context: the timeline happened three days since Maya's permanence at the Sakamaki household and before they found out her name

Cherries.

Those little round fruits in scarlet color with stems people knot in perverted ways. They have a bittersweet sour taste that matches with heavy creams, cakes, and chocolates. Most of all, they look like droplets of blood when soaked in water.

It's not like Kanato wasn't fond of cherries. On the contrary, cherries are one of his favorite fruit in desserts. He just doesn't see them as a sinful fruit like people do when they use the term in the context of sexuality. He thinks apples are the wicked ones that taste like sin and human blood mixed with madness.

But lately, Kanato was fond of cherries, and it has something to do with his little vampire doll of a wife.

If someone were to ask him what thing comes to mind when he hears the phrase 'love at first sight,' it would be cherries. And they immediately think it's because of the innocence and taste of a delicious first kiss or taking a woman's first time. However, that wasn't the case. Maya reminded him of cherries—beautiful little red balls, so innocent and tempting. And when he crushed them into his hands, broken into a juicy pulp, they turned his hands blood-like, and it was a beautiful sight, just like the full red moon.

He remembered everything as if it was yesterday. It was during a rainy night, and it was the third day of Maya's permanence in the mansion. He had nightmares of the past where he sang over and over again as his mother taught Laito a fake kind of love while Ayato was drowning in depths of despair. When he woke up, he had this sudden urge to burn everything in sight but restrained himself, or he'll set the whole mansion on fire. So he opted to go to the kitchen, grab some snacks to ease his sour mood, and sleep afterward.

As he walked his way toward the kitchen, he smelled something sweet in the air. It was the scent of a baked pastry and something similar to vanilla and sour cherries. He twisted the knob and opened the door. The next thing that greeted him was Maya in her long-sleeved floral patterned night dress, her back to him as she took out something from the oven. She held out her masterpiece, took a whiff of the warm smell, and smiled softly.

Now that was rare. Maya (or Doll like how he usually calls her before he knew her real name) never smiles. She was a doll, and dolls don't cry in pain or twitch when their owner scolds them or smiles at the rare sight of a baked pastry. Maya was just supposed to be a doll—lifeless and void of any pleasures in this world.

But at that moment, she felt alive to him, like a doll that moves whenever he pulls on its strings.

How infuriating... and fascinating.

She put the baked dish on the kitchen counter and finally met his gaze. He thought she would be caught off guard, but she just donned her usual blank expression and bowed in his presence. After that, she wrote, "Is there something I can do for you, Kanato-san?"

Kanato was only silent, sitting by the kitchen counter to scrutinize what she had made. "What is this filthy mess?" he asked.

"It's a cherry cobbler."

Kanato frowned, observing every detail of the dish. Well, the crust was crisp and baked just how he likes it, but he'll have to see the cherries for himself.

Maya wrote something again on her board and then showed it to him. "You can have them if you like."

Well, it was a precious opportunity he won't pass up. "Please give me a fork, Doll-san."

She handed out the fork, and he purposely brushed his fingers on hers when he took it. Her cheeks reddened at the contact, scolding herself mentally for losing her composure over a trivial physical contact. Kanato chuckled at that.

To think I could elicit this reaction from her.

Once done, he placed some cherry cobbler on his plate and took a bite. And true to what he smelled earlier, it tasted warm and delicious. The bitter-sour taste of the cherry jam coated the buttery pastry, which was sweet enough to lift his dark mood. But he was Kanato, and he won't give her the satisfaction of knowing how delicious this dessert was, so he just ate in silence. While doing so, he felt her red eyes on him, blankly observing him eat.

"Why are you staring? Don't you know it's rude?" he queried, glaring at her, putting down his fork. "You think so too, right, Teddy?"

"I just wanted to know if it's sweet enough to your liking."

He huffed in annoyance, slightly pushing the plate away from him. "As if this pile of rubbish suits my palate. It's not sweet enough. Do something about this."

Maya took out a jar of icing sugar from the cabinetry and a tub from the fridge as if on cue. She dusted icing sugar on his dessert, scooped out vanilla ice cream from the tub, and presented the dish to him again.

"Where did you get the ice cream? Reiji didn't buy one for me this month."

"I made it this morning with the ice cream maker."

He raised a brow at that. "And why would you go through the trouble when you can buy one?"

Her scribbling was taking a slow turn, shakily showing what she had written on her board. "Because you said you wanted to eat ice cream."

He chuckled dryly. "... So I'm pitiful, is that it?"

She shook her head. "I just want to make your ice cream, Kanato-san."

Kanato narrowed his eyes at her before retaking a bite. It's sweeter now. He continued taking big bites of the dessert, even having seconds of the dessert and shoveling the food into his mouth with no care if he made a mess. Well, Kanato can eat cleanly and refined, but Reiji was nowhere in sight, so he might as well behave like the brat he is.

He didn't say he enjoyed the dessert or praised her for her skills, but she was wearing that soft smile, and it was all for him.

Everything... all for him.

"Hey, I want to know something."

She gave him a confused look.

"Do you always smile like that? Even around my brothers?"

Maya thought for a moment about what he meant by those words. When she couldn't come up with an answer, he only sighed in disappointment.

"Nevermind. As I thought, you really are a foolish mortal."

Foolish, yet amusing.

In the end, he ate all the cherry clobber and left none for her. Maya tended to clean the mess Kanato made, watching him walk out of the kitchen. But before he could do so, he stopped, looked over his shoulder, and spoke.

"Hey, Doll-san."

She turned to him.

"Why did you make a cherry clobber at this late hour?"

She wiped her hands dry on her apron and wrote on her board. "I was craving something sweet."

"But cherries aren't sweet," Kanato countered.

And when she looked away to hide her bashful face and how her shaking hands gripped her pen and board tight, he smirked in realization.

"You like cherries."

Her face reddened even more, nodding at his statement.

"Well, at least I got to eat your cherries for you."

It took Maya a few minutes before getting a hint of what Kanato meant. She desperately wanted to hide her face behind her board to mask her embarrassment. She wasn't usually like this, but whenever she's left with Kanato, she feels every reason thrown out the window. He would always ask obscure questions and expect her to be patient as she answered them with all her might.

Most of all, he sees right through her. Every little detail of her—the way she chips off her nails or how she sometimes cuts a few strands of her hair—is noticed by him. Maya likes to think it's because of his vampire senses.

Or maybe it's because he had her ever since he killed the hunter.

"Doll-san."

She snapped from her thoughts.

He still wore that damn smirk like the sneaky devil he is. "Do my brothers know? About your cherry obsession, I mean."

She shook her head furiously. Ever since becoming a doll, Maya never tells anyone what she likes or her inner thoughts. Her preferences will never matter to her master; well, that is, if she has one.

"That's great."

She tilted her head in confusion, watching him walk to the back of the kitchen. When he returned, he laid a piece of heart-shaped cherry lollipop on the counter.

"Your cherry clobber is not the sweetest thing I have tasted," he revealed, watching her frown slightly. Then he added, "but the fact that I'm the only one who knows your secret is certainly surprising. You should do that more often."

Maya nodded, pleased that she made him happy.

"Next time, you can make me eat your cherry pie," he remarked, and seeing how she didn't pick up on that, he sneakily said, "that is if you know what I mean."

Now, her whole face was colored in red, and Kanato wished he could paint it on a frame so he would be reminded of how she embarrasses herself in front of him.

After that, he left the kitchen and went upstairs to his room. Once inside, he sat by the window and stared at the pouring, unwrapping his heart-shaped cherry lollipop and sucking on it. Kanato looked down at Teddy on his lap.

"Oh? You also like her, Teddy?" Kanato giggled at that, biting one side of the lollipop and cracking it into pieces. "I've taken quite a liking, as well. She's interesting, that Doll-san. If we kill her one day, we don't have to sew her mouth shut because she won't scream that much. Isn't that right, Teddy?"

He continued licking his lollipop in delight.

"Doll-san is not a bride, but soon, I'll make her mine."

After all, he found her in that forest, and he knew then that she would someday be his from the beginning. On the other hand, Teddy raised his hands, communicating something absurd that made Kanato laugh.

"Didn't I tell you before, Teddy, that there's no need to worry? Doll-san will never run away because she will make her way towards us in the end."

And when he finished his lollipop, he sighed in frustration.

"Until then, her cherries will do... for now, at least."

maya's "first" winter (feat. gilbert, karlheinz, and devyn)

writing this post made me think "oh damn I haven't written anything abt maya's childhood with gilbert" so yeah here's a cute child maya plot

-maya can still remember her winter days back when she was still the same old mariya hisae—the first fall of snow, her giggles with her siblings, the hot cups of cocoa, the cat snowmen they built in the backyard, the berries they picked from the holly trees

-but now that she has been taken by karlheinz from the brothel and adopted by gilbert to become the first vampire doll, she decided she has to move forward in life and put an end to her old days as mariya hisae

-besides her family name has been heavily associated with winter (hisae is spelled with the characters of holly tree, sand, and blessings; holly trees are widespread during winter in Japan)

-and so maya told gilbert she wanted to build a snowman at the backyard of his japanese mansion, which was odd and surprising since maya doesn't request a lot from him

-while maya was busy doing her last snowman (she promised herself this would be the last to pay "homage" to her old self and sweet memory with her siblings), gilbert was pranking devyn (@secretarykang) and karlheinz with a mistletoe and urging them to kiss in front of the camera

-ofc karl chased gil, threatening to strangle the sht out of him when he stepped back and knocked over maya's snowman much to her disappoint

-the three adults were quite nervous on how maya would react since the human doll is not the type to show emotions so gil instantly kneeled in front of her and apologized; devyn even tried to soothe her by saying they can build another snowman again

-the thing is maya took the destroyed snowman as something like "it's futile to say goodbye, after all" so she opted to just be fine and went inside to warm up along with them

-so while gil was busy preparing the roasted chicken and their other meals, devyn gave her a hot cup of cocoa and was abt to put in some marshmallow fluff when karl called her name and said "the little girl is crying"

-gilbert automatically abandoned his kitchen duties and tried everything to comfort maya, who was quietly sniffing as devyn hugged her to her chest while karl was just mocking him and even muttered "you deserve that"

-so in the end, they went out again, and this time gilbert built the snowman alongside karl, who was forced to do so since the poor child was crying (gil even threatened him like, "I know you're the vampire king, but it's only a matter of time before I can dethrone you so screw your ass and help me build that snowman!")

-yes, devyn had to cover maya's ears bcos gilbert and karl kept cursing at each other while building the said snowman

-nonetheless, maya got her closure and since then, winter has never brought her sad memories of the days she lost before the tragedy from the brothel

maya sakamaki fashion headcanons

So here's the thing, I thought this headcanon thing is talking abt Maya's freaking closet (turns out I am wrong 😭). But I still wanna add the wardrobe thingy 'cause I just don't want my writing to go to waste.

As I've mentioned in Maya's random facts post, her main outfits are her long-sleeved maid outfit and the Ryoutei Academy school uniform. However, during summer, she switches to her short-sleeved maid uniform to cater to the season

The reason behind this is that, her other outfits are solely dependent on who her master is.

So yeah, during her time at the Feinze mansion, she was always wearing kimono/yukata and pairs them with dark boots. She also ensures it has a blade underneath so ppl who decide to mess with her won't stand a chance.

But now that she's a Sakamaki doll, Maya has more freedom to express her personality with her clothing.

In fact, she actually likes her clothes now better than the kimono lolita dresses bcos it makes her look more like a teenager instead of a priestess child at a temple

She actually leans on modern pastel grunge + soft girl + dark academia aesthetic outfits with a spring/winter-cool color range to match her pale skin, red eyes, and long dark hair.

So yeah, it's no secret that all her clothes are given by Kanato. In fact, some of them were handmade by him (especially the dresses) and Kanato even takes his time to style her before going out.

And since they were all handmade or given by him, you would notice attention to detail factors like ruffles, ribbons, etc.

Kanato actually has a hard time styling Maya because she has a soft classic body style and slightly large breasts. This forces Kanato to make dresses of larger sizes and accommodate her bust.

And yes, Kanato knows if Maya doesn't like the outfit he makes her wear by observing her for a good minute and if she doesn't stand in front of the mirror for too long, that's when he knows

He'll just make up an excuse that her frowning face made the dress ugly so he would think he styles her really well this sore loser

And yes, Maya never wears a pencil or body-hugging skirts. Not because Kanato doesn't like her emphasizing her womanly assets, but because it will be hard for her to fight in them

In the fake human AU series, Maya's wardrobe definitely got a drastic change. Since she was hired by Shuu to work as his secretary, Maya donned office-friendly outfits to match her work position and make her look more like an adult.

Kanato even commented Maya looked like a different person in the secretary get-up

Most of them are dresses or outfits with skirts. Square pants are a big no since it only makes her look smaller, so she opted for skinny dress pants or jeans.

When it comes to shoes, most of Maya's shoes are Mary Jane's, platforms, black boots, sneakers, doll shoes, and sandals. (all of them have blades hidden underneath)

And she loves wearing socks and stockings; it's like she loves covering her legs most of the time hence why she still uses black stockings despite her maid outfit

Kanato always gives her socks with cute patterns to give her edgy outfits a soft hint

Fun fact: Maya has never worn heels (as per the fake human series fic) because Karlheinz and Gilbert Feinze thought she has no need for them. Plus you can't insert a blade in heels.

That's why most of Maya's shoes don't have heels in them. And if they do, they're still a bit flat with mininalist design, just like this:

So yeah, she had to practice walking in heels thanks to Shuu and Kanato's meddling since she was disguised in the fake human AU series as Shuu's secretary.

Maya is actually not big on accessories.

After all, she's a maid and she can end up ruining them while doing household chores, especially laundry

However, being Kanato's exclusive doll wife has made her wear them since Kanato believes that her outfit is incomplete without them.

But she's still on the minimalist side of things, like a good pair with earrings will do and a necklace or choker. Sometimes she'll add a bracelet.

And yes, she never forgets her wedding ring.

Should a situation arise where she has to remove her ring for protection (cooking, laundry, washing hands), she turns the ring into a pendant on her necklace.

Maya is also a fan of cute beaded necklaces and bracelets. Kanato even made her so many of them so she can pair them all with her outfits

Other accessories she dons are the ones for her hair. Maya is fascinated by cute hair clips and ties and she thinks putting them on her elevates her look. Of course, aside from anything with cherry designs, she likes those ones with cute animals and girly patterns.

Admin's note: I'm not a big Kanato fan so I wasn't too excited about this CD. With all due respect to all Kanato fans, I never expected much character development from this guy. I mean, you can't expect much from a boy who screams and shouts all the time. But I congratulate you. Despite being creepy, Kanato appeared really well at the end of this CD, and at least he can express his true feelings, which should be appreciated. Because there is this Kanato in every sort. Right?

What could be more beautiful with Kanato than a tea party with dolls? To be one of the dolls.

I think this can be expected from Kanato. I mean, Kanato has turned a lot of brides of previous victims into dolls and he's happy with that, but playing and drinking tea with Yui's corpse is different for him.

Why doesn't Yui show him any reaction? Why doesn't he smile or say thank you? The answer is very simple, a doll or a dead body cannot smile and say thanks.

This is something that bothers Kanato. Why is Kanato upset about this? Wasn't Yui's blood the only important thing for him? So what does it matter if Yui dies and doesn't smile at him?

I like to think of these flashbacks as a Yui-less life experience for the boys. We can clearly see how Yui's absence bothers them.

The flashback ends and Kanato and Yui's daily life begins with Kanato's bad mood. Are you surprised?

For Kanato, Yui's ruling is an asset. The property that belongs to him completely and no one should touch her. So if Kanato sees Yui with one of his brothers, even if nothing special happened between them and it was just a simple conversation, it means the end of the world.

This small issue makes Kanato angry and I must warn that this boy's anger is playing with fire. He can simply express his anger in the most brutal way possible and I really wonder how Yui handles this. You have to be very smart and brave to deal with a nervous Kanato because there is a 90% chance of death.

It's not really surprising that Kanato punishes Yui after seeing her talking to Reiji. The first thing that comes to his mind is that Reiji has sucked her blood.

Therefore, it is natural that if Yui says that she is feeling sick, Kanato will think that it is due to anemia and think that Reiji has sucked her blood. He likes to make Yui look guilty all the time. Or rather, Kanato cannot believe Yui's innocence. Maybe he doesn't trust her, and this is understandable for him and all his brothers. Their past has made them see all women as the same and cannot trust them. Even if Yui screams that she is innocent, Kanato doesn't want to believe her. Maybe even Kanato himself knows that Yui is innocent but he is afraid of making her look innocent. In my opinion he is not a simple character and it is impossible to understand what is going on in his mind. While he can act like a spoiled child, he can also be extremely clever and cunning.

Somehow I'm sure Kanato knows Yui is innocent, that's why he forgave Yui with just a simple apology. Well, if you want my opinion, I would say that if Kanato is sure that Yui is doing something against his will, he will punish her severely. This is Kanato's way of mastering Yui. Kanato just wants Yui's attention and he used this issue as an excuse so that Yui would pay more attention to him to make up for a sin she did not commit.

Something Kanato had never seen from his mother was motherly love. That is why he asks Yui for this love. He asks Yui to hug him and pat his head like a mother and bake him sweets. This is exactly what Kanato wished to experience with Cordelia. But he could not, for this reason, he returns his harshness and mistrust to Yui and asks for her love.

So we understand that all this is an excuse for Kanato to experience with Yui what he wished to experience as a child.

Poor Yui. She certainly tried her best to please Kanato, but surely she cannot please him all the time with the bad situation she is in. Yui is so strong that despite her illness, she decided to make sweets for Kanato.

But in the end, illness is something that, unlike Kanato's anger, Yui cannot overcome, and in the end it kills het. But does Kanato understand this? Of course not. It's as if Kanato didn't care what happened to Yui, he just wants whatever he wants to be prepared as soon as possible and doesn't care about Yui's bad condition at all.

Kanato doesn't want to believe Yui's illness and wants to blame her anyway even for getting sick. For this reason, he again relates her illness to anemia and sucking her blood to others.

But how will Kanato react when he finds out that Yui will die soon? Like the rest of his brother, Kanato is not mature enough to look for a solution and tries to just deny it. Well, we can analyze this as Kanato is afraid of Yui's death and doesn't want to believe it. It's a simple solution to deal with something that you're terribly afraid of.

Kanato has realized that he needs Yui and he can't live without her, but he doesn't want to accept this, so instead of showing how much he needs Yui, he tries to pull Yui to a path where Yui admits that she needs Kanato. This is what Kanato fears. He is afraid of being dependent on another person. That's why he doesn't even allow Yui to talk about death. Because it is easy to understand that this is a truth about Yui. Even if the disease doesn't kill Yui, she will die one day because she is human and not immortal like vampires.

So when Yui says she's going to die soon, Kanato yells that Yui has no right to talk about that.

But will Kanato find a solution to cure Yui? Of course not. Kanato goes on a new hunt to prove to both Yui and himself that Yui is not special to him. Neither she nor her blood therefore seeks someone whose blood is as sweet as Yui's and Kanato makes sure that he is not even dependent on Yui's sweet blood.

It is clear that Kanato has accepted the truth without realizing it and is now trying to deny it. Kanato is not honest with himself.

As Kanato himself admitted, he closed his eyes and ears to the truth and imprisoned him so that Yui would surrender and deny the truth.

Kanato asks himself why did I do this? Why didn't I try to do something despite the abnormal condition of her heart? Because even he did not want to accept the truth.

Kanato also asks Yui to lie. He asks her to say that she is not going to die. Kanato simply asks her to pay attention to no one and nothing but him. He wants Yui to tell him that she is by her side forever, even though he knows it's a lie.

Yui could never have imagined that Kanato's love for her is so great, and honestly, I give her the right. Because if someone keeps telling me that your value is only in your blood and not more, I will come to the conclusion that my only value is for my partner is only blood, not myself.

That's why Yui said that Kanato can easily replace her. Yui has no idea how much Kanato hates the idea. She simply wants Kanato to be happy and not worry about losing her prized prey.

It bothers Kanato why Yui thinks Kanato wants to replace her. Kanato is mostly annoyed by the fact that he thinks Yui doesn't need him at all. He wants Yui to be in need and love him and even jealous of the thought that she is going to be replaced. Kanato doesn't want to show Yui that he is the one who needs Yui. That's why he decides to stay away from Yui for a while so that Yui pleads to him that she needs him even if it means that he himself will suffer from this separation.

Kanato's restlessness after leaving Yui is completely understandable. He left her without his heart's desire and just to deny his need for Yui, but he can't bear to be away from her.

Yui only cares about his partner's happiness. That's why she's not afraid of her own death and her only concern is Kanato's happiness, that's why Yui smiles instead of being jealous when Kanato tells her there are many alternatives for you. Yui's heart seems to have calmed down and she is relieved that her loved one is happy. Because this is the only thing that matters to her.

But that doesn't make Kanato happy. He can now clearly see that Yui doesn't need him at all, but that he is dependent on her, and he can't bear to live without Yui.

This might be the hardest thing Kanato has to do, but this distance doesn't make Yui turn to him or admit she needs him, it only makes Kanato more mad. Because as he said, Yui is the only thing he has. Yui is the only burden left in this world for him.

The tea party was for Kanato to finally confess to Yui. He admits that he needs her and doesn't want to live without her, but it was too late because Yui had decided to end her life with poison.

It is understandable why Yui decided to commit suicide. It means Yui was alive with love for Kanato. But she only wanted Kanato's happiness and when she was sure about this, she must have come to the conclusion that she has no more duties and responsibilities in this world and it is better to end her life as soon as possible.

But this was not what Kanato wanted. Kanato wanted Yui to admit that she loved Kanato as much as Kanato loved her. There are thousands of people like Yui, but none of them are Yui. Kanato can't imagine a world without Yui and that's what he finally admits.

Cordelia's heart brought Yui back to life and now it took her life. Many people say that Cordelia's heart kept Yui alive but let's be honest. If Yui's special personality and kind and golden heart, none of these boys, especially Kanato, would have ever admitted that I can't bear the world without you. Preys can be replaced, but not Yui. Because Yui is not prey for them. She is their love and life.

We can see why Kanato never turned Yui into a doll. Yui was a sacrificial bride and the prey was worthless to them just like the previous sacrificial brides. None of the previously sacrificed brides were important to Kanato, so Kanato turned them into dolls.

But why didn't Kanato do this to Yui? Yui was also a sacrificial bride and a worthless prey. Why didn't Kanato do that?

You can clearly see it in this section. Kanato is playing with Yui's motionless corpse just like a doll. But this doll does not smile at him. She does not speak his name and cannot make him happy with the warmth of her love and caress him in her warm arms.

Yui always smiled at him no matter how hard she was but this doll couldn't smile and make Kanato happy. The only one who could do that was Yui.

This is the karma that Kanato received. The girl who always begged him and he never listened and now it's Yui who doesn't listen to him.

Kanato apologizes to Yui because now he can understand how much she's been in pain, although it's too late and I doubt Yui can forgive him, but he hopes for Yui's kind heart.

Yui's return to life is a miracle for Kanato. He no longer wants to lose the reason for his life.

I'm glad to see a mature behavior from Kanato at the end. This brat boy has really improved and I am very proud of him. I'm sure Yui is a very special person who was able to change even Kanato.

And finally we hear Kanato's confession that Yui and her life are precious to Kanato and Kanato doesn't want to lose Yui.

Yui used to be a prey for him, but now this prey has become his most valuable possession. Kanato and she both lived in the same world, a world that Kanato used to see as ordinary, but thanks to Yui, he now sees it as beautiful. Because Yui is with him and as long as Yui is with him, his life and the world he lives in are beautiful.
