And since we're on the subject, I might as well mention how heartbreaking it was to see in the last episode during the whole gun incident, how River snaps back to reality and finds herself surrounded with a loaded gun in her hand and no idea how it got there in the first place
and she looks to Kaylee for comfort, actually calls out for her not Simon, and all she sees is fear
and it really sucks, because she and Kaylee had actually bonded and become friends.. and aside from Simon, she was the first person in the crew with whom she had started to feel normal, goofing off and playing around as young girls do
but in that moment, Kaylee sees her as a stranger, sees River herself as a loaded gun waiting to go off at any moment, and I think it makes River feel more alone than ever before.
I really need to commend Joss Whedon and everyone involved in the making of this episode, because the way they managed to portray how isolating it can be to live with a mental illness is nothing short of incredible, imo. They made use of filmmaking techniques to make us experience how jarring, confusing, frightening and ultimately devastating it can be to not have control over your mind, and how misunderstood a person suffering from these episodes can feel.

The thing that makes Firefly/Serenity so great is how insanely well written the character dynamics are. Every crew member has a totally different and unique relationship with all the other characters and it makes it so interesting to watch these interactions take place. I would happily sit and watch 'The Domestic Life of the Crew of Serenity' or 'A Day In The Life of the Crew of Serenity' like I would love that. I just think Firefly is a masterpiece and I am never going to shut up about it.

Anyone notice how in the last episode when River dissasociates and picks up a loaded gun without meaning to
Kaylee and Simon are frantically trying to get her to drop it and questioning her about where she got it from
Inara is trying to get them to calm down so River can calm down
And Malcolm is running down the stairs towards River, and he says "River, sweetheart, you want nothing to do with that. Put it down."
He calls her "sweetheart".
Then when he is finally able to get close enough to snatch the gun away, the first thing he does is reassure her that he's not angry, that he just wants her to let go of the gun.
If this is not the epitome of Malcolm Reynolds, certified Space Dad™ behaviour, I don't know what is.

I mourn what could've been Mal's relationship with Simon and River in later seasons tbh. You could see that they were really taking their time to flesh out and build that mentor/paternal relationship between him and the youngest crew members throughout season 1. They never rushed it. Which is something I feel that a lot of shows struggle with nowadays. The pacing was perfect. You could see Mal go from reluctant saviour of the two strays, to actually seeing them both as part of the family crew by the end of season 1. You can see him become more fatherly towards River (like when he takes the gun away from her saying "Honey, you want nothing to do with that" or the last episode when he gently tells her that there is a place for her on the ship and takes her back). This makes sense, as River already expressed that she viewed Mal as a sort of father figure (not so subtly, in the witch episode, she says that "Dad" was going to save her and Simon).
Simon on the other hand, having taken over the caretaker role for River, is not as emotionally open and can challenge authority if he feels something endangers River, which I think directly clashes with Mal because the latter obviously needs to maintain order on the ship for the good of the entire crew. Not only that, but I think Simon did not deal with the pain of being essentially abandoned to his fate by his own father, which he might be unwittingly projecting to his next authority figure, Mal.
I think the series was building up to a big moment between Mal and Simon, where perhaps Mal finally broke down those barriers that Simon set up and showed him that, unlike his father, he would never abandon him or River to their fate, that he would always be there for them. That Simon is not just there because he's useful as a doctor for the crew but because they all want him there, because Mal wants him there. And perhaps this would allow Simon to finally allow himself to be more of a kid, and let someone look after him for a change and accept Mal as his new father figure, as someone he can trust and depend on.

Thank you to @toongrrl-blog and American Girl Doll Games Wiki for the links to the game!
The only game you cannot play on archive.org is The Purloined Jewel. To play that game, you can open the link to the swf file on the official American Girl website (see below). Note that you can only play The Purloined Jewel on browsers that support swf files like Internet Explorer.
Also, there are 5 links to the final game (i.e. The Ruby’s Final Resting Place) which use the codes as the links. However, archive.org only archived three versions of the final game. If anyone enters a code but it redirects to an error saying the page isn’t archived, message us your code! Because it seems that all the links are still in the official website, but we don’t know two of the codes! Thank you!

Honestly, for 15 years I swore this is what he said
“She’s like a rose, that’s forever in bloom” makes so much more sense. Why did I never question myself.
