HOLY SHIT Y'ALL Megamind is literally a retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac. It is so obvious. I am so stupid. I can't believe I didn't notice this until now. I even thought about a week ago that it was a cute touch they had named the female lead Roxanne! 😫
But yeah so there's this guy who's crazy smart and bold and stylish and good at flair and Presentation! but he lacks the confidence to court the girl of his dreams, whose name is Roxan(n)e, because she's made it known that she's with his rival. Also he has a disproportionately large facial feature!
Instead of fessing up he disguises his appearance so he can woo Roxan(n)e with his voice and words and intellect, pretending to be a new suitor. He doesn't confess his deception until Roxan(n)e figures it out herself and confronts him, and he dies at the end of the story in one final, tragic display of daring and panache.
And then someone looked at that and asked the obvious question "Yes but what if he was also an alien mad scientist supervillain with a minion who's a fish in a mechanical gorilla suit?"
One thing that makes Galaxy Quest such a good film is how kind it is about the diehard fans, from the nerds who have an encyclopedic knowledge of every inch of the ship to the fangirls who squeal over their favourite ship, it'd have been so easy to make fun of them and portray them as pathetic losers and asocial freaks, but instead they're portrayed as sweet and earnest and having firm and valued and real friendships with each other as a result of their fandom, and being right to care about the show as much as they do. The movie isn't a love letter to Star Trek, it's a love letter to Star Trek fans.
Has anybody else noticed that it seems that nobody tells children fairytales anymore? It seems that they only read them books or have them watch movies; oral storytelling appears to have vanished. Perhaps it’s just in my area, but it has quite literally been years since my friends, family, and I have met a child who has even referenced a fairytale character that didn’t appear in a Disney movie.

Whatever your thoughts on his work, this is a very good read. Without excusing any of the behavior of some of the most belligerent fans, it was refreshing to see the article acknowledge some of the overzealous hate that got people so defensive in the first place.
