What I think is one of the most subtle yet heartbreaking part of the film is that drop dead fred is clearly based off of lizzies father. When lizzies father leaves, that's when drop dead fred is sealed away in his box. The way lizzie talks about fred disappearing that day, you would think she's talking about her own father abandoning her. But lizzie was 5 when her father left, and it's understandable she doesn't talk about him much because she maybe doesn't remember him. But everything, from lizzie being afraid of being alone to her allowing abusive people to step all over her, is her abandonment issues. When her father left, lizzie lost the part of her that believed she deserved to be loved and only got it back when fred came back.

He has custody of his daughter for a reason
i think i watched "Drop Dead Fred" when I was about 8-9yo and it's definitely not a children's movie, but at the time, i did think it was quite funny (i assumed Fred's "cobwebs" comment was about the womens' nylons, and they ARE wearing tights, but it might be about pubes)
so it's on Tubi and i'm watching it and... it is a LOT more depressing as an adult :\
(also: the fact that these Imaginary Friends seem to show up for kids with distant and emotionally abusive parents... accidentally implies that Natalie, Mickey Bunce's daughter, is being abused by her mother, since Fred becomes her best friend by the end. Did they mean to do that, or...?)

Having seen many movies with a similar premise, I was expecting Drop Dead Fred to be about Fred coming to life, maturing with the help of Lizzie, and then falling in love with her. I was NOT expecting this heartbreaking story about a broken woman who learns to stand up for herself and becoming comfortable with independence. I’m crying.

reasons to write fanfiction (I'll start):
share a cool scene that popped into your head
evoke a particular emotion the canon makes you feel
song made you think of a character or idea from canon
make people feel the same way about a character you do
make dolls kiss for fun
explore ideas the canon hints at but doesn't do anything with
traumatize characters and make them suffer
coddle characters and let them rest
had an insane idea for a crack ship and now everyone needs to know
the author of the canon was wrong and must be fixed
use familiar characters to explore your own ideas and plotlines
canon is too short and you need to wallow in the universe of the story

You became the most important person in my life, and that should never have happened. I imagine walking in the forest your name on the tip of my tongue before I can picture anyone else. But it’s just a dream. It’s nothing else. Just movement behind closed eyes.
