Skate leech (Pontobdella muricata)
Taxonomy: Animalia, Annelida, Clitellata, Hirudinea, Euhirudinea, Rhynchobdellida, Piscicolidae, Pontobdellinae, Pontobdella, P. muricata
Description: Also called skatesuckers, P. muricata is a leech species characterised by its grey coloration and knobbled bodies.
Lifestyle: This species is found in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the North Sea. They are parasitic, and as their name suggests, they primarily parasitise skates. If skates are not available, they will also parasitise other flat fish, such as rays and plaice. They are vectors of the protozoa Trypanosoma raiae, which comes from the same genus as the protozoans that cause chagas disease and sleeping sickness in humans. They lay eggs, which can be found on oyster shells.
