one hundred days of productivity - day two !
today was supposed to be my first day of classes, but my prof cancelled class because his flight into our city got delayed. so instead i spent that time working on my gender studies readings for next week! i'm about a third of the way through the intro to the second sex by simone de beauvoir-- i'm finding it really interesting and have taken some good notes !!! i'm gonna try do at least another 3 pages tonight.
i also made a new resume, since i got accepted into a work study program! i'm going to apply to a social media manager position for my department, admin in the office of social work, a graphic designer position for the EDID office (equity, diversity, inclusion & decolonization), and library customer service. i'm hoping to land one of the positions because i don't wanna look for an off campus job (work on campus will be much easier to work around my school schedule).

one hundred days of productivity - day one !
today i skipped out on some panels i was planning on going to, purely because my anxiety wasn't having it. but i did get started on my school readings! my classes start tomorrow, so i read the syllabus for each of my classes (aside from my intro to narrative class, which hasn't been uploaded by the prof yet).
i also got started on the readings for my exploring disability class !!! i read and took notes on one chapter of approaching disability by mallet & runswick-cole (i have to do two chapters by tuesday), and i'm about to get started on my gender studies readings (the second sex by simone de beauvoir.

with school starting this week, just a reminder that if you have a mental health condition it is PARAMOUNT to take care of yourself and keep on top of managing your illness in school. not just for your grades, but for yourself. you deserve to be healthy.
for me, my biggest struggle atm is the possibility of relapsing into anorexia as major transitions are a trigger for me. self care for me right now looks like:
booking my counselling appointments NOW. personal counselling fills up fast and it's good to get in asap. it's also good to get in BEFORE you are in crisis mode-- prevention is much easier than building myself back up after a relapse.
keeping snacks in my bag. being an off campus student makes it far too easy to skip meals-- i know i will defend my choices by saying i was too busy, food on campus is too expensive, etc. but if i have some snacks in my bag, there is no excuse not to at least eat a little something.
putting all of my lectures, tutorials, and assignments into my google calendar ASAP so that i don't end up having a panic attack not knowing what's coming next
making sure i am up to date on my medication refills-- i am bad for deciding i'm "too busy" to pick up my prescription, which leads to me going days without my meds.
making sure i have a few extras of my meds in my bag-- it's easy to forget to take them in the morning, so i keep 5 doses in my bag in case i remember i forgot them while i'm on campus. it is so much easier to learn when your brain has the chemicals it needs to function
TALKING TO MY SUPPORT SYSTEMS! this is a big one. i'm letting my friends know i'm having a tough time so they can check in on me and i have a bit of accountability to keep myself safe and healthy.
remember, your health and wellness comes before your grades ALWAYS. it's okay to need time off. it's okay to take a reduced course load. it's even okay to drop out if you realize that that school is detrimental to you right now. you need to take care of YOU first. there is nothing you can do if you aren't around anymore.

Rare Language Learning: Polari
If you have ever used the words:
- Naff
- Butch
- Camp
You have unknowingly been speaking the sociolect known as Polari, the language of queer people primarily used in the 30s to the 70s. Polari is now an endangered language, as labelled by the University of Cambridge
Something of note: Many resources out there imply (or state) that Polari was a language invented and used solely by white cis gay men, which is decidedly untrue. Many words of Polari come from drag culture, lesbians, and the Romani people and their language. The use of ‘the language of British gay men’ may be a more palatable title to the general public, but it is not to me. I did my best to curate a variety of resources, but unfortunately much of queer history has been lost many more decades than I’ve been alive, if you have any other resources for studying Polari I would love to read them, message me or leave a link in the replies.

How to write a thesis and defend it like a pro
A guide from a girl who didn’t believe she could do it.
happy to have you here my beloved study community and thank you for all your thoughtful wishes on my thesis defence 🤎today I’ll try to share with you all my tips & tricks on how I got there.
productivity tips:
1. start early ✍🏻
as soon as your professor announces your topic or you choose it, it is time to start before there is still not so much resistance. trust me, you’ll feel on top knowing that it’s you who did it first.
2. don’t be afraid to ask for help 🎓
do you think you’re stupid for asking? if I thought so I’d be getting my answers from tarot cards. but seriously, your mentor is the one who is supposed to be doing their job. of course try to do it in moderation, but ask questions because it is your success.
3. consistency ≠ quality 📄
you know how they talk about this annoying one all the time but really this is so important. you have to establish a clear goal, for me it was writing 3 pages per day. sometimes I didn’t feel like doing it so I wrote 2 or even one, but I showed up and tried my best with what I could write. you might write one page one day and the next one you’ll get the spark and finish the chapter.
4. set clear goals. 🙇🏻♀️
this one is fully connected with previous because this is 50% of your success. not having a routine with this task won’t lead you anywhere. let’s say you’re morning person so you wake up and do your best at 7 am consistently until 10 and you’re done for the day (or opposite if you’re a night owl). as James Clear says, it’s tiny changes but remarkable results.
5. make it enjoyable 🍫
you know this feeling when you finish something hard and you feel so much better. this is what they call hard work dopamine release, because you’ve worked for it.
but there’s a way how you can actually enjoy your thesis writing:
1. buy scented aesthetic seasoned candles 🕯️
2. always keep your study area clean 🫧
3. be a coffee or a tea queen/king ☕️ & 🍵
4. study beats / dark academia music (but keep it undistracting)
5. watch study tik-toks or study motivation movies like Gilmore Girls.
6. reward yourself but in moderation 💐
youtube channel recommendations:
💞 Unjaded Jade (her video: How to Write Your Dissertation)
💞 Dr Amina Yonis (she’s honestly an amazing woman who breaks down writing with AI, thesis components, resources that you can use & so much more)
💞 Merve (long study session videos with breaks + livestreams without music)
💞 ASMR Weekly (study in a Hogwarts ambience with a different time options, truly magical space)
a personal tip: watch study vlogs from people getting their ish together, it will keep you going when you will start to slack off (Yoora Jung, Phedra Dee, daiz and others)
writing tips ✍🏻
1. please cite your resources straightaway.
don’t repeat my mistakes and don’t spend time searching for what you didn’t save.
2. create a separate folder for your bachelor’s thesis resources.
this is a smart move so your documents aren’t over the place.
3. deep rewriting.
after you’ve done some reading you can come up with your own thoughts on topic that your previous paragraph is built on, that’s what they call your original work.
4. check for plagiarism and correct it.
there are many available resources on the Internet. many universities use Turnitin from UniCheck. some universities give access for personal student use, some check the work when it’s done.
before submitting it, which was really stressful for me, I used my.plag.com.ua for checking my work and I’ve got small percentage still didn’t change it up, but I do recommend it to you if you have more than 20 percent to have a positive feedback.
thesis defence day 📄
1. make a visually appealing presentation.
it is supposed to help you, not stress you out. of course you shouldn’t add all the text that you have, but simply add the most important information.
2. write your speech text in advance.
3. rehearse your performance (at least twice but don’t overdo it)
4. ask yourself questions (simply send your topic to ChatGPT and ask to write questions for your thesis). It helped me gradually because some questions were asked at the real defence.
5. when answering questions, be confident.
this is where you will prove your subject mastery but even if you don’t know the answer - don’t show it, start from afar. some people on interviews use the same technique, but they never tell the truth while their opponent is still satisfied with answer. I actually believe it works like that.
☕️🫧 remember: you’re more capable than you think. your worth isn’t based on your achievements. it is simply about trying your best with what you have. make the journey enjoyable!

studyblr intro !!!
hi !!! im soleil (or sunny) and i'm entering my first year of social justice & peace studies with a minor in english (class of '28) !!! i am (hopefully) using this to then become a highschool teacher (english and social science) with a specialty in urban education.
i live in canada, so all of my knowledge is in relation to the canadian university system. i am disabled, both physically (hEDS + co) and mentally/developmentally (autism, adhd, and mental health disabilities). i'm a bigender lesbian as well !!!
outside of my studies i am a poet (hoping to work toward publication someday), a musician (10 instruments + vocals), and work full time at a nonprofit in the summer, while volunteering during the year.
i do not start my school year until september '24 (currently finishing my final highschool exams) but with all the prep for university happening now, i wanted to make this account 😊 happy learning!
