I’ve seen “tumblr prose” discourse on twt and my opinion on this is that tumblr prose works come off as repetitive and meaningless because these texts are studies of poetic devices and poem structure, not full original poems in the sense that the author is using writing tools to process their own experiences. It’s the same as an artsyle study, you’re not making an original piece YET because you’re still learning from those you admire. There is not actual subject matter in tumblr prose works because that’s not the point, they’re taking pre-existing works and testing the limits of synonyms by seeing how they can reword them. As an artist and a poet I have done both! I’ve redrawn pngs of my favourite anime characters and wrote drabbles about Icarus.

It’s an unskippable step in writing because teaching your mind HOW to casually translate real life events with metaphor, hyperbole, onamonapia, etc takes TIME. I’m at a great step of writing poetry currently because I was able to bridge the gap of everything I wrote being too literal or a poetic device study with no substance after years of practice. You can’t rush yourself to achieving this and your brain is ready when it is ready. Let tumblr prose people study the poetic devices of metaphor, simile and allusions and they will move onto other devices (if they want to) when it’s time. We need people who actually study writing in this day and age of slop.
