I’M A JUNIOR!!
Today was my last day in Sophomore year of high school, and I’m officially in Junior year!!
Farewell to one of the craziest, most turbulent, insanest yet most amazing years of my life.
I’ve grown a lot in knowledge, life experience and as a person. This year’s lows really hurt me, but there were people by my side at all times, keeping me above the water and helping me through thick and thin. The highs were some of my brightest memories, that I’ll treasure forever. The amazing people I’ve met or grown closer to, all the moments we shared, are all things that I will remember as my best things.
The closer I get to the end of high school the more afraid I am, but this year really demanded me to be strong. I got to the end of it, and (quoting fall out boy) if I can live through this, I can do anything.
Happy thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates, good luck to everyone having finals, hope you’re all doing the best you can!

Pray for Brazil
We have elected a racist, homophobic, sexist and intolerant man as our new president. Things aren’t going to be easy now. Please pray for all of us, all the women, lgbtq+ people, black people, native brazilians, all of us. I just hope that things end up alright.
Pray that we survive. We are back to 1964.

types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.
if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.
if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.

college advice from someone who’s been on both sides of it
Tumblr media
So I’m finishing up my Ph.D. and preparing to depart for the real world (no, just kidding, I’m going to be in school forever, only in a different capacity) and I thought I’d put together a list of some college tips to share with you all. I graduated with my B.A. in 2012, magna cum laude, with 2 majors, 1 honours thesis, 2 on-campus jobs, and 3 music things. Since then, I’ve gone to grad school and also taught six semesters of first-year seminars. Now I’m going on the job market for teaching positions. All of this means that I’ve seen both sides of the college experience, as a student and as an instructor. There are a lot of great & useful college advice posts going around studyblr this time of here, and I wanted to add my own. I hope it’s useful. So here we go, with a “read more” because it’s long (sorry if you’re on mobile):
academics
find your classrooms ahead of time (profs’ offices too)
figure out how long it will take you to walk between places
figure out where your best seat will be & claim it
say hi to the people next to you, learn their names
take notes in class
take advantage of extra credit
try your best not to fall asleep in class (and if you do fall asleep, apologise to the prof afterwards)
bring your glasses if you need them, don’t be stubborn about it
check out the library, wander in the stacks, talk to the librarians
figure out how & where to print
buy used books/textbooks, or rent them, but be careful with ebooks (some profs don’t allow them)
plan breaks into your class schedule, or block everything together, whichever works best for you
work out the pros & cons of 8am classes and/or night classes
plan ahead – have a planner, put things in it, do them
fake deadlines are a thing (write down earlier deadlines, trick yourself into meeting them, bask in satisfaction)
grades won’t be what they were in high school
keep in mind GPA values: a 3.5 will see you graduating with honours
be nice to the departmental administrative staff, thank them for helping you (even with small things)
office hours versus emailing profs: both will get your questions answered (probably) but if you can go and talk in person, do it
profs & TAs are people too, they have lives, they have bad days
if something comes up, talk to your prof, be honest but don’t overshare, just show them you’re trying
on that note, try
Keep reading

how to feel good about yourself when school is kicking your ass.
School’s tough, and when you’re getting hours of study and homework dumped on you every class, it’s easy to feel swamped, and it’s even worse when you feel like you’re not making progress anywhere else either. These things have seriously helped me with my mental and physical well-being, hopefully they can help you too!
1. Get the Forest App.  It’s $3 on the app-store, and trust me its $3 well spent. i use this app pretty much whenever I shouldn’t be using my phone. in class, studying, working out, not only does it make sure i stay off my phone, it feels really good to look back on all the time I’ve spent focused throughout the week.
2. If you’re gonna waste time, do it properly.  Limit the time you spend scrolling social media to 10 minutes. I can’t count how many times I’ve been on Instagram explore page and suddenly an hour has gone past. This makes you feel crap. If you’re gonna waste time, do it in a way that can be measured. watch a tv show, ted talk, or youtube. make a social media post. It’ll make you feel like you’re spending your time doing something and that’s good in it’s own way.
3. Clean your room.  Feeling ridiculously overwhelmed? Clean your room. I don’t care how much work you need to do, or how soon it’s due. If you’re stressed you wont get anything worthwhile done. So clean your room, make your bed, vacuum the floor. It’ll calm you down and make you feel better about yourself. I promise.
4. Leave the junk food to the weekends. I know, everybody says it. But if you’re eating crap 24/7, it’s going to drag you down. I hate the idea of diets, they’re designed for failure and then you feel even worse, but trying to avoid junk from monday to friday helps a lot with your general perception of yourself.
5. Work out. Another cliche! But they’re cliche’s because they work. I don’t care how often you work out or how much you do, just make sure you do it regularly and do enough to feel tired but good about yourself after woulds. it makes a difference. trust me.
6. Do a skin care routine & use face masks If you dont have a skin care routine, you need one. Not a fancy one by any means (some of us are uni students, I know) just a cetaphill cleanser and moisturiser day and night (with any creams / other products you may use) does the trick. It helps maintain routine and feel refreshed. Facemasks will help you feel like a self care goddess, even if they’re $2.
7. Burn candles & paint your nails Get a few cheap candels (just make sure they wont give you a headache) and burn them whilst you listen to music and paint your nails, its incredibly relaxing and makes you feel like you’re really taking care of yourself.
8. Have a hobby Last one! Learn something completely outside of school. Cooking, art, writing, photography, even if you suck, find something you enjoy and do it, you need a break from everything around you.
These things have honestly helped turn my esteem and habits around these past years, it wont happen over night but just remembering to do these things every now and then will help you feel better, I promise.

Little things that help moods:
- getting enough sunshine - opening the curtains - eating regular meals - short walks with your favourite music - don’t stay up until 3am - don’t try to relate to negative tumblr text posts - get off tumblr/social media if it’s unhealthy - shower - don’t stay in bed the whole day - plan out your day - listen to music - change your clothes - set yourself small goals - say yes to fun events - drink water, it takes 5 seconds - talk to a close friend - remind yourself: a bad mood can lie to you - you’re not unwanted or hopeless - you deserve love so be nice to yourself

a mix of cloud and moon
types of people
moon - candid photos. listening to songs under a blanket. scented candles. the glow of city lights past midnight. picking a wildflower for yourself.
flower - blushing from smiling too much. a bouquet of roses from a lover. a wish on a fallen eyelash. love letters. giving your whole heart to someone. birds singing in the morning.
song - blowing a kiss to the stars. potted plants and stacks of filled notebooks. old magazines. walking down a street in paris. sketching a stranger on the train. silhouettes at 5pm.
sunset - messy scribbles on polaroids. memories tinted with gold. 80s music. a road trip with your best friends. cold soda in the dappled shade. a shell from a beach five summers ago.
cloud - a million daydreams. the comforting scent of old books. fresh sheets after a bath. fairy lights and fluffy cushions. cookies and milk. laughing with someone and being unable to stop.
mist - watching a small raindrop roll down the window. putting on earphones in a bus. staring at the ceiling and thinking about nothing. music from a time you’d rather forget.

destroy the idea that crying is negative. crying is relief, a way to let all of the sadness, anger, joy and emotion out. end the idea that we need to stop crying, stop letting out emotion, stop being human. end it.

How to cope with emotional overwhelm
Hey! So, school starting again means getting used to a lot of new things. New subjects, new teachers, new schedule, and it isn’t easy. Getting so overwhelmed you want to just crawl in your bed and become part of it is normal, but there are ways that I’ve learned over time to avoid getting to this extreme point. I hope it helps!!
Be prepared: cheesy, I know, but actually being aware of what’s going to happen helps a lot. New school? Learn the locations of stuff. New teachers? Ask older students who had them how their classes are. New schedule? Learn it in advance, know which textbooks you need to take, how many classes you have in each day.
Plan out things: you don’t need a bullet journal or anything fancy for that! Get a piece of paper and divide it in 7 spaces, one for each day of the week. Need to pack your bag on sunday night? Write it down. A teacher has asked to read a chapter of the book? Set aside some time for that. Knowing what you need to get done on each day and how much time you need for each thing makes it a lot more manageable.
Rely on your friends: having friends that are going through the same as you are makes everything easier. You don’t feel like you’re the only one worried about things, they can help you in things you’re struggling and you can help them. And when all of you get tired of thinking or even hearing the word ‘school’, you can plan nights out or just watch some netflix while eating popcorn and complaining. Everyone needs a bit of that once in a while!
I hope these tips were helpful for someone out there! My inbox is always open if anyone needs to talk about anything, school related or not, and keep in mind that there is more to life than just school. Don’t let grades, stress or overwhelm stop you from living a good life and taking care of yourself!
