i have this one friend who no matter how much i try to convince her, insists that kanej is a ship that is doomed.

she claims that if you’d study their personalities closely, you’d notice that they are not compatible.

when i study inej, i see a girl, who constantly tries to abide with her morals, who went through too much, who is scared and wants the comfort of a family.

in kaz, i see a boy. broken by his past, and that only fuels him more. who strives on fear and is willing to do anything. who sees money as security and the one thing that will prevent his past from reoccurring.

i see them both trying to overcome their own demons, them trying to be better for each other. who in each their way, love each other. kaz would do any job for inej and inej watches over him like no other saint had.

they fight their way out together. and even if their relationship is doomed from the start, their love is something so special, that even heartbreak would be worth it.

my friend still doesn’t get it.

when it comes to alina’s ending, people get so so god damn stuck on how ‘unfair’ it is that alina loses her powers ignoring the way that they were redistributed bc she bent the rules of the world beyond their capability by seeking out a third amplifier but anyway that nobody bothers to point out that in the moment she loses her powers, alina herself does not give a shit. she is rather too busy giving a shit about something else entirely.

what causes alina to lose her powers? seeking out and killing the third amplifier. who is the third amplifier? mal. 

yet when alina’s powers are redistributed, and the fold is unfolding in ‘a miracle’ because of this, alina herself does not give a single flying fuck. she is, in that moment, going completely fucking feral because mal is dead. she literally says

“the saints could keep their miracles […] mal was dead.”

we have alina, on the battlefield, in the dark and then the gathering light as the fold comes apart, screaming her heart out. we see the image we have been threatened with for the whole trilogy - that power corrupts, that too much power makes you go mad. and alina has held it together incredibly well up until this point! she hasn’t tipped over the edge, she hasn’t gone mad, she’s stayed grounded while having increasing power. now arguably that is partly bc alina is a good person but it’s also partly bc mal kept her anchored at all times but that’s a whole other meta

and yet mal is dead for all of five minutes and it is in that moment that we see alina completely fall to pieces. her screaming at the twins “BRING HIM BACK TO ME”, knowing she’s making no sense, screaming over their quiet words of doubt, yelling “KEEP WORKING”, because alina doesn’t care! she doesn’t care about the fact that the fold is coming apart, she actually isn’t focused on the fact her powers are gone, all she cares about is that mal is gone and nothing absolutely NOTHING is worth him not being alive and by her side. what finally makes alina break is mal dying. 

so i am once again saying i do not see how you can see alina’s ending and not see that she got the ending she wanted. she lived three, four, five minutes with mal dead. and completely lost her grasp of reality when that happened. a world without mal was hollow, empty, terrifying to alina. in that moment she can’t and doesn’t focus on anything other than that. and yes! she mourns the loss of her powers! of course she does! but that quiet sadness of them being gone is nothing nothing compared with the complete feral rage and distress when mal has died (temporarily). you as a reader may have wished to keep those powers in her place. ok. but for alina herself? all she wanted was mal. all she wanted was a quiet, peaceful life with her soulmate. she spent three minutes without him and promptly decided to tell everyone ‘I DIED HERE’ because she has had enough. she is finally given a choice and losing her powers gives her the freedom to CHOOSE MAL.
