“Ashton, why does your fridge say ‘stop being an idiot’?” Ashton glanced over to where Luke was staring at the fridge door in mild amusement. 

“Oh, that’s just Calum - ignore him. I usually do” Ashton rolled his eyes as a picture fell off the wall as he finished speaking, the thud causing Luke to spin around, eyes wide.

“What was that?” 

“I just brushed past the picture and knocked it off, that’s all.”

Luke narrowed his eyes at Ashton, the older man chuckling as he hung the picture back up. 

“Come on, let’s watch this damn movie you don’t shut up about.”

They’ve only been on Polus for two weeks. Two weeks, and already their crew of ten has dwindled down to four. When they’d first landed, and stepped off the dropship into the icy, biting air of the barely-habitable planet, the energy among the crew had been wary but overall positive. It’s no secret that Polus is the most dangerous base - a favourite haunt for impostors given its distance from other MIRA colonies and its general dark and dreary environment - but many of the crew were new recruits, excited to be visiting their first faraway planet and eager to conduct their research. The fact that an incident hasn’t occurred on Polus in a few months is a good sign, to them: a sign that maybe things are taking a turn for the better. They should have known it was only a matter of time.

“Bella, can you go give this to your dad for me please?”

Little arms wrap around your legs as Bella appears next to you, looking up at what you’re doing. Luke’s phone vibrates with a text from Michael, one that looks urgent regarding their next single. You and Luke have been trying your hardest to slip ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ into conversation whenever you could — hoping Bella would catch on quickly, although you didn’t want to pressure her.

Bella looks up at you, carefully taking the phone into her little hands and looking between you and him. He’s sat at the dining table, watching Bella to see if she knew that ‘dad’ meant him. He doesn’t say anything, just quietly observes her whilst she decides what to do.

“He’s right there, baby.” You tell her, gesturing to Luke where he’s sat. She smiles behind her pacifier, taking little steps towards Luke and standing next to his chair, holding his phone up for him to take.

“Here!” She exclaims, passing it into his hand as she looks up at him.
