Succession 1.01 | 4.10
#the way they both became their father but in completely different ways#you know#Like Shiv got his cut throatness and inteligence and determination#and Kendall tried so hard to emulate those ‘good’ parts of his father that he became a toxic presence just like him#and instead of commanding respect he tried to command fear alone#because he didn’t truly understand his father#but like in an abused child way#yk

what succession always did well was that it’s crudeness never felt performative or there for shock value or to illicit audience reaction or to be edgy or experimental it was because the characters actually Would fucking say that and Would fucking do that for convoluted reasons laid out to us over and over again in show like this guy isn’t going to psychosexually ironically unironically call his dad’s 65yo corporate lawyer ‘mommy’ because hes the funny one it’s because 80 years ago a four year old and a five and a half year old were speaking with their eyes in the hull of u-boat fleeing from the war

Logan Roy makes absolutely sure all of his kids look the way he desires. It’s why Kendall still looks like a daddy’s boy at 40, and it’s why Shiv changed her hair when she started chasing the ceo position. When Kendall first met Stewy he had an ugly, neat haircut. His hair was parted on the side and nearily slicked to stay in place all day. This of course is not a normal appearance for the average middle schooler. Stewy quickly catched onto this quirk, and teased Ken for his hairdo, unaware that his friend had no choice in the matter. It’s important to note that stewy is from a much more open household, his parents, while unhappy about it, allow him to straighten his hair to fit in better at school. He eventually convinces Kendall fo let him cut his hair himself. It looks bad, it’s choppy and uneven but Kendall is so so happy. The next day Ken comes to school with a black eye and a shaved head. They don’t talk about this again. This was an important shaping moment for both of their characters, for Ken it was his first taste of rebellion, of taking something from his father. For Stewy it was a first time altercation with Logan, it was the moment he realised how awful he is, and the moment he vowed to protect Ken from him at all costs. But despite the event being long forgotten by Ken he still blames himself sometimes, when his thoughts stray too far at night.
(Headcanon, obviously)
