was lovely. Like a fallen hero, he lay sheathed in white, hands clasped over his chest; Eddie thought a sword laying flat along his length wouldn’t look out of place. He reached out, brushing the back of fingers along Steve’s side-
Steve jerked, huffing out a laugh, he met Eddie’s eyes. “Dude, that tickles.”
Eddie blinked at him. “You’re awake. How do you feel? They said with the amount of blood they had to transfuse, you could have complications and side effects and-”
“Hey, Eddie, come here,” he patted the bed next to his hip. Eddie perched on the bed and Steve took his hands in his. “Eddie, I’m fine. I feel fine, no chills, no fever, no aches- well, except for my neck, but that’ll take a little longer to heal, you really chomped on hard, dude.”
He laughed and Eddie stared. Did this dude really have that big a death wish? Did he not understand how delicate mortality was? How close he came to a quick forever death?
“Steve. I should get a nurse. They can explain how much blood I took, how close you came to dying. If I hadn’t been stopped, I would’ve-” His throat closed and his face flushed, guilt and shame waged within and he gripped Steve’s hands harder. He forced out, “Steve.”
Steve pulled him forward, tipping Eddie against his body as his shook. Steve held him and soothed him, rubbing a gentle hand along his back and pushing a hand into his hair, tucking Eddie's face against his neck.
“Shhhh, Eddie, it’s okay. I’m okay and you’re okay. We’re both alive-” Eddie huffed and Steve rumbled a laugh, “okay, undead or whatever. But, here’s a secret, baby, I was always going to be okay. Even if you took it all and killed me-”
Eddie grumbled against him, “Being okay because you’d ‘be in heaven’ or whatever would not be my takeaway if I was the reason those kids had to bury you. No offense, but we’d rather-”
“Eddie, no, I mean it literally.” Eddie leaned back far enough to look at him, staring in confusion at Steve’s gentle smile. A blush graced Steve’s cheeks and he huffed a laugh, looking up to the ceiling. “Yeah, I’ve died, like, I don’t know, eight times? That I know of? And yes, a couple of those have been for the kids. So, yeah, if you had killed me, I would’ve come back eventually. Might’ve take a little bit to recover that much blood, so I guess this worked out. So now my body just needs to recover from the bat attacks.”
Steve blinked bashfully at him.
Eddie’s brain was taking a moment to process. He held up a finger and stood. Hands moving, unable to land in one position, he took a deep breath, and spun on his heel to walk to the window before spinning to walk back to the bed, he pointed at Steve.
“You’re immortal?”
“Yep! Seems that way.”
“Not a vampire?”
“Not that I’m aware? Would I definitely know if I was a vampire?”
Eddie blinked. “Yeah. You’d know if you were a vampire. Kinda hard to miss it, I’d say.”
“Hm! Well, then, nope! Not a vampire. Just your garden variety immortal guy.”
Eddie’s mouth opened, no sound came out. Is this what a vampire stroke felt like? “Do the kids know?”
Steve shrugged. “I don’t think so? But they’re smart and have seen me beaten so bad I died, so maybe? Or they think I’m hardy? Didn’t really come up.”
Eddie’s hands came together in prayer at his lips.
“Eddie? You okay?”
Yep. Just having my understanding of the universe turned upside down. Ha. Ooooh wait, we’re both-
“Steve?”
“Eddie?”
“Would you do me the honor of going to dinner with me? Once you’re fully recovered, of course.”
Steve smiled at him, radiant and golden. “It’s a date.”

Daylight - Taylor Swift
I've been sleepin' so long in a twenty-year dark night
(Now I'm wide awake)
I once believed love would be burnin' red
