“Powerful men keep saying “I didn’t know” instead of “I’m horrified that this happened under my watch, and given that I still possess power, want to learn how to prevent it from happening again."

Me too.
I feel so lost.  I keep trying to convince myself that things will get better but the truth is i don't know how much longer i can keep telling myself that before  it all sounds the same.  They tell you to come forward.. to tell the truth.. but what they don't ell you is that when you do come forward... when you do tell the truth nobody is going to believe you. you'll spend countless hours in the bottom of your shower wishing you never said anything.. wishing you could make it all go away... wishing you could just go back to that moment... wishing the pain would fade.. They don't tell you that with telling the truth you have to accept that your truth won't be the truth others believe.. They don't  tell you that the truth has been painted and it won't always matter.. You'll fight.. you'll cry.. you'll be restless.. you'll be hungry but have no appetite.. you'll want to die... nobody prepares you for that because the don't know. Its easy for somebody who's never actually had to experience first hand what rape is to tell you what to do.. its so easy that they will make posters about it.. they'll give training on how to respond... but in the moment.. when you tell the truth nobody wants to listen because its hard for people to realize that its not strangers raping strangers. its friends raping “friends”. its uncles and aunts raping nieces and nephews... its parents raping their children... grandparents.. cousins... its the people you know and nobody wants to believe somebody would be capable of something like that until it happens to them..

For us, this is personal, and traumatizing. From the moment we were raped or assaulted, the question of who protects us has haunted us all. Collectively, we represent thousands of instances of institutional failure at colleges, universities, and K-12 schools. We suffered immensely, as did our academics, relationships, and overall well-being. Institutional betrayal forced many of us, and countless others, to leave school.

Because victims shouldn’t need to google “What counts as sexual assault” To validate their internal anguish. Because convincing ourselves over and over “It wasn’t my fault” Should never be our responsibility. Because it’s simpler to bottle up the experience – Wish it away – Than to confront the abuser. Because speaking up is dangerous. Because the legal road is riddled with Misplaced blame. Because he’ll keep getting away with it. Because more women may become paralyzed by him. Because we did NOT deserve it. Because we didn’t ask to relive old trauma. Because he shouldn’t be allowed to resurrect demons That took years to defeat. Because he’s someone’s new monster. Because there are thousands just like him, And even more lying frozen in fear Just like us. Because we deserve better. Our daughters deserve better. Our sisters, our mothers, our friends, Deserve tranquility. Teach your sons respect, Because his victims shouldn’t need to do it for you. Educate him; We shouldn’t have to. He shouldn’t have. We shouldn’t have to.

The next person to see me naked will see me writhe in pain when he touches the places you left your mark on my body. He will graze his fingers across the bruises left by your lips across my chest and stomach. Tears will well up in my eyes when he kisses the scars left by your skin on mine- they are reopened. When his hands grasp my waist, I will die one thousand times over: the number of times I died with you. Whispers in my ear made of sweet nothings will taste bitter because it’ll be your voice, not his. I am trapped in a coffin of your flesh, Bare and vulnerable. You ruined me.
