Sirius Black Had A Choice

Sirius was not handed his life on a silver platter.

Sirius chose to step out of his comfort zone and befriend James instead of the people his parents wanted him to befriend.

Given that Sirius had spent a lifetime being brainwashed, I would not be surprised if he still held some prejudices when he started his first year. But he chose to keep his mouth shut and get to know people like Remus and Lily. He chose to remain friends with Remus even after finding out he was a werewolf. 

He chose to be ostracized by his family and other purebloods in Slytherin. He chose to argue with his parents until the split was irreparable. He chose to run away and risk being disinherited. He chose to join the Order and risk his life, even though he knew that some of his family members and childhood playmates would be standing on the other side. Sirius chose to put his life at risk for his friends. He chose to continue fighting after his father, brother, and many of his fellow Order members died. He chose to risk his life for his friends. He chose to risk his life to protect Harry.

Draco made different choices.

James trusted all of them

Was talking to a friend about wolfstar, and about how they didn’t trust each other during the first war with Voldemort. However, this Librarian thinks that when it came to picking a secret keeper, James Potter didn’t care about any of their suspicions. 

He trusted all of them, equally, but whoever he chose as secret keeper would be forced to go into hiding as well as him. Now, you’ve got an amazing group of friends, a family, who once a month come together (or try to), to protect another friend from hurting himself. So if the stag is forced to go into hiding, and another member has to go into hiding too, then the real choice James is making is, which marauder to leave behind to protect Remus from the wolf?

The rat cannot stop a werewolf, cannot keep it safe, and once they leave school, doesn’t even help get the team into safe transformation space. Peter is the obvious choice to send into hiding. He doesn’t get cabin fever like Sirius does, and it leaves Sirius to help take care of Remus. 

We forget that they’re scared, and that James doesn’t know how long they’ll be in hiding. Even if he knew about Sirius and Remus being suspicious of each other, he’d still trust that Sirius was the best to take care of Remus like he always had. James would still trust Padfoot to protect of Moony. James would trust Peter to hold their secret, just like he held their secret of being animagus. 

And Lily? She’s pregnant, in a war, and within a few years of realizing that her once best friend, is actually evil and working for the people trying to kill her, a friend that has just recently betrayed her. She doesn’t know who to trust, so she trusts James decision. 

He trusted all of them, with his life. James Potter was just trying to protect his family, all of them.

Nothing mattered except that Lupin should stop pretending that Sirius was not going to emerge at any moment. Lupin dragged Harry away from the dais. Some part of Harry realised, even as he fought to break free from Lupin, that Sirius had never kept him waiting before. Sirius had risked everything, always, to see Harry, to help him. If Sirius was not reappearing out of that archway when Harry was yelling for him as though his life depended on it, the only possible explanation was that he could not come back.
