hey this was for my 19th birthday and it kinda held true for my 20th but my friends here threw a party for me and now i keep a polaroid of us in my wallet

my birthday is a tense subject for me.

i take care to remember birthdays and try to make people smile. i want them to be happy, to feel celebrated for being here. not everyone gets the chance.

and then my birthday comes around.

and i get well wishes from friends ive known for only a few months and its nice.

but the people ive known for years? nothing.

i have to remind them.

and it feels silly to be upset about them forgetting. and maybe its just some trauma from my childhood. but i wonder if im not enough to remember.

the room is completely dark when you wake, the penumbrae in shades of gloom seeming to mock your current state: tired, restless and above all else, in pain, the cramps on your lower stomach being the cause for you to be awake at this ungodly hour.

with bleary eyes, you look at the clock by your bedside. 3:26 am. sighing, you dangle your legs by the side of the bed, careful not to wake cyno, who’s sleeping soundly, his chest rising and falling steadily, in tandem with the minutes ticking by.

tiptoeing, you make your way out of your and your boyfriend’s shared bedroom, momentarily abandoning the haven that opens a portal into the land of dreams. with a last glance at cyno’s sleeping form, you make to exit the space, hoping to return shortly after, a little more refreshed.

“[name]? where are you going?” cyno’s hoarse voice from sleep calls out, just as you were making your way out to the corridor. even under his sleepy gaze, those intense scarlet eyes of his never fail to make your heart race.

you fluster, and your boyfriend notices the frown in your features, one of your hands cradling your lower abdomen. with a sigh, cyno gets up, his silky hair the color of snowy plains and clear clouds falling over his shoulders.

“come on, go back to sleep, i’ll get you the medicine and a glass of water.” he reassures you, his arms now around your form, a kiss to your brow just as he parts, his hand interlocking with yours as he tugs you towards bed.

“but i… i didn’t want to wake you…” you sound bashful, he notices, almost guilty. as he tucks the covers closer around you, sitting by your side, he combs strands of hair out of your face and says:

“did you really expect me not to notice when my own partner wakes up at 3 am in the morning groaning in pain?” cyno’s knuckles brush over your cheek. “it’s okay, my love. rest now, let me take care of you.”

a few minutes pass, the effects of the trusty medicine tighnari gave you once starting to sink in. and with it, the waves in the sea of the realm of dreams start rocking gently against the shore of sleep, your eyelids start to feel heavy, yet the dull pain still won’t let you catch the waverider of sleep, a sharp rock jutting out in the otherwise rounded coast.

but, you don’t need to worry for too long: cyno’s arms gently bring you closer to his chest, his fingers running sooting patterns along your abdomen. your back is pressed against him, your lover’s steady heartbeat accompanying the waves of dreams, guiding you to port. his lips brush against your shoulders every now and then, eliciting pleased hums from you. it makes him smile.

eventually, your ship reaches port, your eyes closing as your lips utter cyno’s name, your hand clasping his. his warmth lingers around you even inside your dreams, an anchor, the wings that catch you when you fall.

the clock strikes 4:17 am. you’re asleep.

with a last look at the time and, with it, a glimpse of the starry infinity outside the window, cyno’s eyes close too, his own ship into dreamland following the same path as yours. he will embrace and protect you, in wake and in sleep.

the sun rose late that morning, the stars reigning over nightly heavens asking him to give a few moments more to the couple peacefully slumbering under the soft gaze of the moon.

i want someone to be my undoing

to watch as the string unravels from the broken pieces of my soul

to gather all of the toys and trinkets that fall from their hiding place

to hold them in their lap, stroking fingers carefully over their faces

to watch the tears pour from my eyes, from the river of my soul

to hold me in the warmth they create until i am both spring and fall, summer and winter

is it so wrong to want to be loved?

to wish to be so badly wanted they couldn't breathe without you?

it doesn't have to be full of grand gestures 

i don't need large gifts 

money and status are of little importance to me

i simply want to be connected 

to come home and sigh into the arms of someone who doesn't even need to ask

to open my arms to them and have them sink in like they've finally found home

to share whispers late at night and early in the morning

to exchange glances over cups of coffee and end up laughing

to lock pinkies as we walk down the sidewalk, floating quietly in our silence

is that really so much to ask for?

the world passes me by and i wave at it

i always think i should be sad about watching things happen outside of me

shouldn't i want to participate? shouldn't i be there?

but no motivation comes and so i sit by my window and watch

i watch the little kids run around the park at a birthday party

the birds chase each other on the branches of the trees

the clouds twine together and release their rain 

and i sit by my window and watch life extend infinitely before me

i will be a god

my name will fall from his lips in reverence

he will chant my name as a prayer

i will give him the ground beneath his feet and the clouds above his head

he will be protected under me, by me

in return he will grant me his love

it will feed me like the sweet nectar of ambrosia 

he will kiss the ground i walk on and i will drink the emotions that overflow

the joy in his eyes is yellow and it's delicious

i say sorry for stepping on the back of your shoe

it slides between my teeth like a piece of paper

i say sorry for the death in your family and the roots that had dug into my heart are pulled out through my mouth

i say i love you to a friend as we pass in the hallway

it floats along like a cloud

i say i love you staring into your eyes in front of my door and it pulls the air from my lungs, dropping like a fog at our feet

i say i miss you in a text once its been a few days

its a small stream from my mouth, a moment of water

i say i miss you in the quiet darkness of my room and a whirlpool opens up in my chest, water roaring through my mouth and onto my bed

some things are too loud for darkness

i turn my phone volume down when i turn off my lights

the darkness is soft, wrapping the edges of my vision

it pillows me in its comfort until i no longer worry

it bleeds as sound pierces it, inky whiteness slithering out

loud sounds are sharp, cutting through my soft black pillow

the world outside quiets down, honoring the silence of the dark

the darkness means no loud noise

no heavy steps, no drum sets, no droning voices, no dogs

it is soft and i am rocked to sleep

there is something divine in a rage so righteous,

rage that fills you up

bubbling, broiling, rolling around 

it knocks against things inside of you, 

breaking, crashing, shattering 

it consumes you eating up all other emotions until there is only rage

and then you let it out

and it unleashes itself in waves

whipping, slicing, burning

until all that is left is silence.

the fire of your rage cleanses its sins

and you are absolved

i am afraid of ending

not of dying

but of ending

im afraid that one day the last memory of me will fade away, the things i used to love will have changed so dramatically that i will no longer remember them, i wont remember the color of my childhood room, or the street of my preschool 

the things i gave society will be returned to their graves, one last word spoken above a gravestone before freezing the soil above the casket

my sayings and one liners will fall upon deaf ears as my soul tries its hardest to stick to something, trying to find something to hold on to before it is swallowed up by the void of silence 

my words will one day rot on their papers

one day my sounds will stop echoing 

one day i will end

but maybe i wont
